The reason why people are so puzzled by Phasma's betrayal is because she was hyped as the ideal First Order hero. One of the visual guides I read (which came out on the same day as TFA) established that Phasma was loyal to the First Order and thought that the Empire failed BECAUSE of a lack of loyalty and dedication. She went out of her way to give troops proper training throughout and would even walk through Starkiller Base on foot just to personally inspect things and inspire discipline. There wasn't even a truly practical purpose for this, as it took time- She did it out of a fanatical pride for the First Order. ....And then, right out of the blue she betrays the First Order in record time and suddenly she's retconned as a back stabber. Which is fine, it's just that having all this other promotional material suggest otherwise is frustrating.
Most of that is propaganda of the first order phasma herself is more than just a soldier but a important part of the first order propaganda as such she has a Mythos that has been built around her by the first order. But it's all an act, that she does in order to improve her chances of survival.
I love learning about stuff like this, especially as a fan of Phasma -- even in spite of the, at first, seeming lunacy of her giving up so easily in TFA. But that's why channels like this are great. Thanks!
sXeblues Fair enough. The thing is I like learning about this stuff too. It's super interesting. But my issue is I don't really need a backstory on why Phasma lowered the shields when the reason was plainly obvious. I think explaining that IN-DEPTH is unnecessary.
Monthly Gamer I don't particularly agree that her motivations were in any way obvious. As I remember being completely blindsided by her giving up so hilariously easily, and was even a mite peeved at how it seemed completely out of nowhere, and was left entirely unexplained. So for me, the depth and realization that these insights bring to her, are very welcome. But, to each their own.
faxanadu13 I don't think it was made clear, in TFA, anyway. We didn't get nearly enough 'character' out of Phasma in that movie, as I would have liked.
sXeblues But why were you blindsided? Because you assumed that she was loyal? She wasn't! I wasn't blindsided because nothing about Phasma's character in The Force Awakens screams "LOYAL TO THE END." She didn't have enough screen time to do so.

Based solely on what we see of him in the movies, I always thought it was weird that Boba Fett was so popular. Guess what people actually liked was his gear, not the character.
So, once again, "bad guys" don't really have loyal followers, anyone are just looking for their own. One of the most intriguing characters turned out to be unprincipled thug. I love Kylo Ren, but he is obviously unstable, Hux has сonfidence problems, so I was hoping Phasma will turn out to be a competent commander. You can't really empathize with the heroes if antagonists are so weak.
Well when you are in a war cult that literally worships dark emotions like lust for power, greed, and self desires above all, it tends not to breed loyalty. There are exceptions, but they're, well, exceptions. Sith's greatest enemies usually were other Sith for a reason. And that is why the rule of two came about.
I have a feeling that whatever Ren and Snoke are will be more or less mirrored in the training of Rey by Luke. At least for the most part of tLJ. We know Luke is not so keen to the whole idea of Jedi now and Daisy has said long ago she's not sure if her character becomes a Jedi in the upcoming episode. So we're probably going to have the dark side-not-really-Sith users on one end and light side-not-really-Jedi on another. And it makes me so excied to see how it'll play out and what are the motives behind Luke's and Snoke's decissions, or if they will even turn out to have a simillar goal, but only different idea of how to reach it. That would be interesting indeed.
Bill O'Brien I am aware of all that. I just find it bad writing to come up with a faction of fanatics I am probably never going to care about and having said faction be the Empire's replacement
Advance Gaming YT Well, it has certainly replaced the Empire as the villains and the counterpart of the New Republic/Resistance. It might be more accurate to call the First Order the Empire's successor rather than its replacement, however, given how it was founded by former Imperials. It's people already regard themselves as better than the Empire. They just need to eliminate their enemies and regain control of the galaxy to prove it.
All you said is true, but I am surprised you didn't talk about what the movie novelization says: She managed a slight shake of her head. “Even a Wookiee can’t crush First Order armor.” In response, Chewbacca tightened his grip further. Her mask emitted a slight but perceptible wheeze. “Well,” Han said nonchalantly, “there’s one way to find out.” (i.e. she didn't want her skull crushed!)
Thank you so much for this video, it always really bugged me how she let the shields down so easily. Now it makes perfect sense and this explanation makes Phasma even more fascinating to me now. Thank you!
