I was disappointed by some of the stuff in the movie (like a fanboy that I am). I took my time to vent. Now I'm at a point where I want to focus on all the positives. Channels like this really help with that. Keep up the good work!
Imo, Raddus death has more meaning then Ackbar final moment, its so sad for a war hero of both clone wars and galactic civil war having offscreen death just like that in TLJ. edited: wait a sec, both also died offscreen lol
Actually we DO see Ackbar die in TLJ. (He can be seen being engulfed by fire behind Leia.) Doesn't change that they could have put some more work in it. I would have been very happy to see Ackbar do the hyperspeed ram.
Apparently, a first order bomber was planned at some point, since they showed up in the concept art. Makingstarwars.com saw artwork of a first order ship that appeared to be a bomber alongside Kylo Ren's ship (which the article described very accurately.)
I was hoping the First Order would be using newer TIE models like the Hunter and Avenger (Standard to the Silencer), to show progression of technology and lessons learned, but it would seem that still isn't the case. The movies are 0-2 when it comes to any assortment of new Starfighters and no the TIE Silencer and Awing II do not count, the former is a personal ship, the latter is an upgrade. Lol not only did they not have ant new Starfighters but they actually *took away* models. Could have given Ren two upgraded TIE bombers in escort with 2 TIE/SFs on his attack on the Raddus, would've been the perfect time.
Probably the coolest thing for me is the use of legs on the Heavy Hauler (and I presume based on the Lego set, the unseen Heavy Scout). They really function more like wheels and are far more stable, but still carry the tradition of legs on vehicles.
Obi-Wan Kenobi - quite nice-looking though I know the sequel trilogy is meant to be this nostalgiafest thing, but I do wish they would be a bit more adventurous in vehicle design, especially since they've proven to me they are capable of great and unique designs like the U-wing.
They're also improved versions of older vehicles. Disney decided to redesign all the older ships to be bigger and better, but I personally would've preferred they just left it at better. If you keep making things bigger than before, you quickly reach a point where things become "too big to be believable."
Remember when hux called back Ren to the fleet after the bombing run on the raddus? Both of his wingmen were shot down. Couldn’t have been x-wings of a-wings they already been destroyed from the bombing run.
I was excited to see the news that A-Wings were coming back into Star Wars as they are my favorite space ship, but upon watching the film, the lack of action on their part was disappointing. I hope they return in Episode IX AND we FINALLY get to see a version of the B-Wing IN COMBAT on the big screen.
Umm...To be fair, The Raddus was fast for it's size, and had one of the best SHIELDING in the Star Wars Universe, which is able to withstand Supremacy's barrage. It maybe undergunned but it's generally a good ship IMO.
I'm surprised that the First Order didn't bring any Dreadnaughts with them to pursue the resistance. The Resistance only knew about them a few hours before the evacuation so they haven't destroyed any before the evac to suggest that the one they took down was the last.

Better than Legends, where they kept on using the same old stuff, with the exception of some that literally WERE just bigger. And while Legends did have a bunch of new letter-winged starfighters, even those feel kinda lazy, like they were designed using pieces of other OT fighters.
I mean the New Republic didn't allow any new advance weapons after the defeat of the Empire so the only had to work on smaller scale weaponry and current models and just improve its design, the First Order were off the Unknown Region and they had to scrounge up tech the Empire had left old projects and prototypes and improve there design, the resistance weren't even allowed to use the current era of weaponry of what the New Republic had so they had to use old tech like for example the T-70 X-wing that Starfighter was a older fighter since the New Republic and that current state before they were wiped out had T-85 X-wings so the resistance only weaponry were old and decommission ships and weapons
I don't know, while it's role is somewhat similar to the executor, design wise I think the supremacy is quite unique while maintaining obvious lineage to previous star Destroyers.

