I know your surgery was 5 years ago now but I just had rotator cuff surgery 11 weeks ago and your videos are VERY helpful. We seem to be progressing similarly so it’s good to know I’m on track and the encouragement you offer is welcoming. Thank you for doing these videos!
Hi, not sure if you will see this....BUT, I am approaching surgery for much of the same. I can't tell you how much your videos are helping me prepare for surgery and what to expect! I too am an independent person and your frank conversations are a lifesaver!! Thank you and I'm so happy that you have recovered!!
I had a massive rotator cuff repair 5 weeks ago and have suffered no pain what so ever. Driving after three weeks. I know we are all different and will not be the same for all. Im 75 and really just wanted to encourage anyone waiting for this procedure not to worry.
Hi there! I am comforted to know someone else is experiencing low pain. The first 3 days were bad, especially the next day when the nerve blocker wore off. I only just started to do my exercises on day 4, which were easy to do, but the painful throbbing came back. Then here on day 8, the exercises are still easy and the pain minimal, which made me think today that there must be something wrong with me. Am I taking too much oxy (5mg 4xday) or doing the exercises wrong? One exercise said "this will be difficult at first", when it wasn't hard at all. I'm interested in your thoughts. Thank you.
Thank you, Donna for sharing your recovery experience. I watched several of your videos before surgery and it helped me prepare. Now at 5 weeks post-op I'm watching again and am encouraged; not so alone feeling. It really is a tough recovery.
Hi Donna - yes this video was 7 years ago, but you're still helping so many people. I'm at 12 weeks tomorrow, and whilst I do not have the same range of movement as you, I'm getting great support and I'm not feeling alone in this journey. I've just started the pulleys this week and I'm encouraged as the shoulder is already starting to feel better. Sleeping is not too bad for me, but I do get 'twinges' occasionally, and I still try to be careful everywhere I go. Thanks for your videos.
I was so gratified to see your actual experience through the various stages of rotator cuff surgery. While there is information on the internet about the surgery it was difficult to really know what to expect before and after the surgery. I was so apprehensive before the surgery from what others had told me. Then I found your video of your post surgery experience. It quelled my fears and I feel I was more prepared for the aftermath after watching your video. It was such a godsend! Yours is perhaps one of the few real life documentation of what the experience is like with the perspective of a real person, not from a doctor's point of view or from a medical website. I typically don't comment publicly, but I had to thank you for helping me through the various stages of this process. Your progress has given me the inspiration I needed!
Debbie, thank you so much for your comment. It is comments like yours that make me so glad that I made the videos! I felt the same way as you and that is what prompted me to make them.
I had my surgery 8 weeks ago and am feeling a little better each day. You are right about having pain in the forearm, bicep and triceps. I am using a lacrosse ball to roll out the knots that have formed in my lower arm. This really helps and is releasing that discomfort. Donna your videos are the best on you tube. Thanks for putting in the time making these videos.
This one was SO encouraging to see/hear!! :-) Being at the 5 week point, and 6 PT visits into therapy, seeing where you are at 12 weeks is awesome! Thanks again! 🙂
Hey Donna yes people are still benefiting from your videos!! I am 12 weeks out, I can say I am very grateful for your videos. There is a special place in the universe for you a bright shinning star :) I gained great comfort from following your videos. Blessings to you!!!! Thanks my friend:)
Thanks for sharing your recovery experience with us. So helpful to witness someone who has gone through the process of RotoCuff Recovery. Today I’m at 12 weeks post surgery. PT is now into active recovery with still so passive therapy. My injury involved two thick tissue and clean around RotoCuff and bicep repair. Honestly I still hurt everyday. But as each week passes my range of motion continues to improve. Looking forward to your next video. Thanks again!!
Sherry, it will get better and the pain will diminish, it’s just a long road. Before you know it, you will be able to look back and know that you are making progress!
Thank YOU Donna for all the videos. I'm at week 8 post surgery. In some ways this has been the hardest week as I started the pulley exercises, which are hard. Even with heat, my first set is slow, but it does get a bit better as I continue. I'm doing my PT exercises 5x a day as instructed. I noticed that it takes me about 4 days before I get better at the exercises. I watched all your progress videos and it's wonderful to see what I can expect at each milestone. Boy is it going to be a long journey, but commitment to the PT is key. A note about the discomfort and knots people experience. My entire arm was knotted, stiff and uncomfortable. I got permission from both my PT and surgeon to get a professional massage. That really addressed my issues and the improvement on the mobility of my elbow was vast. I'm going for a second massage to address other areas that my PT suggested we focus on (back trigger point of the RC, and my pectoral muscles. I'll report back once I have my massage. I'm doing my PT at home (I have Kaiser insurance ... With all its good and not so good attributes) I'll say that I do like my PT but their protocol is not as comprehensive as other PT offices. I'm considering adding private PT next year but will have to asses my progress to see if it makes sense to add that at week 12 or 16.