I think the real reason why Phasma's only contribution to the plot is betraying her allies by lowering the shields of Starkiller Base is that the script of The Force Awakens was developed before her character was, so in an attempt to make her meaningful for the plot, they added the scene where she lowered the shields. Nevertheless, I will forgive the creators of The Force Awakens if they make good use of her egoistic behavior in Episodes VIII and IX, I would love to see her defect to the Resistance when they start to gain the upper hand, for example. :)
Jennifer Brewer I know, but I'm wondering whether this character trait of her was planned from the beginning, or they added it later when they realised that Phasma betraying the First Order like that would make no sense otherwise.
Clickbait leads to more views, more views lead to more ad revenue, more ad revenue leads to more cash, more cash leads to greed, and greed leads to unspeakable suffering.
The Scoundrel's Cantina You're not wrong, but this isn't really something TFA 'needs.' All the relevant information you need to follow the main characters' archs is still there in the film. Stuff like the backstories of minor characters is okay to flesh out in outside material. I think the prequels and Rogue One to an extent are much more guilty of leaving essential information to outside material.
And what's worse, this makes the First Order exponentially more incompetent! Why would they trust someone like her with the defensive codes? Judging from this explanation, I believe there will also not be a satisfactory explanation of Rey's extreme powers.
Tyler, if the prequels are guilty of anything, it's that they opened up more plot holes than they actually covered up. Rogue One at least stuck to one plot hole and did it well enough that you don't have to sit there wondering if it was still plausible or not. I never really cared for why Phasma gave up so easily, considering the Empire/First Order has always been filled with backstabbers and those who are out to only save their own skin rather than be for the greater "good" of the faction. Phasma is just a weak character like Boba Fett, but for some reason gets all the glory.
Oh, you know, things like Anakin building C3P0, not remembering him or R2D2 when he was Vader, R2 having rockets in his legs, Leia remember her mother even though she never met her (Padame' died when she was born). Why did Obi-Wan say Anakin wanted Luke to have his lightsaber? Why did Obi-Wan say Yoda trained him? Qui-Gon trained him. Why did Obi-Wan call Vader "Darth" as a name instead of a title? He knew the Sith used "Darth" as a title. Granted, some can be chalked up to the fact that Lucas didn't know much of this when Star Wars came out, but he effectively created so many plot holes that you can't cover them up. I really am nitpicking here and not trying to argue, but it bugs me how people say The Force Awakens is trash, but forget just how badly the rest of the series really is when you look very close at the details. That being said, I'm still a fan and I will continue as long as I can.
The Scoundrel's Cantina One that bugged me was the fact that in the original trilogy, the jedi and the force were treated as myth, with people like Han and even high ranking imperial officers dismissing them as "fairy tales and sorcery". Yet according to the prequels, they had a hugely public role in the clone wars and the government not 20 years prior. Did the galaxy really just forget about that whole "guardians of peace and justice for over a thousand generations" thing in less than two decades?
Why Phasma was doomed to be disappointing in TFA from the start: Designer creates a shinny stormtrooper suit for Kylo Ren but the design is rejected for that character. The powers to be of course see that design as interesting (I like it) and importantly as very marketable and decide to use it for another character. They decide to give the role to a woman (we never had a female stormtrooper in the original trilogy) and they push the character as this important and badass high ranked soldier of the First order that will gain everyones's attention. And then the movie happened and we were like " But from a story point of view this was a very underwhelming and underused character" and Disney was like " But you've already bought all the toys havent you?"
I like your point and combining it with my own we see that the advertising policy cost a lot to the character. Maybe we can make an analogy between phasma and Mace Windu. Both were played by recognizable actors and both had minor roles in the movies they first appeared. But there is no one that has an issue with Mace Windu's arc in TPM. In the frame of the story his involvement feels natural. Now lets imagine that back then it was heavilly advertised that Samuel Jackson would play a truly badass, respectable, yoda level important jedi. Who wouldn't thought that Mace Windu wasn't a disappointment in the movie then? Of course the irony is that this happened to the movie as a whole.
Its JJ's style. Wow you with flashy visuals and sacrifice plot because the target audience is suppose to be too dumb to notice. Same thing happened to Star Trek 2009.