You don't get to call your massive, over-sized bombers the 'star fortress' when it explodes the moment someone explodes JUST OFF THE SIDE OF YOU. And btw, by having this massive, bloated bomber drop the bombs directly downwards you guarantee that you will have MASSIVE losses because you have to be right on top of the enemy ship, instead of sending a volley of propelled bombs towards the target from smaller, more nimble bombers like the TIE Bomber or the old work-horse of the Republic and rebellion, the Y-Wing bomber.
Of course most of the "new" vehicles are BIGGER, BETTER & MORE POWERFUL in order for them to be a bigger threat then before... not to mention that most of them are slightly upgraded rehashes because "creativity".

It always bothers me that everything in the new trilogy era is just iterations on original trilogy stuff (with a few exceptions). More innovation was seen in the 3 or so years of the Clone Wars and then the early days of the Empire than the 30 year gap between the original trilogy and the new trilogy.
Well, it makes sense since the FO was built off the the reminence of the Empire. And the Resistance just scrapped together whatever they could. With the New Republic, much of that was just upgrades to the ships that won them the war against the Empire. Even the prequels ended showing ships that were clearly predecessors to things we saw in the OT. And you should look at our military vehicles in real life. Gen 6 planes just look like more advanced updates to Gen 5 planes.
Military advancements aren't always physically obvious. For instance, the F-22 and F-35 look like a sleeker F-15 and F-18. Most of the advanced tech is all under the hood.
I'll add that the ship stolen from Canto Bight, the Libertine (and the police speeders for that matter) are pretty unlike anything in the PT or OT. They look like something out of the comics, which is cool
Mon calamari ships are too powerful and I mean too powerful. Those ships are the only reason why the rebels and resistance wins battles or survives one.
The AT-HS was confirmed to exist by the visual dictionary, but we currently have no images of it. The closest we have is the lego toy, which makes it appear to be a smaller version of the walkers that were dragging the siege cannon.
Maybe they couldnt find an appropriate role for it in the film? (dont worry spoiler free) but as we know alot of lego kits never apprea in the films so maybe thats the case?
I like the bombers and I love that opening scene, but the bombers are so slow and poorly defended that I don’t see their usefulness, especially when you have so few fighters.

I had no idea how big The Supremacy was. That blows me away. Also favourite ship had to be the Star Fortress bomber. Reminds me so much of the B-17 Flying Fortress.

The "lore" explain can be that at least fighters were able to operate inside the ship shield bubble. But, in more realistic explanation it was just a "movie thing".
The shields in SW operate in different ways depending of movie or book or game. There can be shield close to the hull or the bubble or it "have shield" but it look like there is no shield at all. This depend of what effect you want to get in the movie, dreadnought did not have any shield in the movie. In lore it do have a strong shield but in the movie, nope.
They just follow the role in script. "Fulminatrix" had 6 powerful deflector shields generator, it probably was shielded enough to survive counter battery fire from ground to orbit defense systems. It was heavy armed and protected siege platform. That's the lore. Now, in movie you see Poe "race" to the Fulminatrix, destroying it's CIWS turrets, then bombers that slowly approach the ship and then fly above it like nothing. They did that because movie script said they will do this, "Fulminatrix" was just a spectacular victim to die in the opening. This is the role of "bad guy" in the movie, die in the stupid way against any logic. On the other hand, captain Canady of "Fulminatrix" was one of the most competent commander we saw in SW at all on the bad side. He instantly know what Poe was doing and why, he expected incoming bombers after what Poe did and did criticize Hux for not deploying fighter screen earlier. I must say that I instantly start to like him, finally a competent starship captain of bad side that don't look like arrogant and total moron. And then they kill him...
I really like the new Resistance bombers. It's no secret that Star Wars fighters are based on WWII era planes, but up until now all the bomber craft we've seen have been more a kin to dive bombers (fast, single pilot craft that can just at most a couple bombs per run). It's cool to see a Star Wars ship that more like an actual bomber (slow, tough, multi-man ships that can drop a huge amount of ordnance in one run).
Doesn't TLJ kinda contradict TFA due to the fact that the last half of TFA consisted of Starkiller Base re-charging when they could've just sent a dreadnought ship to D'qar and destroyed them using their orbital cannons? Just wondering if there are any references as to why
Looks like Resistance Bombers are basically this universe's B-17: it's a lot cooler in concept than in practice since for all its firepower, it's a sitting duck.
Megacaliber is a turbolaser? I was always thinking that it would be some high powered mass driver, something of a slugthrower's equivialant to turbolasers.
Supremacy is definitely my fav, the thing can churn out Resurgents! I don't know why, but I actually really like the Vigil, maybe because it's long, and those little gas/liquid tanks :D