Love the reference to SNL Super Star! I will be having my surgery on January 23 and want to thank you for the great words of wisdom. Positive attitude is so important and yours sure has made me less fearful
You are the best..thanks so much for sharing your experience..i had the surgery and i'm now at 7 weeks and just starting to feel lest pain and less stress about having it done. I think you are an amazing person for doing your videos, they have helped me so much and I have learnt more from you than from my surgeon and family doctor, sad to say. All the best to you!
@@funmakingmoneyify I appreciate all the time you put in and information that you gave in all your videos. I learnt so much from you. Just viewed your video from Mar 24, 2020 and so happy to see and hear you are doing well. I hope I can say the same thing in the months ahead. Hope you have a great day..
Your videos have been so helpful and encouraging. So glad that you made them . They have been helpful to so many people that are going through shoulder surgery. God bless you and your family. So glad that you are doing great. Give us hope that we will get better ourselves
Your videos are so helpful as I progress through my recovery! Now that I’m about 10 weeks along, I am rewatching the 12 week video to see how much I can look forward to doing!
My wife (Penny) had Rotator Cuff surgery on her left shoulder Apr. 12, 2017. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for talking about the knots you felt in your arm. These knots drove Penny crazy with pain, and when she would talk about them the attitude was either dismissive or "Oh, that's normal" . She has found a remedy when she has them ... me. I just rub her arm. Creating friction seems to break or untie the knots. So thank you once again ... you're a God send, an angel.
Hi Again Donna ... it's been 4 weeks since my Penny's surgery. Her doctor was surprised that she is recovering quickly. I again want to thank you for the positive message you shared about your surgery ... and even though there were times she was in much pain and wished that she never did have the operation your videos did have an impact ... and there is power in prayer. She just got home from her therapy ... they gave her more exercises to do.
Donna thank you so much for sharing your recovery journey! I am 10 weeks post op and your story has provided me such relief and encouragement. Funny, I just was shaking my head to your description of the forearm pain “HEY ME TOO!” - lol! I purchased a $7 massage roller ball on amazon this week and it works really well! Best wishes to you!
Thank you so very much Donna for having posted these videos. From pre surgery to now 11 weeks out your practical advise and progress has been beyond helpful and encouraging!! Thank you so so much!
If you are going to have this surgery... like I am... Donna is the BEST person to watch. I really wish she would update us on her progress. Her last video was 3 years ago. She is such a nice lady.
Hi Donna, I saw your video after my surgery (1-19-17), so I'm on my 8 th weeks now and have started my therapy last couple of weeks ago. You inspired me, I'm getting better now compared to my previous weeks. Thank you so much. I'll be looking forward for your development next month.
Although dated your recovery info is spot on. I am at 8 weeks post op on massive tear repair. Feeling extremely frustrated at my recovery pace. After your videos I am encouraged that everything is progressing normally. My progress mirrors yours very closely so optimistic that all is good and on the right path to recovery. Thanks again for posting
I know this was a long time ago, but your video has been so helpful. I am 10 weeks from surgery. I have the same aches you do trying to sleep. Thank you for doing these.
Happy for you Donna !! I’m not even three weeks after my operation. Not too bad glad you’re doing well ! Your videos are so helpful . Take care of yourself and God bless you
I was getting a little down about the length of the recovery/rehab period for my rotator cuff surgery, and found this video after Googling "rotator cuff surgery 12 weeks out." Your report helped me feel a lot better. I'm on just about the same timeline you were (and my surgeon laid it out - I just couldn't believe it would be months and months), now at 13 weeks and one week into strengthening. My physical therapy team is wonderful, even if I'm a little tired of seeing them so much ;) But I know I'll get there, and it's great to know I'm not the only one on this timeline (I seemed to only run into people who got better a lot quicker - I know, different injuries, different surgeries, etc.), when it seems even folks at rehab recovering from knee surgery are going faster! Anyway, thanks, Donna, for putting this out for us.
