Thank you for addressing high porosity hair issues. It seems like most people address low porosity more frequently. I would love to have normal porosity, but, if not, I would prefer low over high porosity. I would use heat to lift the cuticle, get that moisture/product in there, then my cuticles would seal that in. My high porosity hair is ALWAYS dry!!😭. Needless to say, it’s difficult to get any length because of this. I envy the shine that low porosity hair can achieve due to the flat cuticles. There is nothing we can do to change this. I don’t use any heat or color. I do protein 2-3x/month. I’m lucky if I get one day of moisture retention. The crispiness returns immediately 🤦🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
I’ve actually gone back to using products with water soluble silicones. I have bleached hair & they help SO much with helping to lock the moisture in between my weekly shampoos. And I shampoo thoroughly, so they wash out. My hair is doing so much better…. Silicones have been so demonized, but they’re doing great for me now - I’m sticking with what works for me personally, because as you said, this isn’t a situation that gets talked about often. 😊
Yes! That cup test was useless, to say the least It is hard to determine your porosity on so many levels. I have tried so many various tests, to no avail. When I shampoo my hair, my hair wets quickly. When I get out of the shower, my hair feels very hydrated; however, after applying my stylers and drying under the hooded dryer, it becomes frizzy and dehydrated rather quickly. It may have something to do with either the products or my technique, although I am pretty good at my technique (Wash and Gos and Twist Outs). However, based on your analogy, I may lean more towards high porosity, especially since my hair loves protein treatments. GOOD TO KNOW! Thank you Sess.
Thank you so very much for this explanation. I have low porosity and hsve struggled for almost 10 years. I at some point had to texlax and I lost all my waist length hair. Thankfully my hair grows really fast so I regained. I kept using heat and my hair started to damage but I am reverting to no heat and better hydration and this video has really helped.
This is the best explanation I’ve ever heard. I think I have normal porosity because my hair takes in water easily when I wet it, but also dries at a decent rate. I’ve been lazy this year just washing my hair weekly and putting into a braid while wet. I feel like that could be damaging now. I don’t dry my hair often, so how do I know if my current styling is causing problems? I do get single strand knots, but not many splits as I trim every 6 months and dust when needed.
@@FlourishCurls_Salon Thank you. I had noticed some straighter pieces last time I washed, but overall, elasticity still seems good. I’ll try a protein treatment and start drying my hair a bit. Thank you!
I’m from Australia, I’m an indigenous woman with long curly hair and I’ve been on my naturally curly hair journey for over 10 years. I struggle to understand porosity and you explained it so well. My hair is constantly tangles when I leave it out and it hard to brush/comb out. It does get dry often especially when I layer on products. Do you have any tips
My hair is high porosity around the front perimeter (bang and temple area down to the ears). It will shrink up the most compared to the rest of my hair when wet but when stretched it’s long. I would definitely call it coarser as the strands are thicker and a different texture. I find that extra moisturization is very important or that section snaps easily. The rest is normal porosity for the most part. The nape is very silky and can flourish with just water but that front perimeter is dry and needs extra love! It’s almost like the front part is my “kitchen” area that most experience in the back/nape area 😂😂
This is good to know, but now I need to know what to do with this information. My hair is completely grey, but I use Bigen to color it and it gets pretty frizzy. It didn’t used to get frizzy at all when I used the ORIGINAL Deva Curl products. But since they had all those lawsuits and changed their formulas, their products don’t work for me anymore. I use Shea Moisture now and it looks beautiful, but frizzes up pretty quickly. So I’m guessing I have a lot of porosity. Now I need to know what to do about the frizz. I live in a very humid climate, especially in the morning. I’m looking forward to you doing some more videos on this subject. I wish I could go to your salon, but I’m on the east coast.
Thank you for educating us! I was wondering when you use steam does it have the same effect of swelling the cuticle? Some people say it's further damaging/unnecessary for low porosity, I was just curious.
Well, then, I don’t know what I have because I thought after the cup test, I had high porosity but products just sit on top of my hair. They don’t absorb well. They leave residue because they sit on top of the hair and don’t absorb into the hair strand. So I have no idea. It sounds like I have properties of both.
This was a great video, my hair is natural and salt & pepper, it gets wet easily and doesn't take long to dry but the style always comes out frizzy with some definition and the moisture doesn't last so I'm not sure if it's low porosity or high. Everyone is saying that grey hair is highly porous even if it's never been color or chemically treated. Had it tested in March '2023 and it was Average porosity so I now I'm not sure.

Are there instances where hair grows out of the scalp in a porous state due to scalp health/condition? The hair on the top of my head is very porous, and I was told by a trichologist that I have an extremely dry scalp in just that area. My hair seems to be growing out from the root porous, but it’s just on the top of my head. Almond oil helps my scalp, but it doesn’t seem to approve the hair’s condition. So frustrating 😩
Thank you! I had my hair in braids for 3 months and it was white once water touched it. And it feels sticky when washing out shampoo. Idk what im doing wrong. Like glue is keeping my hair together. I dont feel this with conditioner. Is it a shampoo thing? Ughh
Ove had permed hair since 7th grade. By 8th grade my should length hair was curling around my ears.mixed heritage granny and mama and they couldn't deal with my hair. Cut it off twice. Doing good so far but not good enough lol.😂🎉

My question is: How can I change my Porosity? I travel for work , so I have to take good care of my natural hair. As a matter of fact I love washing my hair, its fun to me..... Can you tell me How can I change my porosity ? I have color in my hair, but its growing out. I have high Porosity hair , I believe.. I pay attention to my ends and slightly trim when necessary. I'm going to one day come to your salon but in the mean time. please advise .. when I spray my hair with water. while Im styling my hair the hair becomes dry. I have to continue to spray to keep it moisterized. until Im done. Please advise how can I change my porosity to normal porosity hair? Can you advise me during my travels to maintain until we meet ....Please advise until I come to your salon. I appreciate you. thank you , God bless you and your team!
I’m not a professional by any means, and I know that your question was directed to Sess, but I do know that you cannot change high porosity. I would have done it years ago if it were possible. 😩Low porosity can change a little bit, if the hair is colored, or chemically treated, but the hair that comes from the scalp will still be what it is until it’s chemically altered
Fantastic video!!!

Check your curl elasticity while it's wet! And see if you see good definition even without product on freshly washed hair

Anyone with low porosity have any product recommendations? I've been really considering a heat cap and this confirmed it
I have high porosity hair. Is it wise for me to get color if I wanted to?
I have known I had low porosity for years, but it seems to be high porosity since I’ve moved to a city with hard water. Is that possible?

It was the film from the braids that can be a little sticky. Use a clarifying shampoo!!
My hair porosity changed when i texlaxed..😢
Does it mean low porosity hair doesn't break easily? Which porosity breaks easily?
Correct!!
High porosity breaks easier
