    Mr. Lloyd has struck gold with this, absolutely lovely car with top spec. Wouldn't take much to get it in perfect condition, it's extremely straight and honest for its age.

    It was a joy watching you talk about the car I absolutely love! Thank you.
    I live in Turkey and bought a very rare 2.3 T5 coupé, instead of the more common 2 litre T5 (03:33). Many of C70's have been converted to run on LPG which renders the value of a classic quite low. Mine is untouched. Thus also taking into account odometer is only 75k miles, I believe I have found an absolute gem. It is my 5th old Volvo but I believe this is the one to stay. Very surprised to hear only about 20 are left in the UK!

    Thank you for allowing me to swap cars yesterday, sir! The rear visibility is terrible (I will get some parking sensors fitted on the number plate surround), the turning circle is rubbish, and I find the suspension on this GT model a bit firm and fidgety (the standard ones are different), but I really like it. It has covered 700 miles in just over two weeks and is run only on 97 octane and above, as recommended for the T5s. Cambelt and service have just been done, and very much looking forward to many more trips over the next few months.

    Currently restoring a 2.0T version of this in Coupė format and just as you mentioned, it is absolutely fantastic (When it works), Mine is in the sought-after Saffron Orange Pearl with the optional BBS 17" Propus wheels which really set it off a treat. Mine is the 2.0T but with the 'M56' Manual because It's actually my first car, the 5-Speed 'M56' makes it such a fun car to both drive around in as well as waft around in and as first cars go, It's honestly incredible! One of the reasons as to why the C70 handles so well is because of its 'Deltalink' rear suspension setup that was taken from 850s. Essentially It's a Semi-Independent Trailing Arm setup that flexes in such a way under load that gives the C70 Passive Rear Wheel Steering. Fun Fact: The reason why the rear seats don't fold down on the coupės is because of a great big metal brace that goes between the rear seats and the boot and because of this, the seats can't unfortunately fold. The Coupė was essentially the test bed for the Cabrio hence the low numbers and short life span. I've had mine for nearly 7.5 years and have been a lover of these since 2014, in fact, I spent a good year looking up everything there was to know about C70s before buying mine on the 6th March 2015 and since then I've loved it more and more each day! Mr Lloyd has definitely got himself a cracking vehicle with his T5. They are getting rarer but they are definitely well on their way to becoming a Classic in their own right. C70s are also sought after in the Volvo Circles so they're a LOT more pampered compared to a similar 'P80' platform car (850/V70/S70). Prices are definitely on the rise on these, I paid £1200 for mine back in 2015 but now I've seen some recently going for well over double that and I can certainly see why!! Overall, a fantastic vehicle that is well-overlooked and definitely underappreciated compared to all Its rivals of the time. Great review as always Matt!

  • @_samohT_

    Great video Matt - a truly underappreciated car. As an owner of a V70 from the same era, I must say that 30mpg is very respectable, expect high teens or low twenties around town. One could quite easily argue there isn't much logic to owning one of these cars in 2022, what with the running costs and increasing rarity, but 5-cylinder Volvos do very much have that special something missing from modern vehicles.
    And the other comments about the turning circle are spot on, it's truly hilarious at times!

      I had a 98 (s reg) V70 XC, the interior was beige too (and very similar, aside from stereo / speakers and beige leather steering wheel).
      Only 193hp (low pressure turbo), AWD and the lovely auto gearbox (so smooth!).
      Unfortunately I never got close to 30mpg ... 22 on a long run, 18 on the short commute I had ...
      Lovely car though, effortless and fast
      Thanks for bringing back happy memories!

    I have two of these cars in my collection, they are truly amazing in both standard and tuned form. The 2.3 T5 engine is so strong without any other modifications you can reliably get 300hp out of one which makes it a true luxury super coupe. One mine has a build block and makes 400hp, I love it to bits so I am happy I found one in good condition and stock so I can use it to daily drive.