Thank you so much. I'm having rotator cuff surgery next month and I've been really nervous about what to expect. I realize its going to be a hard road but your videos encourage me that their is a light at the end of the tunnel. God bless
Thank you Donna. I am at my 16th week post op surgery. Your injury was pretty similar to mine, bicep tendon repair and full rotator tear. I am looking forward to your 20 week video. Thank you, Keith Michener.
David, with as fit as you were I am confident you will get it all back! There are a number of post shoulder surgery patients that have told me it was a full year before they felt completely normal. I believe the more you did before your surgery, the more impatient and frustrated you get because you can't do those activities as quickly as you would like. You'll get there; keep me posted on your progress.
i am at 12 weeks now. my rom is similar to you. my sleep just got better this week. been going to p.t. 3 times a week and doing my exercises 3 times a day. they have been working on rom, now we begin strengthening. you had issues with your forearm, i'm having issues with 2 fingers. probably from minimul use for the last 4 months. thanx for your videos. they have been a great help.
I have been following you since surgery. I am in my 9th week, and almost where you are at 12 weeks. Sleeping is an issue for me, also. Thanks for posting your journey. I too asked about swimming (Im feeling like a slug) So Im using a Kickboard in the water...Happy 4th of July
I’ve found and just watched all your post rotator cuff surgery videos. Greatly appreciated your honesty and candour. I’m scheduled for surgery on March 21st and am extremely hesitant to get it done. Mainly due to the fact my work is physically active. I’m a fitness instructor.
Donna, Thank you. Your videos have been extremely helpful. I had a full massive tear and bicep arthroscopic surgery August 2016, followed by sling and PT. MRI in Dec 2016 showed surgery had failed. Massive tear as big as the original injury, only the bicep surgery had worked. Open revision shoulder surgery 1/10/2017 with different (and much better) shoulder surgeon. Today is my 5 month post op mark and this recovery has paralleled yours. Your videos are informative, inspiring and reassuring. They have really helped me, and made a difference in my recovery.
Wow Lisa! That is a major setback but I am so glad to hear that you are back on the right track. I hope that you continue to progress in your recovery!
Thanks so much for all your videos. I watched them before I had surgery 8 weeks ago.Your attitude and energy are wonderful and healing. All your helpful information is very much appreciated! I wish you a complete and excellent healing.
Thank you for your reply. I'm on the slow road for the most part but coming along at a steady pace - 1 step forward 2 steps back... I had 3 procedures including 2 anchors for the bicep etc. The worst thing is getting frustrated when I feel so great one day with no pain and then do too much which results in pain for the next 2 days. Overall, your videos really have helped with the mental and emotional lift that I needed (still do). I feel like I did something bad because I'm not having more pain. Ugh. How are you doing now - how long has it been?
So it has been nine months since my surgery and I am still undergoing PT twice a week! I have some full range restriction still and have pain in the shoulder when 3/4's of the way fully raised and mild pain when sleeping still. I made an appointment with my surgeon early December to see if a cortisone injection would help as my physical therapist thinks that it might. It is definitely a long road. I could live with it but feel that it should and can be better. I had 4 anchors with 3 of the rotator cuff tendons repaired along with the bicep tendon repaired and the labrum just cleaned up. This isn't for sissys!! LOL!
Wow! I am so sorry that your progress is sluggish - for good reason! That is a lot for your poor body to go through. I had a lot more done than previously thought but nothing to match yours. I'm confident that you will be whole again but it will take twice as long for you. I know I lose patience but it really helps to compare notes. My procedures involved arthroscopic RC "repair" (anchors), supraspinatus & subscapularis (still very painful & tender); "extensive" glenohumeral debridement, subacromial decompression, and distal clavicle resection. Needless to say I was pretty torn up most likely due to all the sports, scuba, sailing, softball. I heard you say, in one of your videos, that you are a diver. Cold water is a bear given the equipment and heavy tank maneuvers. I've heard people say they have residual pain up to a year and I believe it. Sleeping is not comfortable. About a year before surgery I had a cortisone injection which really helped the pain but sadly does nothing to improve the rest of the situation. Talk to your body about its amazing healing abilities. You will heal and you need your body to believe it too. You have been a terrific cheer leader for those of us going through this - I am your biggest fan ;-)
You are too sweet Dyane! You have had a lot done as well, and I do believe that the more you have repaired, the longer it takes. I did go diving since my surgery! I was just shy of 6 months post op when I went and had no problem under water whatsoever! The hardest part was getting my BC on, and fortunately I had people around to help. I have not had any issues with cold water bothering my shoulder. I can also run with no issues either! You sound like you are healing nicely so just continue to stay positive!
