At the end of the day, i think Thailand is number 1. 2500 cad as monthly income will be comfortable

It's on my list to check out as I hear a lot of positive about Thailand. A lot of Canadians retire there and like you said the cost savings is huge.

@@thewealthmarathon Your Canadian dollar goes a long way here. Stable country, excellent healthcare and 1cad =about 26 bath.
My rent here in Surat Thani at a luxury condo including electricity and water is 420 cad. Food is relatively inexpensive and world renowned. 3 star Micheline street food.
Now back home in Canada you might be able to rent a single room for that. Affordable housing is key. Its not the one time expenses that get you, it's always the re occurring ones that add up. And rent is a big the biggest of them all.

As a Canadian, I plan to retire in South East Asia (Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, or the Philippines) where you can live like a king for less than $1500 a month.

Those places for sure have a much lower cost of living compared to Canada. Your Canadian dollar would for sure go much further compared to Canada.

Yes, but there is a minimum entry cost as a retiree, at least 15k canadian cash as a deposit in some of those countries. You can take it back only if you renounce the citizenship allowed and leave.

@@tanz5389 Good information on the initial cost. Moving to a new country has an upfront cost before you even arrive, so very good point to bring up.

Mexico has changed their rules, The minimum required is not for someone at the low end of income anymore. Also Ecuador is based on the US dollar. so canadians will loose nearly 30% of the value with the canadian dollar.

I find a lot of Central/ South America seems to tie a lot of US dollar, which for Canadians for sure can reduce the purchasing power depending where it is compared to US.

@@thewealthmarathon thats a red flag for me when their dollar is based on the Yankee green Back.
The US Dollar is loosing it's value by the minute. Totally in debt and the dollar is not based on Gold reserves, its based 9n debt and they have way too much of it. Almost at a trillion dollars annually just on their interests payment on their debt alone. Not GOOD

Let me add my 5 cents after living in the Caribbean for 7 years. And traveling often to Europe and South America
No way Caribbean its not the Bob Marley One Love dream and most people leave that go there for many reasons. Latin America is dangerous unless your in gated areas including cities. Portugal was a great place and still is but the Americans have discovered it and prices are up a lot. Mexico in places is good, but Cartel influence is EVERYWHERE. Safety is a concern so I would consider that. Eastern Europe is wonderful, not expensive beautiful and the people are great. Western Europe is flooded with migrants and crime in cities is up significantly. Inflation has created despair as you see in UK France and Germany. South America is a good choice its far less expansive and is so large and diverse. I would avoid Colombia as the new left Govt has brought crime back unintentionally. Southern Brazil is great, Argentina has so much potential and rivals any country in the world for beauty. It just has a bad govt and always has. Chile should be examined as it is powerful economy and limited population plus its on the Pacific

Thanks for the detailed comment. I'm sure it will help out others. The Portugal comment is true. It seems this is always the case with everything. Once people discover a great place then it loses what made it great as more people move in. I hear a lot of locals are now feeling life isn't the same and the cost of living is increasing. It seems to be the gift and curse of these places and the challenge is how do you keep a good thing going while maximizing how many people can benefit from it. But it looks like a limit is needed at some point to retain quality.

My plan is to retire in a small town on the east coast of Canada and then just take winter vacations to warm places. That way I can pick a different place to visit each winter and I’m not living there in their sweltering summer heat. 🥵
