My 7yo grandson devours sketchbooks so I taught him to make his own. He has them in all sizes and shapes now. If you cut a cereal box lid and glue your art to the cover and glue your first and last page to the inside of the covers it is a little more sturdy. We cover our spine with cloth tape to make it last longer but that's optional with a smaller book but if you sew several leafs together to make the book I'd suggest it.
Great, simple instructions, Lacey! You are a fantastic teacher. I love making my own sketchbooks for art journaling. I sometimes just bind a bunch of signatures like this and make a sturdy permanent cover and then I can swap out the inside like Travelers Notebooks (held in with elastic or dollar tree headbands that are thin like ponytail holders), but whatever size you like. For anyone who finds this interesting the tool is an awl and the stitch is a pamphlet stitch. There are more involved bindings, but this is the easiest. I also like to make hotdog books or accordian books using one sheet of paper with various cuts & folds. These are the names of the folds if anyone wants to research. Plenty of tutorials on various ways to fold paper or bind your own art journals. They make simple and fun gifts/cards when covered in art!
Thank you! This is the first time I think I might actually try this because your demo and explanation was so clear! I’ve learned a lot from you over the past couple of years - thanks again! 🤩
You’re adorable girl! I remember your Iceland book and it was super cute! Love using your found artwork on the covers too 😊 Now we just need to book a trip, hahaha 🤩💜👩🏼🎨
This is so much fun! My own sketchbooks are waiting in line to be painted, been making my own for a couple of years or so. I just found a great bookbinder on youtube. So many ways of binding and I want to try them all😅
These are so cute and handy! If your cover is painted with watercolor, you could also use a cold wax (gamblin or dorlands) over it to give it some protection and strength! :)
The sharp pointy thing is called an awl :) They come in variety of shapes, colours, and sizes. And sharpness. For folding one can use bone folder (super useful thing, just buy the natural bone, not the plastic thing), a back of a spoon, a ruler.
Thank you! I’ve been looking for a sketchbook and I think instead I’ll just make my own with all the watercolor paper I have from card making. Thank you so very much for the tutorial!! 🥰 ps I absolutely love your hair, it’s so fun!!
AHHHHH I love this sm!! One question, it doesn't matter if the paper has texture on one side and smooth behind?? I have cold press paper, but it has texture on one side. Does it hold the same amount of water on the smooth side?

I always get lost with binding but this is so simple even my dyslexic brain didn't get confused. Thank you.🎉
I just love everything you do! You're so creative and inspirational! Thank you! 😊☮❤

Thanks. Sketch books aren’t cheap and I want to try the nano palette with the little book.😊

Awesome idea. I get to go to Berlin and Prague in May, I love the idea of making something custom. Thanks!
Thank you ❤ this is great
I would never have thought of doing this, but I can't wait to try this.

I look for those little watercolor sketchbooks whenever I'm out, and I can never find any. Now I can have a ton of them!!!! 🎉
I was thinking about something like this now I have the confidence to try it 😊

It’s an awl
Pronounced awl.