Really disappointed they haven't given the Resistance any new Wing ships. All the designs are so uninspired. I mean, the Resistance Transport is basically just a flying rectangle.
Why? Why should they be weaker? Like really, why? What's the point? The restatnce bombers was an utterly stupid idea - starting from the way they travel very close to each other (even WW2 bomber pilots knew this is a bad idea) and finishing the way they "drop" bombs. In space.
I would just like to state unequivocally that while many Nebulon-B frigates found themselves serving in Rebel fleets during the Galactic Civil War, it was originally designed for the Imperial Navy being primarily manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards, which was controlled by the Empire at that time.

The only reason I like the tie silencer is that you can actually look up and out of the cockpit. That visibility increase represents an actual itteration of the Tie design.
I think we should have seen a battle between the resistance fleet and smokes ships and other star destroyers, because it would be cool to see mom calamari’s amazing shielding up against the first orders amazing fire power
Who says you can't weaponize lightspeed? In any case, in ANH Han says without precise calculations they could "fly right through a star..." and be killed. Seems to me you could intentionally calculate a lightspeed jump to go right through a ship and destroy it and yourself.
With that many people aboard the Supremacy and it's attendant Star Destroyers, the 'good guys' continue to rack up quite the body count. It'd be interesting if we could work out a running total of all the deaths the various factions have caused across all the films
I loved those new RZ-2 A-Wings. But I'm still waiting to see T-80 X-Wings (I'm hoping they use the Ralph McQuarrie/Joe Johnston X-Wing more closely, since the T-75 looks so similar). Also still waiting to see B-Wing MK II
The AT-M6 was the best looking thing in the film with the Tie Silencer and Alliance bomber coming in behind that. The Dreadnought looked like a giant slice of pizza, would have been nice for a whole new design that didn't take the look of a Star Destroyer. The Supremacy was ok, but didn't really impress me much.

I mean the New Republic didn't allow any new advance weapons after the defeat of the Empire so the only had to work on smaller scale weaponry and current models and just improve its design, the First Order were off the Unknown Region and they had to scrounge up tech the Empire had left old projects and prototypes and improve there design, the resistance weren't even allowed to use the current era of weaponry of what the New Republic had so they had to use old tech like for example the T-70 X-wing that Starfighter was a older fighter since the New Republic and that current state before they were wiped out had T-85 X-wings so the resistance only weaponry were old and decommission ships and weapons

It always bothers me that everything in the new trilogy era is just iterations on original trilogy stuff (with a few exceptions). More innovation was seen in the 3 or so years of the Clone Wars and then the early days of the Empire than the 30 year gap between the original trilogy and the new trilogy.
30 years of peace. It make a difference. Beside, the Resistance use old tech, not the brand new fighters.
Well, it makes sense since the FO was built off the the reminence of the Empire. And the Resistance just scrapped together whatever they could. With the New Republic, much of that was just upgrades to the ships that won them the war against the Empire.
Even the prequels ended showing ships that were clearly predecessors to things we saw in the OT.
And you should look at our military vehicles in real life. Gen 6 planes just look like more advanced updates to Gen 5 planes.
When there are nearly 30 years of complete peace there just isn't a need for a lot of military advancements.
Military advancements aren't always physically obvious. For instance, the F-22 and F-35 look like a sleeker F-15 and F-18. Most of the advanced tech is all under the hood.
I'll add that the ship stolen from Canto Bight, the Libertine (and the police speeders for that matter) are pretty unlike anything in the PT or OT. They look like something out of the comics, which is cool

The AT-HS was confirmed to exist by the visual dictionary, but we currently have no images of it. The closest we have is the lego toy, which makes it appear to be a smaller version of the walkers that were dragging the siege cannon.
Maybe they couldnt find an appropriate role for it in the film? (dont worry spoiler free) but as we know alot of lego kits never apprea in the films so maybe thats the case?
I like the bombers and I love that opening scene, but the bombers are so slow and poorly defended that I don’t see their usefulness, especially when you have so few fighters.

