- Following the New York premiere of Joker at the 57th New York Film Festival, Todd Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix, producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff, production designer Mark Friedberg, and cinematographer Lawrence Sher participated in an conversation on the making of the film. They discussed vividly bringing to life a reimagined Gotham City, their cinematic influences, Phoenix’s preparation for the role, and the importance of real-world implications of violence in the film.

The Joker began life on April 25, 1940 as the anarchic enemy of DC Comics’ Batman, and his appearance was possibly inspired by Conrad Veidt’s permanently, demonically smiling face from the 1928 silent film The Man Who Laughs. The Joker has gone through many transformations and iterations, but his origin story has never been as vividly or shockingly imagined and realized as it is here, in one of the most anticipated films of the year. He might still be in character.... trying to care about fake awards were give him. I think playing this character puts a mental toll on you.
@@austinlaske6462 he said on his sisters podcast that he did not do method acting for the role like heath ledger did (spent months alone in hotels reading serial killer prison transcripts etc, where as juaquin said he would not remain in character when off screen). but did say the weight loss for the role caused him alot of stress and a possible eating disorder for a short time.
it's a tricky technique, to make people want to see his movies more.

"Great films spark conversations" I couldn't agree more. This movie was genre bending, and does what so many have wanted. Batman "got real" with Batman Begins. Yet, it was clearly well within the superhero genre. Joker was not at all a comic-superhero film. It was a dark, realist movie! more reminiscent of Memento, Machinist. It's juxtaposition with comic material may have confused some, but it doesn't take away, only adds to the movie's interest, and I would argue, adds to one of the movies virtues: It makes us think about mental illness, fantasy, the liminalized, the have-nots, the neuro-atypicals. It also makes us think about the combination of guns and mental illness, mass hysteria, catharsis, and societal inequality. It is, I believe a refreshing and long needed film. It made me take a look at cinema again, which I have been bored with for years.

Half the time, Joaquin was staring at nothing in particular.
It's gotta be a bit frustrating to answer the same question all the time. I can only imagine doing press like these guys do. If I had the privilege to interview him or Joaquin, I would try to come up with different questions that still revolve around the film.
Frustrating, yes. But it's part of the job. And those questions are asked with people in mind who don't watch a bunch of interviews with the cast and team, just this particular interview. So, to many viewers, asking more unusual questions while skipping some simpler ones would seem strange and even more unprofessional, I guess.
People want to know answers to bold questions that few interviewers ask. They want an “I didn’t know that!” And these banal questions bore all.
We’ve not even seen him in his final state. That was only the beginning. Very powerful acting. It felt so authentic, so real. Amazing performance by Joaquin Phoenix.
There will be a sequel. It will be titled - Joker : Clown Prince of Crime.

Goddamn that bit from Todd about making a film where the violence has weight and implications was so spot on. I love the movie and partly for that exact reason. It’s important and it’s not something we see a lot in cinema today.
The film left me speechless. Joaquin Phoenix was stunningly exceptional (blown away) - another level of acting entirely, total genius he was in Joker. WOW. I love his work in films generally etc but in this - it was something else. Joker depicted so many individual themes worthy of examination in their own right etc., such as to name a few, his 'laugh' in the film which was so out of kilter with the rest of the 'world' so to speak - that spoke to me and tells you about him so much. Very clever. His very brilliance is being overlooked throughout until the very end.. but it was not lost on me! How haunting and dark at its core it is and so deep. It is this cleverness, intelligence, shrewdness running through it all that shocks and surprises you all at once. The brutality of 'men in suits' and people who so called look respectable, who are not, how that's hidden (hidden joke), in truth and he exposes that. His relationship with his mother and finding out his history and needing access to this and the lengths he went to, to get it imply the 'battle' he has gone through. His dream of appearing on the Murray 'talk show' and at the end when although he was introduced as 'Joker' he was actually his 'true self' which was so powerful and anything but a 'joke'...very far from it. He is in his power for sure and he's turning the show around, he makes it known very differently... .Joker was so profound, shocking, captivating and shows what he is capable of. It's dark yes, but he shows who the real joke is on does he not - put on your happy face (indeed). The dancing he does is a outward reflection of his inner genius to me, that he is allowing us to witness, expressed ever so, ever so creatively, exquisitely, glimpsing his true genius within, yet it's very subtle, distinct and brilliant what he allows us to see. It really set's the tone, speaks loads about him. The truth of him is how powerful he really is on his own.. Absolutely loved it - First Class 5 Stars

Just now saw Joker (Ramstein Air Base, Germany) and I was very impressed with what they did with the story, and then Joaquin's performance was incredible.
How is Ramstein holding up? Grew up in Kaiserslautern in the mid to late 90s.

Messy The more I saw that film the more I took away from it and it kept getting lighter and the intentional humor spots that I didn't notice at first were really funny and left uplifted not a bit sad as with the first viewing, if you can, see it again. Maybe you have already.
I believe that we bring our own life experiences to this movie, with that being said, we all see it in a different way. I felt deep empathy that bought me to tears, watching Arthur struggle with his illness and seeing the abuse he endured. It was brillant. The DC Joker had a story to tell us about society and how we treat those on the fringes.
After seeing Mr. Phoenix play Commodus in Gladiator, this was one actor who brought it. If he doesn’t get the award for best actor, what a crime this would be. Phoenix is pure and uncut, and passionate about his craft, definitely a intensely memorable performance🤡

Cringe when interviewers ask an artist how he does his craft. He can't always put it into words so easily. It's intuitive. He just does it.
To be fair, for a normal person who doesn't do any kind of creative work, it is an unknown concept and it seems mysterious and interesting so of course they want to know.
It's not their fault that most of the time artists have no coherent answer to that question.

I've always thought of Joaquin as strange so I wasn't surprised that he was considered for this strange character roll. He didn't win for gladiator but this one he'll win.

Joaquin Phoenix has been doing his greatest most unique work in recent years. You Were Never Really Here. Inherent Vice. The Master. And now Joker, deservedly, commands attention and forces it's place next to those performances if not beyond them.

What I took away from this movie is that this version of joker is the deepest and most human way to really look at the man and not the surface. Remind me that we should be paying attention to the poor, the sick, the unloved, the desperation that surrounds us every day..

This movie is about society, politics, the ongoing war we have with people who committ certain types of crimes... ANY young adut (16+) NOT should, but NEEDS to see this movie.... The message, the symbolic nature, and the themes it pulls are so pure and raw.... it's eerie. Oh yeah and you get to see a biopic of the Joker and how he got to become.... MASTERPIECE. Safe to say it has a definitive lock in on the "Best Actor In A Leading Role" category as well as "Best Picture". Those are the two, 100% nominations this pheneomenal cinematic educator and adventure have.... would not be surprised to see it grab the "Big 5" and more.

If you're like me and see Marvel/Comicbook movies as generic action movies that are neither good or bad then don't even think about the universe Joker comes from.
Deadpool broke the mold of comic book movies for the better but its still a CB movie... This is completely different.
