- Review of the Rain Harvesting brand Leaf Beater, which stops leaves and sticks from entering your rainwater tank, and the First Flush Diverter, which stops fine contaminants from entering your rain water tank.

On the first flush system, make the fill connection to the storage tank with a wye fitting rather than a tee.
I found that larger, heavier debris may not make it off the roof right away in a light rain, only to be rinsed down after the first flush pipe is full. This makes it a straight path to the storage tank.
By using a wye fitting, the debris has to travel up hill for a short distance, where if it's heavier than water it drops back down into the first flush leg
Having the ball valve defeats the purpose of the wye fitting -- once the ball valve starts diverting substantially all of the water flow to the tank, anything that didn't get settled out in the "first flush" will be sent to the holding tanks regardless, and anything that made it into but didn't quite settle in the diverter pipe will be blocked by the ball from getting flushed out and into the holding tanks.

what is the ball valve doing?
The ball valve seals the dirty water off from the clean water once the diverter chamber is full. During a rain storm, the dirty water will have solids in suspension and you want to avoid these getting in to your tank. Heavier particles will sink, but with the rain pouring in to the diverter pipe, these may still be floating.
Why do you need the float ball?? Once the pipe has filled the extra water will flow into the tank.
Not sure. I see your point. It might work in conjunction with the drain valve to ensure water is flowing at all times once the pipe is full our nearly full.
@@muckleman Well when the first flush pipe is full, water will then run into the water tank. The water will be diverted into the tank with or without a float ball once the first flush pipe is full. I guess the float ball isolates the dirty water in the first flush pipe and stops the dirty water entering the tank.
Plus i think it might be better to empty the first flush pipe by removing the cap. That way larger items which may not go through the bottom hole will flow out.
Thanks Neil. The ball valve prevents dirty, diverted water from entering your tank. During a rain event, this water is dirty as the particles have not yet settled. Therefore the ball separates the dirty water from the clean water.
@@AustralianPaddock I get that but the water would be diverted with or without the ball once the pipe is full. I guess some of the dirty water may enter the tank without the float ball.
But another reason could be the dirty water has nutrients in it. Bacteria will feed on the nutrients. Without the float ball some of the bacteria will enter into the drinking water. It would also be very smelly water after a while and start to smell like rotten egg gas. Some of this smell would go into the drinking water. The float ball isolates the bacteria containing dirty water from the clean drinking water.
@@Neil-yg5gm The small hole at the bottom is so that the diverted water never stays long enough for Bacteria to grow. The reason you have the ball value is to stop dirt that is floating on top of the diverted water getting to the Clean side and then into the tank.

Leaking ever so slowly? Put a 1 litre container under the 'dripper' then publish just how much water 'leaks' every hour! Don't expect less than 10 litres per hour.