- Discarding a character because she was only validated by her story in the books - Cites a character from Game of Thrones, a series that took it's entire plot from books. Phasma is a perfectly valid character. Just because she didn't have the best introduction doesn't discard her character. Specially when you're comparing it to a series that has hour-long episodes, and therefore, much more time to invest in a character's backstory, unlike a single movie.
Joshua Fuentes Which is why this channel exists. Not everyone reads the books and star wars was always more than movies. We would have a very basic understanding of everything without the additional material.
Delilah is one of the best Star Wars writers. These characters were so well-drawn, and despite the endless bloodbath, nobody was wasted. Can't wait to see if there's a future for Vi, Siv, and Cardinal in canon.
Here's an interesting thought after Last Jedi, she'll be back in the next movie, specifically hunting Fin for his burning of her face. Her face plate was cracked as she fell through the flames. We never saw what was under those flames in the final cut. The flames scar her exposed, unprotected face, she survives and is now hunting the man she thinks marked her. Complete conjecture on my part, but it would interesting if they set the character up as a "Fett" type Bounty Hunter.
I got the book the other day along with Tarkin and two new copies of the RC books. I went through it in several hours despite work because I kept opening it again to continue. It uses an interesting and familiar method to tell the story. by the way, who is reading the book and is it abridged?
I HEAVILY recommend Star Wars Battlefront II Inferno Squadrons Audio book over it's written, because Janina Gavankar who voices Iden in the upcoming game actually narrates the audiobook and does a FANTASTIC job as it. Possibly the best female narration I have ever heard. Marc Thompson is the best narrator overall but January Lavoy is really good too.
Perhaps. The problem is that Soundwave (in any continuity) was known for his loyalty to Megatron... Shockwave, in the comics, was governed by logic which put him at odds with Megatron. I think a better analogy, now that I've thought about it, for Phasma would be Kamjin from Macross (Khyron in Robotech) because he was known as a backstabber and ally killer
While that is true for a lot of the film (seriously, would spending 5 min explaining the resistance & first order been such a bad thing! ), I thought the reason was rather obvious here; a blaster to the head.
Yakov Merkin I mean, it's not like the movie ever demonstrates her willingness to die for the cause. You just assumed that about her and the saw the contradiction of it as a plot hole.
The Phasma book is really good and I had to read it before watching this video. This adds so much more to her story than what was shown in the film. Hopefully they will show off her badass side in The Last Jedi.
She lowered the shields because she didn't want to die. Does this really need to be explained? We don't need to know her birth story to know why she made a very obvious and rational decision.
She is supposed to be absolutely loyal to the first order. You'd think that would mean giving up her own life to save starkiller base, kylo ren, hux and millions of troopers. But her loyalty was assumed by myself and probably most others but this has been retconned.
Monthly Gamer My thoughts after the scene was that, she properly thought the resistance did not have a chance of destroying Starkiller base. So even if she lowed the shields, it would not matter. P.S. I am danish, so sorry if there are gramma mistakes.
Stormtrooper superiors are known to be *very* loyal, to the point where they would, without a doubt, rather die than risking the organization that they serve. This was established over and over by the prequels, Clone Wars, and the comics. So, unless you don't know/care at all about inconsistencies, this *was* necessary.
Henrik Christoffersen lol no you're fine man, I understand you enough. But anyway I'm not saying you're wrong, but what caused her to lower the shields in the first place was that she had a gun to her face. So I see that as her surrendering. Even if she lowered them because she thought the resistance wouldn't succeed anyway, I would still see that as an excuse for her to survive.
Phasma is proof it takes more than looking cool, having a pleasant sounding English accent, and claimed to be a bad ass with a very important position to become instantly popular. The other half includes how they are written, their behavior, and actions. If I were the film makers or franchisers, I would try to make her actually behave or do stuff that grips more people enough to become captivated by her. Considering she has a book, they are on they already aware and on the right track.
I hope this will all be expanded upon in TLJ, otherwise it is just a cheap retconning to excuse a frail plot. Edit: Furthermore, I should not need a separate book from the film to explain why I should like a character, much less the movie.
meloncholy&macabre Nope. Even the prequels had better-developed characters than Phasma. She is just Boba Fett 2.0 until they give her more to do in the next film. Until then, a book is not going to excuse terrible filmmaking.