    • @it_is_just_a_volvo
      @it_is_just_a_volvo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very true, for a 90s car these cars and engines were real beasts and could outrun M3s in a straight line if it wanted too. People are still stunned because of the powerband my car makes with the 16T hybrid. I have a built engine block but I'm still on a safe tune and small 16t hybrid. I'm curious what I'll be pushing with a 21-22T turbo. I'm staying TD04 because they are super reliable and bolt on. =)

    • @marcostet
      @marcostet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@it_is_just_a_volvo good choice! With a 19t turbo power over 400hp is already possible. With a even bigger turbo like the 21/22t I think over 500 should be easily done. Although I think billet block will be necessary. I have a full forged block but the rods are rated to 500bhp. And with a lack of grip I will keep the 19t for now =)

    A friend of mine has one of these in mid-green metallic. No rust [of course]. Also R registered. He offered it me for a price that was nice but still too rich for me. In the last month he had it fine tooth comb restored for almost a five figure sum in UK pounds! Now it will be worth a bomb, but he loves the car, so will run it as long as he can, which being a Volvo might be another twenty years, unless petrol stops being sold!
    Lovely car. My favourite Volvo, bar the straight six engined 960 wagon, which would be worse on petrol of course.
    Lovely vid! Thanks and best wishes from George [who luckily owned two 2.3 red block 240s. The second one G23ADX manages 40.2 mpg on a tour to Norway that covered nearly two thousand miles. I have a light right foot, and the very restrictive Norwegian speed limits helped of course. It had the very rare Regina Bendix fuel injection set up rather the more common Bosch system].

    Love this channel. This volvo is relevant to me as Back in 2005/6 I was only 19/20 was running an A4 quattro 2.6 cos I couldnt get insured on the 2.4 front drive at the time. It basically broke me financially but I loved it. Only 150bhp. Gave me a taste of the solidity and smoothness of a bigger engined premium brand and coming from a renault 19 then a clio 1.4 rt it felt a few steps up in quality. Prior to that I nearly got a calibra red top for sale near biggin hill but instead went for the audi. My choices at the time were a 156 2.0 twin spark. That was sold on the day near foots cray. The other choice I was looking at was the 406 coupe but age limited me as the v6 was again uninsurable and the 2.0 was a slug. I owned the audi for maybe 14-18 months. It had to go failed an mot with a huge advisory list. Ended up getting a 214 p reg in purple 🙈 ran that for a few months on my dartford to horsham commute funny little thing she was, velour and wood with wind up front windows and nippy too for the time. Heres where the volvo relevance comes in. I desperately wanted one ever since sitting in a metatllic orange one at the deitling hill summer festival in 1998 when I was maybe 13 I also got seperated from my friends parents this afternoon. Thats another story. Plus it was in that reboot of the saint with val kilmer. I wanted one even when I had the audi, I was biding my time for my no claims to build up so I’d afford the insurance. Anyway i fell on hard times with money I just couldnt save. I tried to get credit for another loan and it all fell flat. Ended up getting a 307 1.6 from welcome finance and although it was loaded, smooth(ish) , spacious only 2 and a half years old it just wasnt as special as a big older prestige car would have been. This might all seem random but I got the 307 in Larkfield close to where this guy does all his filming. Fell in love with the volvo in deitling again not far from where this guy does all his filming. 7 mile lane and all that. The first petrol stn i took the 307 to I see all the time in these videos and hes a proper rover man. I never ever imagined owning one of those. Anyway its like a full circle trip down memory lane made better cos its filmed in relevant points in my car history relating to a rare model not many 20 year olds desire. Sorry the end.

    I love the styling on these. Looks especially good in the copper metallic... as seen in “The Saint” remake in the late 90’s. I haven’t seen one on the road in years. I did recently enjoy the 5 cyl. Thrumb in an S60 2.5 T AWD. That I drove for a few weeks getting it ready for sale for a family member. Delicious waves of torque and a very unique sound.

    Nice review. I have a 20 year old T5 GT Auto cabrio with 83k on the clock. Bought it last year. Loved these when they were unveiled, but never practical for me then. No justification in owning it now, but it's fun! A bit choppy on back roads, but set it up on a motorway, and it will give between 45 and 50 mpg on cruise at 60. Never intend to sell it. Great review thank you! This is a perfect modern classic daily. I used to work for a group that had Volvo & SAAB dealerships and unfortunately these just didn't sell as too expensive. We had a Saffron yellow T5 demo we limped out of. Convertibles sold better but still in the ratio of about 1 to 50 SAAB 9-3 Convertibles if less! The E46 BMW and Mercedes CLK coupes didn't help the C70. I'd love one though!

