Great video! Really gives me inspiration to finish my 91 cabby. I paid $200 for it, and saved it from going to the scrap yard. I'll always remember driving my friends 16v Scirocco before he went 1.8t with it, and then he couldn't keep it reliable. Eventually my friend gave up on his Scirocco when he got MS, and couldn't work on it anymore. He parted out his car and I purchased his big turbo 1.8t and installed into my Porsche 914.I took out the g60 I had installed in the 914. I'm now putting my old g60, I had laying around with a BBM lysholm charger (sounds like a fire truck siren having sex with an air raid siren) into it the Cabby. I took the lysholm charger off of my 16v g60 thinking that my old 8v g60 would fit better but the rad is the most challenging item to fit and i should have just committed to installing the 16v g60 . I'm also converting it from automatic to standard with an O2J transmission, as I thought that the g60 would rip an O2O apart with all the torque. I imagine that mine will also destroy some motor mounts, it seems rock solid for now, but my old Corrados would destroy front mounts g60 and VR.
Great car! Here in RSA it is the cult car of our nation. Last country in the world who built the mk1 until 2009.I have owned many cars in my life but the current two mk1's, lovingly modified over a 10 year period, is the most satisfying of them all to drive/race.
The beauty of the that Mk1 is it was everything it needed it to be imo. Decent power to weight ratio and pretty easy to work on. These Mk1 Golf/Rabbit/Cabrio videos always make me miss my 84’ Rabbit GTI. Maybe a long drive in the Mk7 GTI will make me forget😢😕😐😏
My dad had one of these. It felt so fast at the time. Now my car does 0-60 in half the time. The dog used to lie on the area behind the back seat, in front of the window. Later, my brother took the car to raves in the fields of the English countryside
You guys made me miss my '84.5 Cabby. I used to drive it out on HWY 1 north of where you guys are. People would laugh until I would leave them sitting there in the corners. Great car! I have a swallowtail hood for you that I was going to use on my car but it had frame damage. I'm just a bit North from you.
Glad I found this and it makes me long to get my old '89 back on the road. This is a beautiful Cabby and a nice approach to getting "sleeper-value" out of a "cute" car (the most common comment I'd get from female admirers of my '89 lol). Loved the commentary throughout and comparing notes with my subtle suspension mods to make it a wee bit more stiff while still drivable as a daily. I debated dropping a VR6 in (a friend's was eating Vettes back in the day, which is rather humbling lol) but I prefer simply playing with a few minor upgrades just to keep the car fun. I love these final vestiges of the Rabbit, even as a 6-foot-tall guy... Sense of humor is a must! :)

Outstanding! This is why I watch car videos. It's cars like this that put all these new ridiculous super cars to shame.
As a former owner of Mk II GTI, can confirm the comfort of the seats.
Small FWD cars set-up to handle well are great.
This was dope! Id love to see Cammisa's wagon next! Itd be sssssssiiiiiiiiiccccccccckkkkkkkkk! Awesome video Zack
After he was on the podcast recently, I was so excited for this review. Long live the Bitch Basket!
I can't believe I've never heard them called that before! Especially since I've owned two '85s.
Great car!
Jason - I have a few VWs and parts if you need anything for your Cabby. I have a set of good B pillers seals if you need them.
Wish I could get a Clio 172 Cup over to you guys in the US.
Zach I grew up in K Town and I used to run west to Arden and back. Best neighborhood in LA, K Town.
Great! Really loved this episode. Especially the talk at the end!
"a Cesna running out of gas" So accurate LOL... Love Fiats though!
I love that you keep driving in circles!
This is awesome my first car was a geo storm second a 1982 Mk1 Wolfsburg cabriolet…. So much fun and looking to buy another and very inspired by this build !!
Jason is my favorite automotive journalist!
^^ I approve of this comment. Thank you!
Jason Cammisa is such a G. I'd listen to him talk about CPAP machines if he felt strongly enough about them.
I will never look at Vw “cabbies” the same. Zacks hauling in that thing.
I also like how after Zack drops the f bomb it becomes contagious. Always happens.
FYI The road they are driving on is the Cummins Skyway near Crockett CA. If you’re ever in the area check out Port Costa and the warehouse cafe.
I've never really liked little cars like this, but I have to admit: I was laughing my ass off every time you filmed a fly-by. That thing screams. Just a cool little car all the way around. Great project.
So, so jealous! One wicked little ride that I'd take over just about anything else. Smiles per mile, can't beat it
Jason's the man! Another great video with Zack and the crew at TheSmokingTire, nice job!!!