1:24 Why did you show this particular image of the Nightsisters? Are they related in any way to Phasma's homeworld? Interesting backstory. She's self-serving, but she's capable. Like a mercenary. I really wished that they made her this way in TFA or show it some more in TLJ just so that we are aware of what her character truly is like. The chrome armor was probably meant to further make her stand out as that symbol of power. I could probably see her forsaking it when she plans to leave the First Order.
I always thought one of the fun things about series-movies was that something that may seem odd/unexplained in one film will be further explained in a later episode. But nowadays everyone just cries, "Retcon!" when it happens. I just thought. "OH she's not as loyal to the Order as we/they thought!" And I'm sure it will be explained in the next movie. "Retcon!"
what i dont understand is that when rey is escaping, they inform all guards to be on lockdown, and phasma is just strolling on her own. where are her orders and why wasn't she with an escort of grunts? she better put up a fight in the next movie or she'll just be a waste of talent
JamesPlaysGames95 She was the head stormtroopers so can do what she likes. It would be like a military base commander locks down an instalation but leaves the base. He can do it cause he's the head hancho.
Hun:Lets make a savage a high rank officer in our army. First order anybody: Sir we have many qualified and military trained personal who has seen both active combat and various tactical training who are loyal to first order. Hux: I have seen her fight. I believe she is better then a standard stormtroper. Don't question my raisins! First order anybody: raisins sir? Hux: yes and I want apple juice and Mr snughlekins First order anybody: yes sir (then thinks) he is just a spoiled brat
Hux did not put her in command because she was a good fighter he had plenty of good Fighters in the book it makes it quite clear they put her in command cuz he might admired her leadership ability and the way she trained her soldiers from her tribe that accompanied them, also because she was was able to remain unattached from them even though she had been with them for many years and train them all herself she ultimately put the mission above them not unlike General hux which is why he put her in command. Specifically he put her in command of training Stormtroopers this is all explained in the book
A few more scenes and maybe one of her resisting would have helped her character a lot in Force Awakens. The scene seems even more baffling to be now that I read the book and having the book demonstrate what a fearsome fighter she was. Maybe show short fight with her and Chewbaca.
I wish we didn't have to seek out the books and things for a moment like that to make sense but still, it makes some sense. I'm gonna have to find the book too.
Look at the bright side. It's better than having a shitty script and no retconning at all. They didn't have to retcon shit, and still they did it, which means they *are* listening to feedback. Besides, there's been retconning in every Star Wars movie. Even in the original trilogy. It's perfectly natural, seeing as such a massive universe is so prone to creating plot holes.
Well Roque one retcons parts of a new hope, a movie released 40 years ago. SW is not a perfect universe, it will keep retconning itself till the end of time.
Phasma was so shitty. See, the movies are the main focus in Star Wars, and they introduce and hype this character in the last main movie, and it was completely bullshit. It wasn't unlike the rest of the movie being bullshit, but still. They showed her and it was almost like they were trying to make another Boba Fett type character, hyping them up and never showing them in combat. She could've retaliated as her being a warrior she would've fought back almost instinctively and then Chewy or something KO's her or something, and that would've been awesome. It was just kinda lazy and it was misleading. Hell they seemed to have made the book to damn near answer why she did that without any hesitation.
It is amazing the mental gymnastics people play to justify something that makes no sense. All we had to do was wait 2 years for them to finish a commissioned book to explain a character writers were too lazy to make interesting in a movie. Then speculate wildly about thoughts that character may have had a over 3 years ago in a script written before this retconing novel. The existence of this book just proves how poorly written this character was. Before anyone says, but what about Boba Fett. I agree it was bad writing when they did it with Boba Fett and its bad now.
Well with Boba Fett, he never really did anything or was too important to know his backstory or the WHY. He was simply a bounty hunter who made a bargain with the Empire to capture Han for Jabba, done and done. Phasma betraying her team and compromising the safety of an ENTIRE secretive operation that is their key to reclaiming the galaxy......I agree, that is just dumb and lazy.