    I bought one of these for peanuts a few years ago for a bit of fun, and I ended up keeping it because it was so good. An underrated car that sadly got tarred with the negative brush from the convertible version. The coupe is a completely different drive.

    I was the original owner of R98 PMO. First registered in April 1998. Not a C70 but rather an S40 T4. In Forest Green with full beige leather interior. Optioned the winter pack and rear booster seats (the squabs ratcheted up so we didn't need booster cushions for our kids).
    I lied to my wife and said I ordered a boring old Mercedes C200 something. She was mortified when this was delivered to our home in Luton because it was a Volvo.
    When Lex Volvo of Reading said it was being driven up I was concerned. First to turn up was a Volvo T5 estate that roared into our cul de sac, driven by a 65+ year old man. I was panicking as I thought my new car would be getting a good thrashing on the 60 odd mile journey up from Berkshire. Well the T5 driver (the taxi home) had 2 cups of tea and a plate of biscuits before my T4 sedately arrived some 35 minutes later driven by yet another 65+ old delivery driver. By the time we had gone over the vehicle checks and paperwork, they both stayed for lunch.
    Epically comfortable car. Epically fast too. Brilliant for traffic light Grand Prix against BMWs or Porsches or Jags. I shouldn't say this but topped out twice on the A1 between M25 and Sterling Corner at 146mph. Once with me at the wheel and the other time with my good friend LC driving. And 4x on the old M10 (emptied the tank). NOT CONDONING IT. UTTERLY RECKLESS. STUPIDLY DANGEROUS. AND SHOULD'VE/ COULD'VE BEEN BANNED. DESERVEDLY SO. BUT NEVER CAUGHT.
    Just a brilliant car!

    Jeah i love volvos 5 cyl engines and they are pretty simple to work on to. I have 740 red block turbo as well , but those 5 cyl petrol engines are still my favorite - they sound so nice, even the weakest 5 cyl 2.4 10valve engine sounds nice when its been pushed hard. Great review. But you should check out more about sips system its a neat idea. Its not just a bigger side skirts there are even car seats involved, there are pretty strong metal tubes in seats and between those tubes, inside arm rest there is a big metal chunk so if side impact situation happens they all work together and in a mean time side air bags are triggered.

The massive boot really does make it the archetypal GT, or GRAND TOURER! Beats up the JAGUAR (what's it called - the XJS?) The boot IS big on that, but it doesn't look like there's enough room in the back - in such a big car! (Having said that, I've never seen this color, and it is Stunning!) Even with the torque steer (I did experience an S70 T5), it's still very underrated. Superb video ! Imho one of the best designed Coupe's of the nineties.. Saw one first in the Val Kilmer movie "The Saint" and was in love. It has robust yet elegant lines. When I was on a business trip in Oslo in 2000 I hired one for a week. I was in heaven, and changed my name for 7 days in Simon Templar 😇

    I have an '98 C70 T5. I just love it, and it's manual. I use it recreational on track and for roadtripping. Made the right adjustments to make it more fun and reliable in handling because at high speeds things can get sketchy eventhough they handle quite well. But these cars are stock pretty powerful and can become unpredictable sometimes, especially with 20 year old worn components.
    Mine has a rare OEM 320mm BBK (police car upgrade), coilovers, sway bars, Recaro sport touring seats and good sport tires. It's a blast to drive! Also great power since I mounted a hybrid turbo. It goes like an absolute rocket. They sure have their flaws but are great, eventhough they become very rare.
    But in the essence this car was everything you and I look for. Great sound system (Dolby), Airco, cruise control and the power and sound of a 5-cilinder. ❤️❤️❤️

      @@it_is_just_a_volvo , done around 850 miles since I picked mine up on 2nd November. It will soon be appearing on my channel as well as two others. It's definitely capable of intensive use, but I am running it on 97 octane fuel minimum (as recommended for the T5s) and getting around 30 mpg, so it is not the most economical car, but I do like it.

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting 30 is quite good tbh. Mine was 20mpg with my Rica chip and catback. Made around 270BHP on the dyno too then. Then went for a 16t hybrid, 3inch downpipe, intercooler, injectors, ...... and so on. Car now makes around 310bhp. And does around 35mpg all round use now. And it's a manual.
