Capitalism And The American Pandemic Response

  • This video is a major departure from the usual content on my channel, but I think it's necessary. This particular moment in American and world history demands that we all take an honest look at the trajectory of the United States of America. The current system is untenable and the Coronavirus pandemic has laid bare how truly ill-prepared the country is to protect its citizens. When corporations and the ultra-wealthy are the primary concern of those in power, the majority will suffer. This video is my attempt to contribute some small amount to the national conversation about what America is, and what it needs to become.

I know, right? Second Thought has gotten increasingly more political since this coronavirus pandemic. (sigh) Well, he can only make so many videos about the biggest flaws with the bad way American governors run things. Some of them even feel like different versions of the same video four times. What makes Why the United States Can't Handle Crises a different topic from Why Capitalism Can't Handle Climate Change? What makes America's Looming Housing Crisis a different topic from America's Looming Eviction Crisis? I hope Second Thought will return to his usual content when this video is three years old, because this pandemic and the buzz that it gave unregulated capitalism can only last so long. Biznis Man Yeah, but our government is so stuck up with getting profits that they don’t give a shit about individuals, they don’t care about schooling or healthcare or other basic human needs. I don’t entirely agree with the whole “Socialism is the only true way” that some preach, but there is definitely some things to be learned.
America may claim to be a Democracy, but that’s only true at the town and maybe state level. The Federal government isn’t a Democracy. It’s an Oligarchy. A rich few try to further their own interests by getting themselves involved with government. And their ivory towers are so fucking high that they physically cannot see the class below them. That’s the issue, the government doesn’t serve the people. It serves the companies, the corporations, itself, and not the people.
America is the perfect example of late-stage capitalism. The corporations are so big, the government is too concerned with serving them rather than serving the people. Occasionally a few scraps will be thrown, a few dollars will be given, but then they turn around and give the corporations a feast, and give them multi million - sometimes billion - dollar bailouts.
We need a return to the original American way, where the people were cared for.
Where the people actually had power.

Think of it this way, many communist groups are gaining more land and power in the third world and I’m almost certain this pandemic has made many more class conscious and critical of the dogshit system that they’ve been convinced to believe is the only solution, that universal healthcare is too expensive and that anything even remotely social democratic is the second coming of Hitlerite Socialism, whatever that even means.
The left is (slowly) gaining more influence. And socialists are too not just social democrats although many modern social democrats in my opinion are socialists in waiting after talking to them and realising they just hadn’t had socialism explained well enough and someone who cared to answer questions.

Watching your videos, it seems to me that in America there are also real communist-socialist-Marxists, and not only SJW and social democrats, who are slipping into opportunism and defense of capitalism, but capitalism is softer.
Many in Russia still dream of the "American Dream" that everyone can be rich. The effect is that we have not yet lived enough under capitalism and we still have "rudiments" of socialism like free medicine, but capitalism is slowly taking these "rudiments" back. In our country, thousands of industries, schools, hospitals are being closed, while thousands of churches are being built. In 2021, the number of churches in Russia exceeded the number of schools. There were unemployed and homeless people. Prices for everything are constantly growing, not keeping up with the growth of wages, while under socialism it was the opposite - prices never changed and wages increased.

Why are you people (ignorant socialists) so against making profit? Why is making extra money for yourself so demonized? You socialist loons want to be taken seriously? If you are wondering why's wrong with America these days, why so much violence, hate, anger. I think the real problem is CAPITALISM.
In a society where the wealthy control the power and media, it's inevitable for they will seek a system that would perpetuate their status, where the rich stays rich and the poor remain poor. Looking at the microscopic(individual) level, you might find few success stories where the poor, through hard work and ingenuity became the rich. But on the macro level, the rich stayed rich and the poor remained poor for generations. If you think to yourself that owning a big house and a nice car makes you an "upper-middle-class", that's just naive. Middle-class was an invented idea to make people feel better about themselves, in the end, it's still part of the working-class, people who exchange their labor and time for money.
In such system, poor white feel their opportunity has been taken away by immigrants, poor black feels the lasting oppression of racism. The Healthcare system is a perpetual nightmare because it puts profits before people. The defense spending is out of proportion because the military-industrial complex constantly looking for enemies. The education system burdens students with a ridiculous amount of student loans because universities run like businesses. Gun control becomes a chronic discussion because NRA needs to take a stance on some "freedom/profit" issue. All while those are happening, there are endless entertainment, sports, and "breaking news" to keep us all distracted.
It's really a wonderful country to be a wealthy person, and I really hope I'll become one despite all the odds, LOL

Sadly humans can no longer turn back the clock or slow/stop the clock since the late Prof Sagan calculated that humans has progressed pass the Тип 0.7 stage. If Dr Kaku projections are correct, humans will face greater hardships & dangers as it progress towards a Тип 1 civilization. Unfortunately the clock is ticking & the late Prof Hawkings projected humans has only ≈ 1 to 10 thousand years left to reach Тип 1 or face certain extinction/apocalypse.
Perhaps the common people will need someone like V, Batman, Zorro or Robin Hood to “Flatten Capitalism” or “Flatten the Pyramid” & replace it with a society that's more forcus on building a Тип 1 civilization.