I think this is a cool aspect to add to the Star Wars universe. They did it well with Han Solo in the original films and with Diego Luna's character in Rogue One. Again, they are bringing in a more grey morality than the previous binary of the light and dark sides of the Force. I think that's pretty cool and fitting with what we see in humanity every day.
Some of the comments man...you guys have to be spoon fed this badly? You can't persevere enough to see that Phasma clearly isn't loyal to her dying breath. You HAVE to be told why? This is why people say The Force Awakens has more plot holes than there really are...because they can't use their own brains.
Well you say in your comment that people don't realise the obvious. But then you say there isn't anything that points toward that assumption. There's a problem with these statements.
Top Kek let me make myself clear so I don't sound like I'm contradicting myself. Phasma is not a fully realized/fleshed out character in The Force Awakens. We know close to nothing about her. The only thing I do know about her is that she's demanding, she's attentive, and that she...isn't willing to die for the people she works with...and she isn't too keen to the idea of trash compactors...lol THATS ALL I KNOW!!! There's no problem with my statements at all. People EXPECT Phasma to be badass because she looks BADASS! People expect Phasma to be loyal to the death to The First Order because that's expected of anybody working for that regime. But judging by her actions by lowering the shields and saving her own life, she's not entirely willing to lay down her life for the First Order. It's shown on screen clear as day. The issue isn't with the film, it's with people having preconceived notions of a character (without knowing the character) only to be shown something entirely different that didn't match up with what they thought. Hopefully that makes sense.
Yet another occurrence of a SW book explaining something that should've happened in the movie. I love SW, but it's shit like this that just ruins it for me.
It's a shame people who just watch the movies don't get this explanation. But it's cool, it's just like the republic getting bounty hunters to train/oversee the troops
Because it was part of a pathetic, Lore destroying, script. One that had Leia hugging a stranger instead of Chewbacca after Han was killed. TFA is atrocious & the stain of the Saga.
You might want to update this. We learned in the new comic that she went back and doctored the records blaming the lowering of the shields on someone else.
She also stated (in the movie) that lowering the shields would alert her troops to storm the area, so I always took it as her saving her own life in the moment, but then ensuring the encroachers would soon be captured, thus making a brief lowering of the shields negligible in the overall battle. But it just didn't pan-out as she surmised.

You took that joke from a Star Wars meme, didn't you?

Lol. I love how you always use Domhnall Gleeson's (General Hux) dad, Brendan Gleeson's photo for Brendol Hux.
Sam Lee ironically gleeson's dad played alastor "mad eye" moody in the harry potter saga.
Darth Infernus how is that ironic
Because Domnhall also played Bill Weasley, in 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' Parts 1 and 2...
Armitage Hux is made to be much cooler in the books than he was in the movie.
I don't know how people can be a "fan" of Phasma when she had less screen time than the garbage monster on the Death Star
Same goes for Boba Fett, he was only in 5-6, made a cameo in 4 and was a child in 2. He needed the books to expand on his story, people then became fans. Same with Phasma.
Nathan Broderick with that cameo in 4 that wasn't even until a special edition edit!!

Based solely on what we see of him in the movies, I always thought it was weird that Boba Fett was so popular. Guess what people actually liked was his gear, not the character.
If she said no, there would be nothing Han and Fin could do
That very true
Love your vids
Jongo Phett? How's the battlefront?
So is Brendan Gleeson officially Brendal Hux, or is he just used as an image because he's Donhall Gleeson's father?
It's just an image because he's Donhall's dad.
In fact, I actually can see Brendal looking like him.
Cillian Brouder pretty much a example of what he might of looked like
scifiguy9000 yeah, that's what I was thinking. It would be great to see Brendan Gleeson as him in a spinoff movie
Good 'Ol Mad Eyed Moody
Haha yeah, just because he's the elder Gleeson.

TheNinjaDC Looks like Snoke and Ren have nothing to do with Siths.
No they are not Sith (which is refreshing), but they are connected to the dark side, so I'm using previous dark side users as a reference.
Two years later and I'm satisfied with the explanation
While this makes me like Phasma more as a villain, it doesn't exactly make me care more for the First Order
Bill O'Brien I am aware of all that. I just find it bad writing to come up with a faction of fanatics I am probably never going to care about and having said faction be the Empire's replacement
I actually cant see the FO replacing the empire i feel that the FO is just a copy that is trying to reach its potential
David Umstattd The Empire did nothing wrong.