Susie I am between a size 6-8 so I got the XS-L and it fits great. I loved it so much that I ended up buying a tan one as well! And yes, you put the operated arm in first from a straight hanging position, then pull over your head, and lastly put the good arm through.
THANK YOU😊, I am, 63, and 3 weeks post op this week. I made my first ponytail after 2 weeks. But, I pushed it. I am going to see my surgeon today to get stitches out. When they went in there was more damage than the MRI revealed. Torn tendon, and torn muscle, etc. UGH, 1st 2 weeks were ruff, lots of pain. Sleeping is a real drag. Propped up only. I appreciate your sharing. You give me hope for a better tomorrow. I truly am experiencing almost everything you have been challenged with and now I know...this too shall pass. Can't wait to "drop the sling". You Go Woman😉!
Hi..I've commented before but that was before my surgery. Today is exactly 4 weeks post. I am still benchmarking my ROM and pain thresholds against your videos. Which are, by far, the best I can find on YT. Thanks again for taking the time. I'm sore and it is generally a giant PIA but it's getting better. Very very slowly.
Just had my rotator surgery yesterday. Sure wish I had seen all these vblogs before. I am a nurse but really went to surgery very unprepared. But these videos help greatly. Thank you
Donna I love your videos! -I am 8wks post op and 5 weeks PT, I have been getting super discouraged,PT is kicking my ass , it is so much harder than I ever could have anticipated! It is comforting to see your progress!
Thanks Kim! I know it is frustrating as the progress is soo slow. But, slow and steady wins the race! Plan on it taking a year to fully recover. For me it was more like 18 months, but by 6 months there is really good progress and by 1 year it is so much better. Hang in there!
I will be eight weeks post surgery this coming Tuesday. My PT got me started on pulley last Thursday and it has been painful. I hear from a lot of people saying you gotta work through the pain. I am curious for those of you who are around 8 weeks, how painful your PT experience is. I am not getting a clear answer when I ask how much pain is OK? I would say my pain is around 5-6. Curious to see what your experience is.
@@solat319 I’m at 8 weeks now . Most pain is in the morning when waking up. Some of the stretches in PT are painful but gets better with ice afterwards. It’s been tough but we need to be positive 👍
I'm on week 12 of my second rotator repair (right Jan. 2017 and left Feb. 2020. You have done such a great job on these videos! I found you after my first repair and followed your advise. My recent surgery seems to be recovering slower, I'm sure due to the Covid issue. I am doing PT via video, but it seems to be coming along. Anyway, I'd like to give you a HUGE thank you for the information you've so eloquently relayed. Hope you are well!
Thank you so much for your videos. I've been watching them all to try and understand what I'm in for. My rotator cuff is a full thickness tear. Surgery scheduled for next Thursday. Not looking forward to this at all. High anxiety. Purchased a recliner today. Thank you for all of the helpful tips . I'm sure I will be watching these videos as I heal.
Kim, I also had no idea what to expect and tried to watch as many videos as I could and read as many blogs as I could. And that is why I made these videos so that I could help someone else! Just stay ahead of the pain and start taking the pain med's before you actually have pain! Good luck and let me know how you are doing.
Hi, Donna, Thank you for the videos! I'm at 12 weeks post surgery now, and I've been watching to follow your progress at each stage of my recovery. I have to admit, I'm feeling quite discouraged about things when I compare my ROM to yours at the 12 week point. I'm nowhere near full range of motion yet...I can only lift my arm to about chest height and I still have that "pulling and stretching" feeling with any movement at all. I'm still having a hard time sleeping at night. I am a 57 year old who is not in the greatest shape, and in addition to the full tear which I had repaired, I also have a partial tear in my other shoulder and a fracture of my collarbone (tears and fracture were from an injury sustained in a hard fall). I've been going to PT twice a week and still not able to return to work, per my orthopedic surgeon.
Maureen, please don't get discouraged and do compare your rate of recovery to mine. Everyone heals differently and at different speeds. Just be patient and make sure you are doing the exercises at home as well.
@@funmakingmoneyify I know....the logical part of my brain realizes that everyone heals at a different rate, but then there's the part that just wants to be over and done with it!! 😊 Thank you for taking the time to reply and for your words of encouragement. The good news is....I am returning to work tomorrow!! 👍
Donna thanks so much for this video. 10 weeks in and still a little frustrated. Your positive and optimistic outlook makes me think I still have hope !! lol
Hang in there! I bet by the time you are reading this, that it is already better than the 10 week mark! I remember that in my 11th week that I really turned a corner.
