- There is an art to picking a watermelon. I am going to tell you 3 tips to pick a perfectly ripe watermelon, so you can pick a ripe and sweet watermelon every single time. The tips include color, sound, stem condition, and give to the skin of the watermelon. Watermelons do not ripen after they are picked so it is crucial to pick a watermelon that ripened on the vine. A ripe watermelon means it is sweet and filled with water.

Thank you so much for your tips. I'm 44yrs old and never knew how to pick a ripe one. But now i do so i will definitely pick my first watermelon this summer.
Glad you like the video!
and all under 3 min. sweet
I've never been able to tell one thump sound from another. I always go by the big yellow spot. I didn't know about the stem, either. Thank you for this. With summer coming on, it's a timely instruction.
Clear, concise and to the point. Well done sir
They sounded different when you cut them! Love watermelon fresh water!
Summer would not be complete without RIPE watermelon.
Brown, yellow, hollow, press. Got it 👍🏻 Thanks
At last a way to do without thumping, ( I am hearing impaired) I Like this!!!
Great info. Didn't know about the dry stem and yellow spot.
Thanks!
Well I could definitely find it faster by googling but google can't hold a candle to witnessing you demonstrate the sounds. You win this round!
Hi Jag, we learn something new every day and if we don’t then we are not living our lives to their full potential. Cheers 🍉
Thanks again for the ripe tips, you are the best ! Don’t stop
Thanks. I always wanted to know how to pick a perfect watermelon! 🍉 🍉
You’re welcome 😊
Me too

I’m stopping tomorrow and getting a watermelon. They look delicious. Thank you.
Great! I’m excited for this watermelon season.🎉
Brother, you just helped make my Summer a tastier one!
Thanks!

Thanks for the tips! Looks yummy!! 😋🍉
Thanks, Jag. My dad taught me the first tip (thumping on the watermelon by 'flicking' my thumb & index finger on it listening for a 'thud' noise for ripeness.) Didn't know the other two. I've learned something new! 🍉
Jack Is Back, Thanks for this info Jack
:)
Thank you so much. I also liked watching you cut the watermelon in half because that’s difficult too. It looks like you kind of stabbed and cut half way through then couldn’t tell after that.
Thanks Jag, knew about the knocking, did not know the other 2.
This is clear how you demonstrated this. Thank you, Jag😊
The first two tips were counterintuitive to me, so thank you for making this video!
Great tips! Hopefully I pick a good one next time!
Once again, you've taught me something I didn't know I love watermelons but at times got a unripe one which was disappointing. Thanks to you I'm going to have a much better year. Kisses to Lily
Mmm that makes me hungry for watermelon 🍉 😋
Great video Jag.

Looks great
Now I know! All these years of hit or miss ❤
Thanks that’s really helpful advice.
Perfect Jag - thanks!
How about an episode on how you grow them that well?
I’m growing watermelons in Australia in a temperate climate. I picked one prematurely because it sounded hollow but was white in the middle. Went to check on another one and it broke off the vine🙄. It was going red and tasted ok. Still have 2 on the vine so I’m going to watch out for these signs. Thank you😘
Thank you!!!
Great video. 😋 I’ve also heard to look for scars from bees. I never knew about the stems. Thanks, Jag!
Thanks Jag! The best watermelons are the ones with seeds.
Thank you! I’m giving a try on watermelon this year, this was very helpful.
If I find a watermelon at the local farmers’ market I will definitely want one with those wonderful black seeds that are so much fun to “deal with”😊.
Brilliant video! I've used the stem trick to pick cantaloupe for decades but never thought to apply it to choosing watermelon (head slap). Now I really want some watermelon but my seeds haven't even sprouted yet.
Great tips! Who would have known.
❤ Thank you!
I love watermelon with seeds.

Good tips
Thank you! Love getting those tips ❤! Question - do you have acorn squash picking tips?
My Chinese wife always says to get a watermelon with a small a**. She's referring to the end opposite the stem. So far, for the past 12 years, she's never picked a bad one.
Thank you!
Thanks 🙏
Excellent thx
Thank you...
Love from assam 🇮🇳
Thank you
thanks
soo good to know
Love your tips! Would be great to be your neighbor!
Do you do Farm trips, I would love to visit! Pls do share, I truly mean it!
Man, you went through a lot of trouble just to justify a watermelon treat! ;-) Thanks! Good info.
plz do video on how to thin melon vines, important not to skip over this step. should suckers be cut off main stem? Kevin at Epic says to leave 2 melons per plant which means many have to be removed. how do you choose which melons to leave...those growing closest to root or those at farther end of vine? should stem be severed after 2nd melon so plant doesnt put energy into leaves after last melon? do all leaves nourish melon whether they grow past melon or before? when to stop watering for sweeter crop?
my melon patch was failure last year bcz i didnt know the answers to these questions. vines produced 80 melons and only 4 were edible. how often to fertlize, and what is best to usr (for growing organic)? I'm in Zone 9b Ca.
That's so cool thank you. Hope you do have avocados 😋🥑
I pat them to assess the water content by feel and sound....its never been wrong.. illnusenyour tios along with my method..
Thank you Bhaji but plz tell us how to pick ripe cantaloupe
Insert watermelon jokes >
cool
Hey Jag I have a question what happened to the dark green Georgia cannon ball watermelons those were so sweet and dark red inside I haven't found those in stores anymore
The perfect watermelon has seeds
I find that if you want a good right sweet watermelon grow it yourself or find a farmer who grows and pick some at the right time it's hard to find a good watermelon in the grocery stores.
I remember this from you from years ago, and the brown stem always works!
“The theory is true “ -> Jag’s law of WM ripeness :)