Sgt. Banzi Blowing up an entire planet seems VERY wrong to me.
This is actually a really good explanation
All you said is true, but I am surprised you didn't talk about what the movie novelization says:
She managed a slight shake of her head. “Even a Wookiee can’t crush First Order armor.” In response, Chewbacca tightened his grip further. Her mask emitted a slight but perceptible wheeze.
“Well,” Han said nonchalantly, “there’s one way to find out.”
(i.e. she didn't want her skull crushed!)
-Why Phasma Lowered the Shields on Starkiller Base?
-Because the script was written in twenty minutes.
Because disney
😂😂😂😂😂 to true
GhostShipSupreme Yep 😂
You really believe that?
My guess is that if She kills General Hux before the end of TLJ, Kylo will be pleased and promote her as his permament replacement. JMT.
Euodias Lee jmt?
Grand Moff Tarkin It means just my thoughts.
Euodias Lee k
The Grand Admiral ehh a big moon
The Grand Admiral its big roumd grey and can destroy planets but it has one big hole of 2 metres diametee
Phasma reminds me of Destro from GIJoe an opportunist
If Phasma thinks she has a better chance of surviving that way, she'll do it in a heartbeat.
Jennifer Brewer I know, but I'm wondering whether this character trait of her was planned from the beginning, or they added it later when they realised that Phasma betraying the First Order like that would make no sense otherwise.
Lol would have been cool... but shes DEAD
Josh Litz Gaming her armor deflected a blaster shot, there might be a possibility of her surviving
True, that is, my young apprentice
Whats up with those arows and question marks, man dont go down that path
The clickbait side of thumbnails is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be...unnatural.

I was really confused by the comic but now you've cleared up phasmas nature it makes complete sense.
So basically she's a person who will do anything to keep on breathing.?
Drashigz Yes, random person who reminds me of another random person.
Just signed up to audible using your link. Ordered the Phasma book as my free book. Great story so far! Cheers! 🤘☺🤘
We all know it's because she wanted to experience the trash compactor
LMAO :'D
Nazi zombie Princess Kenny 27. Your name is magnificent
Thanks for clearing this up, It is coming all together now.
I still think that if a movie needs books, comics and other material (aka excuses) for it to make sense, that it's a bad movie...
DANG... now that's wild!! THANK YOU for doing this video... makes a ton of sense and her story in the future more intriguing!
Phasma is basically from Mad Max: The Planet
That actually does clear things up. It's a very reasonable motivation, when you put it like that.
Things like this make me understand why some people dislike TFA.
I personally thought the film was good. Nothing great tho. But Phasma was a complete abomination of a character.
Its JJ's style. Wow you with flashy visuals and sacrifice plot because the target audience is suppose to be too dumb to notice. Same thing happened to Star Trek 2009.
+Darwin Xavier YESS!!!!
So she's literally the opposite of Brienne.
HOLY SHIT YOU'RE RIGHT
She just became even better! Mostly because now we know she's not just "Brienne in a space costume".
- Discarding a character because she was only validated by her story in the books
- Cites a character from Game of Thrones, a series that took it's entire plot from books.
Phasma is a perfectly valid character. Just because she didn't have the best introduction doesn't discard her character. Specially when you're comparing it to a series that has hour-long episodes, and therefore, much more time to invest in a character's backstory, unlike a single movie.
Joshua Fuentes
Which is why this channel exists. Not everyone reads the books and star wars was always more than movies. We would have a very basic understanding of everything without the additional material.
Dake Galcyon she is briennes evil sister
Tormun is Hux? Idk
Love the picture and reference to Makeb to see what damage the mining can do. Well done.
TR8R!
i still love her as a character played in star wars, i just love how she leads the troopers.
Is this the Supremacy on the screen left of the Starkiller Base at 2:27 ?
ViZo ViRuS Holy shit, that looks rather similar! Good eye
Edit : Though looking at it again, not really, it's more of a coincidence really
Yayo' Ariowibowo wtf? What is there to see
Yes but a good coincidence
Delilah is one of the best Star Wars writers. These characters were so well-drawn, and despite the endless bloodbath, nobody was wasted. Can't wait to see if there's a future for Vi, Siv, and Cardinal in canon.