+Donna Westermeier thanks Donna... You were absolutely right week 12 I did notice some progress!!!! We should pay you for your advice and encouragement !!!! Hope all is well with you and your family....
+Donna Westermeier thanks Donna... You were absolutely right week 12 I did notice some progress!!!! We should pay you for your advice and encouragement !!!! Hope all is well with you and your family....
Nice to see your smiling face. Glad you are feeling better. I am at 5 weeks post rotator cuff and sub acronion decompression surgery.Going through pt now. So stiff. I play tennis so I need as much rom as possible.Love your videos and insights!
David, that is wonderful!! I am very happy for you! I am okay... I do not have full range yet and it does still hurt with most movement. 😳 I just keep telling myself that it can take 6 months and maybe even a year to be fully normal. I did find out at my last visit that I ended up with a complete tear of one tendon, partial tears of two more rotator cuff tendons and a tear in my bicep tendon and labrum and 4 anchors placed. So I guess I had a lot more done than I thought! Keep up the great rehab!
Donna Westermeier I am at 10 weeks now and even though I love how much my ROM has improved, I too have much of my movements painful. I was even thinking did I do something to retear ? So it looks like it is normal to have pain at this point. Good to know.
I'm so glad you're doing so well and want to thank you for the mention of the racquetball, I'm waiting on an mri to see if I have a rotator cuff tear and I get that terrible forearm pain so I got some racquetballs today after watching your video and it really works!! I couldn't believe how it took the pain away, helped my neck too. Thank you so much!! :)
Donna, thank you for making these videos. I am 13 weeks out getting ready to be released to work next week. I have more good days than bad but have made it through the night sleeping once! I have lots knots- more in my neck and top of my back. But my bicep and forearm still hurt as well. Your touching on that made me not feel so frightened. I did slack off on pt exercises at home this week. I just wanted to be normal and not hurt for awhile...but I will go to pt today...you inspire me
Thankyou so much , I feel like it’s never gunna get better, I am going stir crazy , you just uplifted me , you have no idea how you just made me feel thankyou
I agree with all the other posts that your timeline recovery has been way helpful! I am 9 weeks post op and "tracking" well according to physical therapist. My one area of discomfort is sleeping.. What position did you find most comfortable? Pillows? Where did you place them for maximum support? Did you use a wedge or somehow prop yourself up with addition pillows? Isn't it cool how your timeline is 5 years old and you are still touching so many of us "out here"? One thing you said in an earlier post resonants with me regularly~one day you feel terrific with the progress and the next, not so much...Your encouragement gets me through "those days"....
I am at 9 weeks and have watched all your videos. I had pretty much the exact same surgery you did but with smaller incisions. Great videos !!!! I am working extremely hard at my PT and seem to be ahead of schedule on a lot of things :) Have very much enjoyed your videos and insight. It has no doubt helped me from becoming inpatient with my recovery.
I am 8 weeks out and moving better but I too feel the upper arm pain. I need to start PT but the co pays are too much for my budget! These videos help show me ROM references and exercise at home ideas. Good luck on your recovery! This encouraged me!! Thanks!!!
Glad it helped you Margaret! And I hope that your MRI shows that you don't need surgery and that all that is required is some physical therapy! Good luck to you!
Thank you for sharing this! It is so nice to have a point of reference. I had the same intentions of documenting my progress , but then forgot in my Percocet fog. haha I am now 13 weeks post-op bicep tendon and rotator cuff repair. I appear to be on schedule with my recovery. Minimal pain. I am just getting anxious and ready to get back to my fitness routine! Thank you again. I hope you have fully recovered!
Wishing you happy holidays!! All these years later, I'm into a yr of recovery ( but I developed( CRPD ) NOT a good thing, a syndrome nerve! So, I don't have half the range as you do. But just to let you know , how thankful I am you did this!! Be well, I have watched all your posts!! And saw your actually found ( NYC ) help fir your posture!! Be well, happy holidays
Great videos! My friend had surgery a few days ago so I've picked up some tips for her that are helpful especially for early on. Hope you're still progressing well.
Thank you so much for sharing! Your videos are really helpful! I’m 2.5 weeks out from a full supraspinatus tear and while things are getting better and I can sleep through the night in my bed, your movement in this video seems like a dream at this point in time! Glad to hear that you got better!
