    Shojo: something else entirely.

      I always thought homophones were scary enough in English to tell apart but then I look at the Japanese language and my eyes just roll back.

      @@JanitorAntisocial Though, "shojo" and "shoujo" are not homophones but I guess for a speaker of a language which doesn't have phonemic vowel length they might sound almost like homophones.

      A very good skill for both interveiwers and parents. People love explaining things to others, so as a journalist that's how you can get someone to talk more than perhaps they intended. And as a parent or uncle/aunt that's how you can make a kid feel like they're so smart.

      I think that's just cause it's a company made by English speaking people. People tend to ignore when vowels get extended in Japanese and just have it as one vowel. Sayounara being shortened to sayonara and arigatou being shortened to arigato

    • @tbk2010
      @tbk2010 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way I see it "Shoujo" or "Shōjo" are the corrent romanizations of the japanese word "girl", while "Shojo" is an english loanword from japanese specefically for the genre of shoujo manga/anime that happens to overlap/clash with the romanization of the japanese word for virgin.

      Spanish and Japanese have very similar sounds and pronunciations so for Spanish's speakers is usually relatively to get the correct pronunciation.

      I love the old meme "know your anime" chart. It's difficult to illustrate in text, but it boils down to:
      Shounen:
      Targeted Audience: Young boys
      Actual Audience: Adult women
      Shoujo:
      Targeted Audience: Young girls
      Actual Audience: Adult men
      Seinen:

      I don't think every mahou shoujo series is shoujo demographic. Like for example, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica series is not really a shoujo anime it's more like a seinen anime.

      I think after madoka, most magical girl anime is for boys. Only stuff that's for kids like precure is still for girls

      @@grandethar1121 But "classically" they were made for shoujo audience (mostly at least). Madoka is different because it's newer and it's somewhat of a deconstruction of the genre.
