    The aged cherry version of that model is almost exactly the same as the Elitist 61 faded SG I used to own. It has correct cutaways and the finish is gorgeous, and the cherry model does not have the cheap looking striped veneer on the guitar. I think that is the best value in an SG guitar, whether from Epi or from Gibson. Unless you can find a real Elitist for sale.

    I'm an old cat, and I agree about the neck. I started playing 50's guitars back in the day, and need a thicker neck. .85 is my personal minimum, .88 - .92ish is better, w/ 1.0 at the 12th. Thick C, or better D for me. I like what they have done though! The last SG Standard I bought was $1300 in 2017, only 6 years ago, now they are ~$1900!! For $1650 I like the S model PRS 594 w/o the maple cap. The DC model is their "SG" type. The SC, with the 'cap' is $1950, and LP type. Both made in USA. I also just bought a set of USA 58/15 LT pups, they claim a 1 time limited offering made in US, same as core 594's get. If I really like the way the 594 SC "S" turns out, I may just buy another set for the SG type, and be done with Gibson. I sold my original LP, and I've been through 5 more trying to replace it. NADA, sold them all. Eppie doesn't quite do it either. Sorry for rant. 8( --gary

    I’m surprised this Epi doesn’t have the circuit board set up, that certainly is nice to go along with the upgraded pickups. I own 3 SG’s currently and they’re all Gibson, a Standard, a P90 Special and also a limited Sam Ash run Standard which came in white as well. My Gibson came with the dreaded circuit board which I gutted and installed an Emerson harness along with a set of very nice PAF style pickups.
    My point is this, by the time I finished upgrading my Gibson I was probably in the low two thousand dollar area, meanwhile this Epi you just reviewed is 899 ahah! I love Gibson guitars even though this is sort of a kick in the nuts here LOL!
    Cool review man 🤙

    • @ZacksRockingLifestyle
      @ZacksRockingLifestyle ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I’ve gathered, the Epiphones without two Epiphone humbuckers don’t have circuit boards. That is especially the case in the ‘61 SG and ‘59 LP, because the Gibson pickups they use are the cheaper ones that can’t ever be coil split, thus Epi can’t use the connectors with them. The connectors are mostly why so many new Epiphones have cool coil tapping and phase switching features (even if the pots are shit). My Adam Jones doesn’t coil split or anything like that, but it’s not wired with connectors because it has a Duncan in the bridge.

    I just bought a lawsuit ers 1970s Tokai LP, with Cheapo Factory pickups. When I plug it in by my actual Gibson Les Paul classic side-by-side? When you put that neck pickup on they both have that same throaty sound and you can barely tell them apart. Everybody says that has nothing to do with the wood or anything like that it's the electronic but I truly believe that with the Les Paul there's something about the build of that guitar that causes it to sound the way it does whether it's a cheaper brand or a real Gibson the build and shape of that style of guitar makes it have that "abrasive","throaty" sound . If you were in my jam room I'll bet you have a hard time telling apart which one I paid 400 bucks for and which one cost me $1,000

    Just got this very guitar in the cherry finish. I love it. But I will tell you that the case doesn't protect as much as you'd think as it arrived with the treble pickup volume and tone knobs destroyed. One completely destroyed and the other still on but the pot metal post poking through the knob. Everything else was fine but this was a little bit of a let down to say the least. But, I can't blame Epiphone or Sweetwater (whom I purchased this guitar from) as the damage was most likely due to a compression of the box/case during shipping. All else works perfectly and I commend Epiphone for this wonderful guitar. I love it!

    • @o.brygier2364
      @o.brygier2364 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The more rounded top horn is probably due to the fact, that Epiphone uses this geometry for the Tony Iommi version, too, which needs more beef here to accommodate the strap pin bolt.