Martin, I believe that I used my ice machine for 6 weeks and then went to an ice pack whenever I did exercises or if the shoulder was really bothering me. From the 4 to 6 months post op, I have really only used ice after sessions with the physical therapist.
hi donna thank you for everything you did and do for shoulder victims. this is my experience, hope it help others, im not pretty like you to shoot videos hence the typing, im male 42 injured while bench pressing, I usually warm up with 25 lbs but not sure why I didnt that day I went straight to 45 lbs its not much, total of 135 lbs including barbell, 2 reps fine 3rd rep I felt the rip on my right shoulder worst feeling ever when you know something was extremely wrong. I kinda knew I tore my rotator cuff rightaway, I ran to restroom cold sweat poured down I was in panic mode, I used lot of force to lift it and I didnt warm up and uneven weight distribution , it hurt for two days, I called my friend ortho surgeon I got MRI done as I suspected full thickness tear of supraspinatus. so he told me I need it to be fixed within 6 weeks, I did it at 7th week due to job commitment. so day of surgery : nerve block Preop, I was really nervous my heart rate shot up bp shot up, they sedated me to do nerve block which I believe not a good idea anyways surgery done post op: probably the worst day of my life physically nerve block wore off at night throbbing pain all night, and spasms didnt sleep not even for 2 minutes post op week 1: still lot of pain I dont even remember sleeping 1-2 hrs, taking pain meds, feeling nauseous, hard to find position to sleep, im fine while awake and in sling, as soon as you about to fall asleep your body relaxes and shoulder anatomy relaxes that lead to sharp pain. that eventually wake you up, not sure why my theory is sleep. causes muscle relaxation that lead to postural changes in shoulder anatomy that lead to nerves impingements or irritations, because your anatomy is not the same as it was before its compromised with all the controlled stabbing arthroscopically ...so it s hell first week with pain week2: my friend removed sutures he said looks fine, same problems with sleeping excruciating sharp pain in the middle of sleep wakes me up, it subsides slowly while keeping myself up, its like Ondine's curse story you die if you sleep..anyways still lot of pain , they told me to take Lyrica at night, so basically no sleep I would be lucky if I get 2-3 hrs sleep. week3: same story no sleep lots of pain, sometimes sharp pain when I sneeze or cough it worries me to sneeze, certain types of movements cause sudden sharp pain sometimes even clicks, those clicks and feelings of lose shoulder Make me worry about retear. yes im in sling, even with sling on shoulder joint moves, Lots of doubts about if it's gonna heal at all. lot of negative thoughts, I took Lyrica at night on post op day 20, I was able to sleep better im sure there was pain but pain was masked by Lyrica . one more week to see the surgeon at 4 weeks follow up.. ill edit this after 4th week. had I known I would suffer this much mentally and physically because of weight lifting I would have never stepped into the gym .. but life happens 4th week: pain improved, sleep is better, im removing the sling in the middle of the night, sometimes I wake up with sharp pain, started physical therapy with external rotation passive only. 5th week: pain signifcantly improved, im not wearing the sling most of the time, sometimes I wear it during the sleep, sometimes I remove it depends on how I feel it, sleeping is much better, I stopped pain meds after 3rd week, I took only once this week, physical therapy is going well. tolerable.
Thank you for sharing I am 10 days after full shoulder replacement and bicep tendon repair How did you put hair in ponytail? Bun? I’m a hairstylist and not even easy for me Thank you Kim :)
Thx Donna for your positive video!!! I feel so anxious and I`m only in my third week post op. I know it`s gonna get tougher, but I really want this to be over! I know though, I`ll muster up some patience! Ok, just wanted to give you a shout out and say thx.
Hey Donna, I'm getting close to my 12 week mark. I'm not nearly doing as well as you. But I'm trying not to compare. I do feel the pain and soreness in my forearm like you do, but I also get it in my bicep and tricep area. Alternating between ice & heat helps. Using biofreeze also helps. Anti-inflammatory remedies help too. My biggest complaint is my neck and upper trapezius area having pain still. Not sure why. In your last video (8 wk) you mentioned you getting a medical massage. I'm going to ask my Dr if I can get one, I really feel like that may help. I'm even looking into acupuncture to ease this pain. You are such a trooper, so positive about all your recovery progress. Thanks for all your videos. Very encouraging! :-)
Rachel, I'm not sure how long you were in a sling but that wrecks havoc on your body from your neck to your hips! I still have issues at times with my neck and traps, not to mention tightness in my pecs and lats! Massage, chiropractic care, and accupuncture can all be helpful I believe.