But Y-Wings would've never made it past one run. Their bombs are inefficient enough to properly destroy the Dreadnaught before it could target the Raddus. The X-Wing escort were already having a hard enough time keeping the Bombers safe due to how much TIE fighters there were.
Plus, the ships got destroyed in the end and only one managed to drop its payload before getting destroyed. I don't think you even know what Plot Armor even means.

The "lore" explain can be that at least fighters were able to operate inside the ship shield bubble. But, in more realistic explanation it was just a "movie thing".

The shields in SW operate in different ways depending of movie or book or game. There can be shield close to the hull or the bubble or it "have shield" but it look like there is no shield at all. This depend of what effect you want to get in the movie, dreadnought did not have any shield in the movie. In lore it do have a strong shield but in the movie, nope.

They just follow the role in script. "Fulminatrix" had 6 powerful deflector shields generator, it probably was shielded enough to survive counter battery fire from ground to orbit defense systems. It was heavy armed and protected siege platform. That's the lore. Now, in movie you see Poe "race" to the Fulminatrix, destroying it's CIWS turrets, then bombers that slowly approach the ship and then fly above it like nothing. They did that because movie script said they will do this, "Fulminatrix" was just a spectacular victim to die in the opening. This is the role of "bad guy" in the movie, die in the stupid way against any logic.
On the other hand, captain Canady of "Fulminatrix" was one of the most competent commander we saw in SW at all on the bad side. He instantly know what Poe was doing and why, he expected incoming bombers after what Poe did and did criticize Hux for not deploying fighter screen earlier. I must say that I instantly start to like him, finally a competent starship captain of bad side that don't look like arrogant and total moron. And then they kill him...
I really like the new Resistance bombers. It's no secret that Star Wars fighters are based on WWII era planes, but up until now all the bomber craft we've seen have been more a kin to dive bombers (fast, single pilot craft that can just at most a couple bombs per run). It's cool to see a Star Wars ship that more like an actual bomber (slow, tough, multi-man ships that can drop a huge amount of ordnance in one run).

The Raddus did have good weapons, it's just that if it used them in the movie it would weaken the aft shields and leave that area open to attack

The restatnce bombers was an utterly stupid idea - starting from the way they travel very close to each other (even WW2 bomber pilots knew this is a bad idea) and finishing the way they "drop" bombs. In space.
The other problem is that rebels will normaly use hit and run attacks. The slow bombers just don't fit in with those tactics.

I would just like to state unequivocally that while many Nebulon-B frigates found themselves serving in Rebel fleets during the Galactic Civil War, it was originally designed for the Imperial Navy being primarily manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards, which was controlled by the Empire at that time.

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the TIE Silencer is the successor to the TIE Avenger, which is a mix of the TIE Interceptor and TIE Advanced.

I loved those new RZ-2 A-Wings. But I'm still waiting to see T-80 X-Wings (I'm hoping they use the Ralph McQuarrie/Joe Johnston X-Wing more closely, since the T-75 looks so similar). Also still waiting to see B-Wing MK II
The Ninka looks pretty dang similar to the battlecruiser from Starcraft.
The AT-M6 was the best looking thing in the film with the Tie Silencer and Alliance bomber coming in behind that. The Dreadnought looked like a giant slice of pizza, would have been nice for a whole new design that didn't take the look of a Star Destroyer. The Supremacy was ok, but didn't really impress me much.
My favourite new vehicle is the raddest the mc85 star Cruiser who is my favourite Star Cruiser in Star Wars episode VIII the last Jedi