    This particular Epi is a bit of a sleeper IMO.
    Honestly, this is a great value just by itself.
    However, if you’re like me and enjoy making good guitars great, then buff/polish the body to a nice shine because the finish felt a bit cheap to me (the “collab w/Gibson CS is marketing BS) but to each his own…This gives you a nice shiny alpine white while leaving the back of the neck nice and satiny smooth.
    Second, add a Maestro Vibrola whether to use or just for looks that will also eliminate neck dive. Lastly add the roller bridge and you have a player’s dream that comes in under $1,500. That is still way under the Gibson equivalent.
    These have the two-piece bodies and one-piece necks so Epiphone was really flirting w/Gibson on this one.
    As with any Epi, you’ll need to slightly adjust your expectations and have your tools ready but all in all, it’s a phenomenal player.

    I've got 4 SG's 3 Epiphone's and a Gibson Standard Pelham Blue. I have a P-90 Classic and a G-400 Pro in White and Sg Custom in Ebony. I like my Gibson but like you had mentioned the necks are a lot different on certain models. My G-400 Pro has a very slim neck and I like that better than the wider neck on the other ones aside from the classic P-90 even having rather big hands. I love the collaboration between Gibson Custom shop and Epiphone to make the Epiphones closer to their big brother Gibson. I also have 4 LP's all Epiphones because I can't even come close to afford a new Gibson that I want. I got the 59' LP standard Dark Burst with the Gibson and Switchcraft parts I love it almost more than any of the other ones I have. I have a LP custom Pro in Ebony I like but it's not close to the Gibson counter part , it was made in Korea and some say that the Korean ones are better than the Chinese made ones from Quindago China but I beg to differ because the inspired by Gibson line is a LOT nicer than the former ones. I'm not a huge fan of the satin finish I am more of a gloss guy but a little rubbing and it will be gloss, you just have to be sure to not miss any spot's. Already having 4 SG's and a Gibson one I don't think I am going to drop the hammer the slimmer neck is enticing but with money being tight I have to pass. The one thing I like better with the Gibson is the body is thinner than the Epiphones.

    I just bought this same guitar from a pawn shop for $350 plus tax , making it like $379 , and I bought the limited edition Les Paul from the same pawn shop about three months ago for $600 , now I just need three more Epiphone guitars to make my collection complete for me. I want an Explorer and a Flying V that is coming out this year , both are Korina although I think they are gonna be a little more expensive but still not as expensive as a Gibson. The other one is an Ace Frehley Les Paul , but that one’s getting hard to find and too expensive. But who knows , I may find one one of these days.
    👍👍👍✌️✌️✌️

    I couldn't not comment. They may have been Epis best SG. If they would've paid more attention to quality. I returned 2 before giving up and buying something else. BAD QC issues on both. Ended up with a Schecter Van Nuys Strat. Same price, twice the quality. Super disappointed with Epiphone. Just one man's opinion.

    Bought one from Guitar Center. Called to tell them that the fret composite sucks. I'm talking to the guy, and I could tell he didn't care about anything I was saying. No after sale concern, lt was like talking to an empty phone. Stay away from Guitar Center, and if you buy an Epiphone, get ready for a fret job.

      @@mr.astrophysics9115 it’s ok man. Chinese labor is going up just like everything else. I’m good on new Epiphones though. Just rediscovered my 1993 Korean Epiphone LP Standard at mom’s house like 2 weeks ago and I’m happy af. It’s 30 years old. Mom got it for me new around Easter in 1994. The Koreans at the Samick factory were paid pretty well also.

    Here I go again. Sorry folks, but I have to ask, why can't guitars take the punishment they used to? I have this exact guitar, but I know it will need work soon. Beautiful function and sound, but it seems to be like all the others. Flighty fingers work for some, but if you dig in and play hard, guitars don't last anymore. Trust me, I have played them all. The strap breaks, it falls at your feet. Even if you take a chair, will it still play? They're too fragile now. You have to be in control. Grab that neck like you're going to break it.
