I genuinely request you that plz dedicate one podcast for Indian festivals…. Because a small 10-15 min video won’t be enough to cover festivals from all states… you can pick one festival from all states. This will give you a lot of cultural information about the country, the people, the history etc

Navratri is a nine-night Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Durga, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. During this time, Garba, a vibrant folk dance from Gujarat, is performed. Participants dance in circles around a lighted lamp or statue of the Goddess, celebrating femininity and life’s cycles. Dancers wear colorful traditional attire, with women in chaniya cholis and men in kafni pyjamas. The dance fosters community spirit and is enjoyed by people of all ages, making it a joyful expression of devotion and cultural heritage

The dance practice for the festival starts almost 1 month before and garba itself is a dance style with different types of dance steps according to the number of times we clap hands. It is celebrated all over India in different ways. like on small scale it is celebrated in each and every residential society amongst its residents and also on very large scale at different centers made for garba celebrations in a city where almost 2000-3000 people participate together. Also on these 9 days feminine energy is worshiped and lot of hindu people invite little girls from their localities to their homes for a feast called "kanya bhojan" (kanya means girl and bhojan means meal) and then give them little gifts or money to show their respect.

The word 'Garba' has a derivation from the word Garbh (womb) for celebrating the feminine divine as a provider of life itself. This festival spans 9 nights (Nav Ratri literally translates to 9 nights), which symbolizes the 9 months of pregnancy. If you look at the dance from a drone pov, you'd notice that everyone is dancing in concentric circles. This symbolizes the circle of life and death and re-birth. The synchronized claps represent the comfort of the heartbeats of the mother felt by the new life in the womb. Essentially, this festival is the celebration of life. And it's a lot of fun too!

Navratri lasts for 9 days because it represents the worship of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Each day is dedicated to one of her manifestations, symbolizing different aspects of the divine feminine power (Shakti). Here's a brief explanation of the significance:
Shailaputri: Day 1 represents strength and nature.
Brahmacharini: Day 2 stands for austerity and penance.
Chandraghanta: Day 3 symbolizes courage and bravery.
Kushmanda: Day 4 is for energy and creation.
Skandamata: Day 5 signifies motherhood and love.
Katyayani: Day 6 represents warrior power and fearlessness.
Kalaratri: Day 7 symbolizes the destruction of evil and darkness.
Mahagauri: Day 8 stands for peace and purity.
Siddhidatri: Day 9 represents wisdom and perfection.
These nine days celebrate the triumph of good over evil and the different qualities of the goddess.

Navratri is celebrated all over India, but the way it is observed varies from region to region. Here are some regional highlights:
Gujarat: Navratri is most famously celebrated with Garba and Dandiya Raas, traditional dances that take place every night during the festival.
West Bengal: In Bengal, it coincides with Durga Puja, where huge idols of Goddess Durga are worshipped, and cultural events, feasts, and processions are organized.
Maharashtra: People perform Garba and Dandiya, much like Gujarat, and offer prayers to the goddess for prosperity.
South India (Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka): Navratri is celebrated with Golu, where artistic displays of dolls are arranged, and families visit each other’s homes to see these displays.
North India (Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab): Navratri is marked by fasting and Ram Leela performances, leading up to Dussehra, which commemorates the victory of Lord Ram over Ravana.
So, while Navratri is celebrated across India, its customs and traditions reflect the cultural diversity of each region.

Most people just roam around and visit these places to see the artistic pandals. Do check out a video for Durga Puja Kolkata.

In navratri usually we fast for nine days for different avatars of goddess durga from the softest heart to the strongest one. So from the morning we fast and pray to the goddess and in the evening we perform garba. Sometimes who cannot fast for nine days they do one or two then worship the real goddess in the form of little girls who are below 12 they feed them food, clean their feet with water and clothes then worship them and send them back to their home and then they have food.
On the 8th day we generally pray to our family good for goodness and happiness.
On the 10th day we celebrate dashara. You will find its videos on 13 October this year because it's on 12 October evening.

I can’t believe you guys reacted to Falguni Pathak. There’s people who get a 9-Day Pass just to enjoy and listen to her. I was one of them when I was back in India. She’s called as a Dandiya Queen; one of the most popular artists for Navratri.
The literal translation for Navratri is (Nav = Nine) and (Ratri = Nights); basically Nine-Nights. It is celebrated just like any other festival in India with the message of “Good triumphs over Evil”. Each night is dedicated to one of the 9 Hindu Goddesses and it is celebrated in a sense that each goddess came out and slayed a monster/devil every night and that’s what’s it about.
Although the veneration (pooja) or worshipping happens all over India but mainly this dance (called as Garba) mainly is very prominent in Mumbai, parts of Maharashtra and all of Gujarat. (Obviously, other parts of India too? But not on this large scale.
This period of the year, all over India is celebrated for victory of good over evil. The 10th day is called as Dussehra which is basically when lord Rama killed Ravana (the 10 headed man) and shortly after this, within a fortnight or 20 days we celebrate Diwali which again is Lord Rama returning to his home after killing Ravana.