Slushpile I do too. I liked the knitter and the teacher and and I was pleased the "medic" survived. Praise to the Creators.
The Sliver Shellfish or as we all know it by another name The Sliver Selfish.
I bought the Phasma book on Audible yesterday, so hyped! :D
_Mit_Whit _Gaming_ spoiler alert
Luca Baldassi Ya, I stopped the video when it got to that point. ;)
I got the book the other day along with Tarkin and two new copies of the RC books. I went through it in several hours despite work because I kept opening it again to continue. It uses an interesting and familiar method to tell the story.
by the way, who is reading the book and is it abridged?
It's January Lavoy, she's great. And no Audible doesn't really do abridged works.
I'll be putting that book on my wishlist
In essence Phasma can be considered the Star Wars equivalent of Starscream.
Pegas105 except without the boasting. More like Soundwave and Shockwave and Starscream put together.
Pegas105 Agreed.
Pegas105 nah I'm just gonna put Phasma as starsscream....makes it easier to imagine all the death she will get I hope it will be a trash compactor
An awesome theory which really made me see her character differently and in a more interesting way :)
The real answer is crap writing. A book shouldn't be needed to explain what should've been clear in the movie.
Yakov Merkin
I still needed a book to know how the force works, I couldn't find one, still couldn't understand the series although I like it a lot.
Yakov Merkin Indeed
Exhaust Ports.
'Nuff said.
The Senate is here
Sheev Palpatine Not yet.
+ARC Trooper Fives That screech wasn't autistic enough to fit.
I love how you put a picture of Brendan Gleeson for Hux's father. 😂
Henrik Christoffersen as Chris Brown would say "These hoes ain't loyal."
She is totally going to flip or flee from Ep8 to Ep9 when the Resistance takes the upper hand.
I think she'll become a bounty hunter, so she only has to be loyal for herself.
Was hoping to see this one today.
I hope this will all be expanded upon in TLJ, otherwise it is just a cheap retconning to excuse a frail plot.
Edit: Furthermore, I should not need a separate book from the film to explain why I should like a character, much less the movie.
I guess you should completely hate the Prequels then
meloncholy&macabre
Nope.
And that's a plot hole filed
I always thought one of the fun things about series-movies was that something that may seem odd/unexplained in one film will be further explained in a later episode. But nowadays everyone just cries, "Retcon!" when it happens.
I just thought. "OH she's not as loyal to the Order as we/they thought!"
And I'm sure it will be explained in the next movie.
"Retcon!"
Too bad you need to get a book and a comic to explain a plot hole it a not-so-good-overall movie. I liked Rogue one more honestly.
Rogue One was literally a movie that covered up a plot hole in A New Hope. Hope you realise the irony of that.
Zanderfist The Death Star plans were a plot hole?
MAYBE the exhaust port was, but it was set up enough to be believable, in my opinion.
Rogue one is a laughable and boring movie in general. I slept through it. And the one time I didnt, I was disappointed with what I saw.
Another Amazing video!!
what i dont understand is that when rey is escaping, they inform all guards to be on lockdown, and phasma is just strolling on her own. where are her orders and why wasn't she with an escort of grunts? she better put up a fight in the next movie or she'll just be a waste of talent
JamesPlaysGames95 She was the head stormtroopers so can do what she likes. It would be like a military base commander locks down an instalation but leaves the base. He can do it cause he's the head hancho.
+Joe Digger Stupid excuse, Krennic had death troopers with him. Even the damn Emperor had guards. It's just completely stupid writing come on.
AARRGGHHH another Star Wars book to read. I'm never going to catch up at this rate.
Do They write A BOOK for every plot hole?
the ret-conning is strong with this one...
It's better to fill in plot holes then ignore them
Did factory YT-1300 models have turrets? If not, what was in place of the gun seats?
Hun:Lets make a savage a high rank officer in our army.
First order anybody: Sir we have many qualified and military trained personal who has seen both active combat and various tactical training who are loyal to first order.
Hux: I have seen her fight. I believe she is better then a standard stormtroper. Don't question my raisins!
