also love that he can play so intensely without upping the overall volume hugely. True jazz chops.

He is a maser at what he is doing. Saw him and Emmet live a couple weeks ago and their trio is just insane. So worthy

I just realized that Kyle switches between the traditional grip and the match grip. How does he choose which and when and why? Would be nice to know.

Tony Williams once said he likes to switch to match grip to get more power. I think it’s just a strange habit for a lot of drummers as well, myself included

@@georgewashington2491 Thanks for that. So, it's not an unusual practice, then? I just haven't been paying attention. (I'm a guitarist, who took just enough drum lessons to be dangerous, but not at all effective, so...) But, since you're a drummer, I have another question. Kyle does a pretty fair job of "playing the tune". I can hear "Cherokee". Why is it so hard to find drummers who can do this? Generally, when a drummer solos, what you usually get is every freakin' rudiment they ever learned, including all the variations - but you rarely get a drummer who plays the tune so that it's recognizable without a melody. I've played with only three drummers who played the tune. One was a Paiste rep. He and the other two are so busy, they're not available anymore. Is playing the tune just not at "thing" with drummers?

@@georgewashington2491 At least you understand what I'm referring to. Thanks for that.

@@brandex2011 Thanks, what I can say is that while I agree that rudiments and typical chops do seem to be more of a priority for most drummers now, there are still plenty where it can be easy to hear the melody. An extreme example of that would be someone like Ari Hoenig. I think part of the reason we can here the melody in Kyle’s playing is that he is choosing to quote it in various ways. A lot of drummers don’t prioritize that anymore. I think that most drummers are simply less interested in melodic playing now, so a great deal of famous jazz drummers who might sound like they are playing nothing but rudiments and varied rudiments, could also know how to quote a melody, but see this as less interesting. Someone like Marcus Gilmore or Eric Harland keep the melody in mind but what they are playing is very abstract and complex. Kyle and the Emmett Cohen trio generally play music that tends to honor the tradition of jazz in a very clear and spelt out fashion, similar to Jazz at Lincoln center in some ways but about ten times more fun in my opinion. It’s easier to hear the melody in this solo because of the style it is in. In terms of non famous and less experienced jazz drummers, we might focus on chops because we think it is the key to great solos because we don’t have the understanding that someone like Marcus Gilmore actually does care about the melody. This is all just my opinion but I think it may be true. Thank you if you read all of this.

he's good but his technique is kinda weird and looks very stiff because he positions the drums very unergonomically, like 2 inches below waist level, idk why. Great solo though.
