    Love that drive, and it's perfect for a day trip from either side. I wouldn't bother taking the caravan through there unless absolutely essential. Much better doing the loop and using the Lewis and Haast to cross over.
    Gotta make the most of those perfect weather days to get out for new adventures.
    The shelter in town is partly there to support stranded moterists and hikers when the passes are closed due to weather / snow. Also an area to camp at.

      Yes I think I much prefer the loop arrived in Haast today, but headed for Jackson bay before the next lot of bad weather. Getting stuck up the top would make for an interesting adventure in itself, lucky it's a massive indoor lodge up there to bunker down in. Hope you guys are well.

    thanks for sharing. I had school holidays at Arthurs Pass 60 plus odd yrs ago. Nowdays I live in Northern NSW, and it was melancholic if you know what I mean, and bought back very happy memories when I saw this.. I really enjoy all your posts, lots of places I visited years ago.. thank again for the memories.

    We took our camper over from the Christchurch side, brilliant blue sky up until Castle Hill rocks, by the time we got to Arthurs pass village the rain was smashing down, missed the walk to the punch bowl so enjoyed your video - will have to make another trip. Hills were steep but we took our time & kept the speed and brakes under control. The viaduct was spectacular!

      Thanks, yea I reckon we'd probably be alright. Luckily for me, want to head South any way, so it's not a problem. But those roads are gnarly steep.

    My father had story from when it was single lane and gravel in 60s, with no towing sign. Dad caught in traffic jam because some idiot in caravan got stuck on steep section. After local maintenance bulldozer gave him a push from behind, caravan was couple feet shorter.
    Thanks for great video.

    • @leopardsgowild
      @leopardsgowild  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, likely we'd be ok, going up with the caravan, We'd likely be faster than the truck we were behind, but you got a long steep downhill into porters as well... I'm much happier doing it this way, no point adding unneeded stress... What a great place though.

    Anyone into trains, planes and stuff, Otira is a must visit as its one of the few places in the world that you will see six locomotives on full power pulling a coal train up to the tunnel 🤤🥳🚀🧨

      The fact you said ‘six’ locomotives means that, after a rule chance, they not at full power. Notch six as opposed to the five loco lash-ups that used all eight notches. 👍
      There’s a great TH-cam video called ‘otira to Arthurs Pass’, by Marty Melville, that shows this well. 👍
