Fun story: my father, who works for the highways division of Hertfordshire County Council, says that there is a dispute between ownership of the old M10. HCC claims that it belongs to National Highways, as it was built as a motorway and an important A-road; National Highways that it belongs to HCC, as it is no longer a motorway and therefore no longer their problem. The reason for the dispute is that some of the infrastructure (a bridge in particular, I can’t remember which one), is no longer to standard and so needs constant maintenance. Not that interesting but I thought it was a fact worth sharing🤷🏻♂️
Awesome. I'm glad you did. It explains (in my head at least) why when I reported the traffic lights not working at junction 8, HCC said its not them, then when I reported it to National Highways Agency via their website they said it is not their responsibility. Fortunately the traffic lights are fixed now. Almost had a collision there because all the lights were out.
As someone who lives less than a mile away from the park street roundabout and see and uses the old M10 almost every day, this video is very good and carry on with the good work mate
A very interesting video of a now forgotten motorway namely the M10. I like the old video footage of the cars etc that were using the then newly constructed & opened M10 back in 1959, so much fewer cars back then & I am sure the vast majority of them will sadly be no longer on our roads anymore. Personally I have never used the M10 before it was downgraded to the A414 but thank you for posting video.
The Park Street roundabout, back in mid 80s was very busy. When M25 finally completed the Park Street roundabout became almost like a ghost junction, very quiet. Gradually got busier again back to it's previous activity or more.
I stood by that roundabout often in the 80's hitching across country. It was real busy sometimes I had to walk to the next roundabout so a car could stop, often in the dark.
@@UK.RoadsCyclingandTransport It was totally illegal but when hitch hiking you do what you can. There was a wide grass verge beside the hard shoulder but I have done both ways in the dark back in the eighties.
@@UK.RoadsCyclingandTransport Not really sensible. I have been dropped off at various points on the motorway network, sometimes chased off by the Police and sometimes getting a lift from the hard shoulder, not sensible but I did get to travel around and meet some interesting people.
Super piece of motorway normally very little traffic, frequently no traffic so ideal to ‘give it some welly’ especially from M1 as it was/is downhill, both own and those from the dealership I worked in, only couple of iffy’s when I left braking for the roundabout bit late. Oh and some of those cars were manual steering and drum brakes e.g. 1954 Humber Super Snipe 4.0 litre max about 96mph owned 1963 (pre 70 limit). Fastest was Jaguar XJS V12 manual (post 70 Limit)
The M10 motorway wasn’t really a long motorway wasn’t it and only went from Park Street roundabout in St. Albans to Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire where it was renumbered to the A414. And there was a small motorway that bypassed Tring known as the A41(M) Tring Bypass before it was downgraded to the A41 but avoids Tring. Before you reach Buckinghamshire. Also not forgetting the M41 in Shepherd’s Bush in West London that went from the A40(M) Westway to Holland Park roundabout that is in Shepherd’s Bush which was renumbered as the A3220 West Cross Route. And the A40(M) Westway was renumbered to as we know of the A40 Westway.
Between the two A1081 carriageways approaching Bell Roundabout from NW, there’s space for a flyover enabling free flowing traffic from M10 to M25. Just maybe not built as part of motorway.
@@UK.RoadsCyclingandTransport I don't recall the M10 well enough to be sure but I think that with a little imagination the driver can pick out the parts of the road that remain the same. There's a lot more street furniture now and a lot more building, retail parks and so on. The average speed is so much less of course.
@@UK.RoadsCyclingandTransport no, tou mention the A6127(M), that was the Newcastle Central Mortoways original road number until it was re-numbered to A167(M)

Fascinating, I'm glad you did share that 😀

I used the M10 quite a lot back in the day, then shortly after it changed to the A414 I moved away. Thanks for the video. Brought back some memories.
Understandable, I'd move away too if they downgraded a nearby motorway. Shocking stuff.

Great video, very interesting and informative-I've been enjoying these documentary style videos.
Ne to i love these to. ☺️
An enjoyable video, well put together and informative. I learnt something new!

I have walked the M10 while hitch hiking a few times, remember it's passing but not many others have. Cheers
Isn't it prohibited to walk along that stretch of carriageway?

Fair play

The maps suggesting the M10 joining the M25 are based on the old London Ringway 4. Jay Foreman posted an excellent video on that.
Sounds like the same voice on those old 1970s British public information films.
I do like those but I'm definitely not that old

Great minds think alike, I'm planning those

It could have been designed for future upgrades, you never know
I was on it just the other day.
Has much changed or is it practically the same

I think your comment is in reference to auto shenanigans video on the central motorway

I was not born yet during ge downgrade of the m10 motorway beacuse i was born in 2015
That makes me feel old, I was born 3 months before the A6144(M) lost motorway status in 2006, I was 9 in 2015 (Wow 😦 that long already)
Worst subtitles ever?
To be honest I agree with you, I was having so many technical issues with the editing software and it was an alright mess
The A414 is the link between the M1 and the A1. I vaguely remember it being the M10
