These Santoni Get a Custom Cobblestone Patina: Reworking a previous patina attempt.

  • This light grey Santoni pair had been patinaed and the results were just weren't what the client wanted. (Note I did not do the original patina). The toe had too sharp of a cutoff line and the color didn't blend well with the shoe. It was also heavily unbalanced without any other shading elsewhere. I was able to adjust the color and blend the toe and add darker marbled patina across the shoe to give it a better balance.
    I think I would call this one Mossy Cobblestone.
    If you come up with a clever name for it please comment down below!
    Featured products:
    Pure Polish cleaner conditioner which I absolutely love!
    purepolishproducts.com
    waxes by Saphir which are always excellent.
    Dyes used were Angelus and Saphir
    Brushes I use are e.l.f. makeup brushes. Foundation and eye shadow brushes. I think they work better than the cheap craft store brushes I have tried and are only around $2-3 each.
    Acetone is from the hardware store
    Hope you will enjoy this one...I know I did!

    Love this pair Michael! Your Instagram & youtube videos inspired me to try my own patina on some beaten up 7-year-old oxfords. I mustered up the courage and had a crack today with a handful of Fiebings dyes & acetone.
    They're certainly NOT on the same level as yours (plus I'm waiting on some neutral mirror gloss to finish them off 😂), but they look better than they did before so I'm happy with my newly patinaed mahogany oxfords and new hobby! Keep up the great work 😁👍

    They look great. To save time and guesswork you can read up on color theory and get a color wheel…. purple/violet will tone that down because it’s the complement (opposite) to yellow; Otherwise you’re just covering the old color (rather than ‘cancelling’ it). That brassy yellow wants to keep shining through.

FWIW, i recently dyed my own pair of dress shoes for the first time from cognac to dark brown with saphir teinture francaise. it wasn't easy, and i had to remove the finish a few times with the decapant, but i eventually got a satisfactory result.

    Your method to give this pair of shoes more depth was quite good but I find above the medallion area the left shoe was a bit lighter than the right one. Maybe it's just my tv but having said that overall the transformation was quite good. 👍😎

    • @mbshoedoc
      @mbshoedoc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is possible. Something like this wouldn't bother me especially on a such a mottled patina. I think if it was a flat factory coloration a mismatch would really stand out and be an issue. For me the shoes should match but not be perfectly symmetrical. Now if it was noticeable while wearing them then it could easily be fixed with a bit of darker cream polish on the vamp of the left shoe. As I watched the video again it did appear a bit lighter but I don't have the shoes on hand anymore to really assess them. Keen eye my friend.

    Quick question. Do you think the Carmina polish work as well as the Saphir?
    I really want to know. Thank you.

    • @mbshoedoc
      @mbshoedoc  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly for the finishing wax I like it better than Saphir. I have no idea what it is but it gives a final shine better than anything I have tried. I still like mirrorgloss or Pure polish high shine for building the base. I don't know if Carmina actually produces wax...I doubt it. My guess is it is rebranded wax from some other maker. It smells different than anything I have encountered. It has a slightly sweet smell to it like some carnauba car wax or something.

      Not sure exactly what you're saying here. I tend to start with the more mild options first and when that doesn't work I move on to something more harsh. In this case though the pure polish can actually strip wax better than acetone but it won't strip the dye enough. Pure polish then acetone works well. I don't think I ever said I wasn't going to use acetone. Hope that better explains the thought process.