I have started working with yellow bands and light hand weights. I find that it's bothering my shoulder. Did you have sharp pains while doing the external rotation with the bands? That's where my pain started. My therapist had me stop doing those exercises but the pain isn't going away. I'm getting a bit worried about it. Hopefully I'm just paranoid. I'm 11 weeks post op.
I am also having pain at the top of my shoulder when working with bands. Maybe it is my age at 61. I am at 13 weeks and I don't have the range lifting from the side that she has.
12 weeks out from a very similar surgery. 2nd time. Other shoulder 2 years ago. AT 8 weeks I felt I turned the corner and had started a rapid recovery. Weeks 9-12 have gone backwards quite a bit. Can do a lot of things but have much more pain than I did at 8 weeks. Found out that just because I can do certain physical things does not mean that I should do them. Hoping to see a big improvement soon. Shoulder surgery certainly can mess with your mind :)
ty for this, i had a full tear and surgery. the most miserable ive felt ever, and it aged me. im healed now its been 2 yrs but felt i wouldnt do it now if i knew what i would go through. now my left shoulder is starting with the same symptoms.
Shannon J., don’t you feel that your right shoulder is stronger than if you hadn’t had the surgery? I know mine is and that is enough for me to do the other shoulder is ever needed. It’s also been 4 years for me so time makes you forget how difficult the healing process was!
Thanks, i just had subscapularis tendon repair and biceps tenodesis 11/8/16. they couldn't get it all with the scope, so i ended up with a 4" incision, just got stitches out today, PT to be scheduled soon. i'm fairly athletic, hope to see some improvement soon. Thanks, your videos are very helpful.
Sara, make sure the incision does not get adhesions. I ended having my massage therapist do cupping which wasn't until 7 months and it really helped. If I had someone do the cupping sooner, it probably would have been easier. Hope you are back to most things in no time!
I'm at 10 weeks post surgery, and was hoping to be much further along than I am...but, my progress/experience is similar to yours. I get that fatigued feeling in my forearm feeling too...and, sometimes it is awful...planned to wrap Christmas presents about 10 days ago, but forearm fatigue was so bad, I just threw all gifts in bags...good enough. I've started keeping a diary, so I can at least read the small changes, and see the progress...when I get frustrated, when it feels like it's not getting better. I've already made it 10 weeks, I'm hopeful in another 10 weeks, things will be dramatically better?!?!
Gale, I remember at the stage you are at that the progress seemed slow, then at about 11 1/2 weeks I seemed to turn a corner and really noticed an improvement. Good idea to start a diary because then you really do see how far you have come. Hang in there!
Thanks for sharing I had Right rotator cuff repair 12/11/2023 so 4 weeks now My biggest challenge is sleeping even with recliner I am up every night with pain Was wondering if you have any inputs No matter what pain medication I take stil wake up with pain As long as sitting/ walking I have no pain
@@hamidnoorollah8628 , it might be how your sling is positioned that is making it hard to sleep, maybe it will be better when then sling comes off and you can support the arm with pillows to get comfortable.
Your videos are helpful and I see when you lift your arm above your head you don’t appear to be in pain . I am 10 weeks following total shoulder replacement and PT seems to be going well and I can slowly get my arm up above my head but right at the point where I am at shoulder height it is extremely painful and I force it through and slowly continue raising my arm. The same happens when I lower my arm-Discomfort upon lowering but Extreme pain right at shoulder height. Will this improve?
I know your surgery was 5 years ago now but I just had rotator cuff surgery 11 weeks ago and your videos are VERY helpful. We seem to be progressing similarly so it’s good to know I’m on track and the encouragement you offer is welcoming. Thank you for doing these videos!
Hi, not sure if you will see this....BUT, I am approaching surgery for much of the same. I can't tell you how much your videos are helping me prepare for surgery and what to expect! I too am an independent person and your frank conversations are a lifesaver!! Thank you and I'm so happy that you have recovered!!
Deborah, I’m glad the videos have helped. Please keep me posted on how the surgery goes.
Thank you.
Opps! I only saw 5 weeks ago, but now see your surgery was 5 years ago and you are 80 years young!!
Thank you, Donna for sharing your recovery experience. I watched several of your videos before surgery and it helped me prepare. Now at 5 weeks post-op I'm watching again and am encouraged; not so alone feeling. It really is a tough recovery.
Hello I'm at 3 months out and waiting to turn the corner for the pain
@@larrybenarth1927 Really? Pain still at 3 months? Not doing something right.
Damian, thanks for your message and I hope your recovery continues to progress well!
Couldn't agree more. My surgery is scheduled for 7/23/2020. I fell more prepared. God bless
Dennis Conlon, you are welcome! I’m glad you are getting relief with the lacrosse ball.