There are distinctions within the working population that have proved to be useful in political analysis.
For example, Marxism used to split this class into the proletariat (the people who are forced to work for the owners [the "bourgeoisie"] to not starve to death) and the "petite bourgeoisie" (people who own small means of production (bar, fuel station, shops,...) and can't live without working, unlike the bourgeoisie). The distinction is important because the petite bourgeoisie doesn't have much to gain from fighting the bourgeoisie, and it certainly has a lot to lose in political instability or collectivization, in opposition with the proletariat that has pretty much nothing to lose anyway. It was for example the case of the Kulaks in USSR. Consequently, not all the working population has the same political interests.
Plus nowadays, additional distinctions could be added within the working population using technical/education level. There are many people who don't own any mean of production ( => they're a part of the proletariat class), but own rare technical skills that give them a lot of power over employers, which allows them to receive more than decent salaries. This subcategory of the proletariat gains a lot from the current situation, and would maybe not want things to change.
I won't talk too much about this, but the owning class could also be divided into the people who own the means of production, and the people who only own money that allows them to gain more money using the financial markets. Their respective interests can also be contradictory in many cases.
Additionally, a political analysis can't only take economic interest into account. People are guided by many values, and these can differ within the working population. Especially people from different regions and different education levels usually have a different cultural background and different political views.

They won´t show you skid row, with tent cities stretching to the horizon. Nor will it show the drug use, and thousands of opiate overdoses. It won´t show the poverty stricken shanty towns and dilapidated social housing projects. It won´t show the gangs, the police shootings, the school shootings, and the millions withering away in prison, doing slave labor.
It won´t show the lobbies bribing their way in Washington, the political parties stealing elections, and robbing non aligned candidates from equal media exposure. It won´t show the corruption and speculation of Wall Street, the unemployment, and the many millions of people without health care. They won´t show the thousands of dollars charged for an ambulance ride, or a simple tooth extraction. It won´t show the disastrous state of american Education, with kids coming out of college not knowing shit about anything. And it won´t show the tinfoil hat buffoonery, with all the flat earthers, anti-vaxx, anti 5G and reptilian stupidity!
How the fuck did it got so bad?? America used to be awesome. Now it is a cesspool. What was once milk and honey is now piss and vinegar. But try telling that to any american...

The one big fear apart from gun based crime is the total lack of public healthcare and the very high cost of private healthcare. The experience of many is that if you are childless and healthy the US is better economically than Ireland. However if you have children education and childcare are very expensive and covering the cost of any health problem is ridiculously expensive. Many fundraising set-ups have had to be done by the Irish American community to cover the health care and repatriation costs of Irish citizens who were unfortunate enough to get injured or fall ill while uninsured on visits to the US. For many people the highest cost of a US trip is not the airfare or the accommodation but the insurance needed to be fully covered for health and injury risks in the US.

My mother was admitted to a public hospital for a heart attack, and discharged after 3 days with guaranteed future appointments with specialists. Her medical bill was 0 dollars and I am very grateful for that.
Of course her bills will be paid for by taxpayers' money, in which a large chunk of them will come from huge corporations. This is, like you said, playing according to the same rules where everyone pays their fair share of taxes and will be guaranteed a safety net by the government when they desperately need one. In America, this concept is will be mocked as filthy communism.

I live in a small country in central Europe, that is part of the EU. Watching what is happening in the U.S. is just making me sad. Our country is by no means fully communist or socialist - we have free markets, capital structures and rich people, but we add some reasonable social welfare policies to the mix - free healthcare (mandatory insurance), free education, state guaranteed pensions and so on. I often complain about how the politicians are corrupt, how we lack behind the western Europe, but boy I am so happy that I live here given the current situation.
The government responded surprisingly fast, we had < 10 confirmed cases when things started to happen - many shops and restaurants have to be closed, all international airports are nonoperational, public transport is limited, worker protection measures are quite heavily implemented, people are wearing face masks everywhere (if they can't buy one, the make it at home) etc. This might have economic consequences but at least it shows that even politicians and some "owners of capital" are at least partly considering the health of others. The results (after roughly a month after the first case): as of today only 728 total cases (out of which 23 have already recovered) and 2 dead.

if you are talking about Slovakia than people should know that part of the reason for that may be that regardless of covid-19 there is a high unemployment rate already, and the population is generally much older so they couldn't get away with doing nothing. the place has it's own problems too. Having said that i am happy and optimistic about their response, I don't feel like i need to worry too much about my grandparents.

    • @Jonas.N
      @Jonas.N 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

Daniela Elliott pretty much your whole comment is wrong. Yes, there is a higher unemployment rate and a higher average age. BUT: the unemployment rate is 1.7% higher than in the US. And the average age is 3 years older (all numbers before the crisis). You are writing like Slovakia is an underdeveloped country. It is not. It has pretty much everything that the US is asking for. More workers rights, affordable healthcare and a affordable university’s. The average cost for a medical degree is 8.500$ per year in Slovakia. In the US the average is 70.000$ per YEAR. And the Slovakian universities are good and respected around the globe. The country is everything the US workers want, minus the „weak“ economy.