First order anybody: raisins sir?
Hux: yes and I want apple juice and Mr snughlekins
First order anybody: yes sir (then thinks) he is just a spoiled brat
Grievous needs this sort of treatment
Bryan Leong He did, it's called Legends
Richard Howford
I thought he was pretty bad ass in the original clone wars cartoon
Richard Howford I mean in canon
I wish we didn't have to seek out the books and things for a moment like that to make sense but still, it makes some sense. I'm gonna have to find the book too.
I hate all this retconning because JJ Abrams made a crappy script.
Hey, they still haven't been able to fix all George's dumb descisions in Episode 1.
Well Roque one retcons parts of a new hope, a movie released 40 years ago. SW is not a perfect universe, it will keep retconning itself till the end of time.
They should have had her face the consequences of her actions in TLJ
Exia Valens How is this retcon lol?
Lol. Love the Mad Max Fury Road stuff thrown in. WITNESS ME!!!!!!!!!!!
Hell they seemed to have made the book to damn near answer why she did that without any hesitation.
true
You should write a novel, Wait, you already just did
Great vid, man!
Man Phasma is Unpredictable thats whats makes her scary Great Book
so basically she is a coward
Wooooow, this would have been cool to see, you know, in the movie!
Sounds like an excuse for a poorly written rushed script
Tell me one scene indicating that phasma doesnt care about her allies other than the lowering of the shields in the Force awakens
We never actually see her fight and she sends her soldiers out to be reconditioned.
Top Kek Tell me one scene where she does care!? Phasma doesn't have enough screen time to be fleshed out fully! Lol!
Thx for the explanation Alex! 😉😉
So in a way she's General Grevious
Well... yes :D
Very interesting, I will soon buy the book 📚 ...
Yet another occurrence of a SW book explaining something that should've happened in the movie. I love SW, but it's shit like this that just ruins it for me.
How do I use the free book if I already have audible and stuff
Because The Force Awakens has poor writing.
That's a lot of it right there. Though I'm glad authors are trying to fill in those plot holes; makes for more interesting novels for me to read.
Phasma didn't do anything in the movie but she was epic in the novel and comic
"We completely fucked up an over hyped character in our shitty movie, better come up with some tie in bullshit to try and save face!"
+Nick Day haha!
It's a shame people who just watch the movies don't get this explanation. But it's cool, it's just like the republic getting bounty hunters to train/oversee the troops
Mr. J it's cuz they want everything to be answered in one movie. You can't do that unless you want a 4 hour movie
Force Awakens was disappointing
Pixels you're disappointing
Neil Ganti I am petty good thanks how are you
Pixels
TFA is garbage. You don't have to be nice ;)
That's right I said it. The prequels were great and i am not ashamed of that.
+CringeGames101 “Smoshie01” just cause you say it doesn't mean it's true
To me, this makes her a more interesting character. I hope we see this aspect in the movies.
well, still far worse than Jar Jar.
But... but... Jar Jar is my favourite character °.°
he's not that bad, especially in TCW, but phasma is awful.
"especially in TCW"
Did you seriously like that 'Jar Jar gets a girlfriend' subplot?
Genuine Canadian He was actually useful in that arc and mace sparred with mother talzin so yes.
...You're clearly a troll.
I gotta get the Phasma book!
Well this character is even more disappointing now.
so this video just made me like phasma 100x more
such an interesting character
Because it was part of a pathetic, Lore destroying, script. One that had Leia hugging a stranger instead of Chewbacca after Han was killed. TFA is atrocious & the stain of the Saga.
Great job Alex!!! Are you going to do the Easter eggs?
I hate canon
You dont speculate much. Was interesting to hear your take on this based on the book
Next thing you know, if Phasma defects in the films, she hears a very familiar cry of, "TRAITOR!" from Nines.
You might want to update this. We learned in the new comic that she went back and doctored the records blaming the lowering of the shields on someone else.
I hope Phasma turns out to be a rogue type character who would negotiate stuff and ruin plans similar to Rupert Hentzau in The Prisoner of Zenda
Well done
Breanne of Tarth would not be so cowardly!
Yet you heard me. Gwendolyn Christie plays Captain Phasma and Breanne. Two vastly different characters.