I am from the south we have a lot of rituals in temple and in most of the durga temples People who were training dancing/ singing will have their arangetarm (The end of dancer's or singer's initial training and the beginning of their professional career as dancer /singer) Or in this auspicious day people who are interested in these activities will join for their first classes. On the 8th day we will keep our books ,vehicles for pooja (it is a ritual that is done by the preists infront of god to protect us from accidents, or to get good knowledge etc) we shouldn't learn anything or we shouldn't drive at these days and on dussehra the 10th day we can take our books or vehicles back from pooja and after praying we can use them we wont eat any non veg food and there are still a lot things .. nava means 9 and rathri means nights

The word NAV means 9 and RATRI means night. Navratri is celebrated with the most intensity in West Bengal (you should watch a video of phenomenol "pandaals" that are set up there ) and the garba dance that you saw is done with most intensity in Gujarat. However, the worship of the Goddess is done by every Hindu all over India and same goes for garba and pandaals. A few weeks prior to Navratri is celebrated 'Ganesh Chaturthi' (Maharashtra) and after Navratri comes Karwa chauth and then DIWALI!!! however to explain to you the meaning of 9 days in comments is a tough task :( but the meaning is very beautiful as it is the celebration of divine feminine so u may watch vdos for that (highly recommended).

    Hey Waleska and Erfa,
I've been a huge fan of your channel and was thrilled to see you react to one of my all-time favorite festivals-Navratri! Let me share a little about it. Navratri is a nine-day festival dedicated to worshipping goddesses, celebrated in different ways across India. What you saw in the Falguni Pathak video is a glimpse of the Gujarati style of celebrating with traditional folk music and dance.
In Mumbai and Gujarat, we celebrate Navratri with "garba" every evening, a joyful and energetic dance performed in a circle to honor the goddesses. In the mornings, many people fast as part of their devotion. The Falguni Pathak Navratri event is truly one of the best in Mumbai, if not the entire country. It’s a ticketed event where you can either buy a season pass for all nine nights or get daily passes for specific days.
If you ever plan to visit India, I’d highly recommend coming between September and November-that’s when the festival season kicks off, starting with Ganesh Chaturthi, followed by Navratri, and then Diwali. It’s an incredible time to experience back-to-back celebrations!
    Love,
    Jill

In Trinidad and Tobago just off the coast of Venezuela we have the type of culture you are describing where there is a melting pot of religions and people. Heavily influenced by our history, our foods, culture and music is a mixture of our Indian and African ancestors. With a substantial Hindu, Muslim and Christian population we also celebrate the festivities of Naavraatri and Divali as well as Eid, Easter and Christmas (marked with National holidays in most cases).
To bring it back to music, arguably our most popular musical export aside from the steel pan is Soca Music and Calypso but we also have music influenced by our Indian ancestors and also Bollywood such as chutney music. Our music is heavily linked to our history, which is linked to our ancestry but also undeniably from Trinidad and Tobago.

The dance practice for the festival starts almost 1 month before the festival and garba itself is a dance style with different types of dance steps according to the number of times we clap hands.

In India, different regions celebrate this festival in unique ways. In Bengal, we call it "Durga Pujo," which honors Goddess Durga's victory over evil. This vibrant celebration lasts for 10 days and is filled with elaborate rituals, cultural events, and community gatherings. The festivities culminate on Vijaya Dashami (Day 10), when we immerse the idols of the goddess in water, symbolizing her return to her heavenly home.
A fun fact: there's a special radio program called "Mahishasura Mardini," which translates to "the one who killed the buffalo demon." It’s India's longest-running radio show, starting back in 1931! For many Bengalis, including me, this program marks the arrival of Durga Puja and holds a special place in our hearts. The beautiful music by Pankaj Mullick and the narration by Birendra Krishna Bhadra create a nostalgic atmosphere. I remember my parents waking me up before dawn to listen to it on the radio- it was like a signal that our holidays had begun! It was also a time for buying new clothes and enjoying delicious food together. During these 10 days, people are so enthusiastic that they hardly sleep, fully enjoying the celebrations!

Existence itself of anything, is an integral part of Energy or Goddess Shakti. She's worshipped as the Goddess Energy. Ancient sages mentioned Energy as a feminine Lord or Goddess. From visible to non visible form of every creation, is considered as a part of her. "Energy can neither be created nor can be destroyed" as we learnt in schools..
