Simple grappling hook winch made from ebay parts for roughly $120.
Cost Breakdown:
12v 3000lb car winch: $66 shipped new
$13 grappling hook. Worked, but not meant for climbing. Will weld my own from scratch for V2.

Several movies have some sort of winch device to escape a difficult situation. These do, of course, exist for the military and several other uses, but making one for personal use isn't as easy. No, these are not safe tools. If one cable or rope breaks, you're going to fall. Thus I do not encourage trying this at home. This is just a simple example of what can be done with a few cheap parts and some bravery.
V2 will have improved safety, control, weigh about four times less, be more compact, and have a far longer rope and battery life. Subscribe and drop a like to encourage me to build it, and I'll have the video up as soon as I'm done!