Thank you for your encouraging words!❤️
I watched this video multiple times all through out my recovery so far. I am at 11 weeks now and can say that my ROM is pretty similar now.
Great advice! Thanks for sharing and good luck to you in your continued healing!
Love the reference to SNL Super Star! I will be having my surgery on January 23 and want to thank you for the great words of wisdom. Positive attitude is so important and yours sure has made me less fearful
Thank you, Donna. I am in my fourth week of rehab after seven weeks in a sling. I appreciate you sharing your experience to help me get through mine.

Your videos have been so helpful and encouraging.
So glad that you made them .
They have been helpful to so many people that are going through shoulder surgery.
God bless you and your family.
So glad that you are doing great.
Give us hope that
we will get better ourselves
Well Tim, we all wish we had someone like you to be our remedy for spasms!
Amen to the power of prayer Tim!
Thanks for documenting your journey. It has helped a lot as I continue to recover from my own rotator cuff repair surgery.
Thank you so very much Donna for having posted these videos. From pre surgery to now 11 weeks out your practical advise and progress has been beyond helpful and encouraging!! Thank you so so much!
Pat O'Connell, you are welcome!
If you are going to have this surgery... like I am... Donna is the BEST person to watch.

Thank you Donna! Watch your progress all the time, I
am 12 weeks after surgery, and doing so much better.
Glad the videos have helped give you encouragement, as that was my intent. Hang in there it will continue to get better!
I know this was a long time ago, but your video has been so helpful. I am 10 weeks from surgery. I have the same aches you do trying to sleep. Thank you for doing these.
You are most welcome!
Happy for you Donna !! I’m not even three weeks after my operation. Not too bad glad you’re doing well ! Your videos are so helpful . Take care of yourself and God bless you
Thank you for sharing your journey. The information has been priceless. I pray that your recovery will continue to abound and be fruitful.
I love your videos and watch them over and over. It is helping me get push through this healing process.
You are welcome Ann, remember, it's not about the race, it's about a successful finish! You will get there!
Thank you so much. I'm having rotator cuff surgery next month and I've been really nervous about what to expect. I realize its going to be a hard road but your videos encourage me that their is a light at the end of the tunnel. God bless
Renee, thank you! Keep me posted on how you do after surgery.

Good luck to you. I think that you are making the right decision!
Donna,
Thank you.
Dyane, thank you! How are you coming along? I hope it has been event free so far!
You go Melinda!!
Thank you Donna, YOU GO TOO!!!
At 9 weeks today! Awesome videos!!
Thank you Doug! I am glad that you are moving in the right direction, hang in there!

Thanks Kim! I know it is frustrating as the progress is soo slow. But, slow and steady wins the race! Plan on it taking a year to fully recover. For me it was more like 18 months, but by 6 months there is really good progress and by 1 year it is so much better. Hang in there!
Same here feeling defeated.

Thank you so much for your videos. My husband just had his surgery and they are so helpful
Hi, Donna,
Thank you for the videos!
Maureen, please don't get discouraged and do
compare your rate of recovery to mine. Everyone
heals differently and at different speeds. Just
be patient and make sure you are doing the
exercises at home as well.
@@funmakingmoneyify I know....the logical part of my brain realizes that everyone heals at a different rate, but then there's the part that just wants to be over and done with it!! 😊

Glad you are recovering well! Yes, I am fully recovered!
I'm at 12 weeks and am a lot like where you were at 12 weeks. Love you videos
Thank you!
Thank you for your video.. It is really helping me.. I am now at 12 weeks and I am very close to where you are.. Woohoo... you inspire me..
Thank you so much for sharing! Your videos are really helpful! I’m 2.5 weeks out from a full supraspinatus tear and while things are getting better and I can sleep through the night in my bed, your movement in this video seems like a dream at this point in time! Glad to hear that you got better!
You will get there too!
Martin, I believe that I used my ice machine for 6 weeks and then went to an ice pack whenever I did exercises or if the shoulder was really bothering me. From the 4 to 6 months post op, I have really only used ice after sessions with the physical therapist.
Very helpful and encouraging, I've got hope, thank you!
Thank you...very helpful!...I also have that pain in the forearm...I'm 10 weeks post and I'm about exactly where you atre in this video!
Thank you for the pep talk. I’m 10 days from surgery now.
hi donna thank you for everything you did and do for shoulder victims. this is my experience, hope it help others, im not pretty like you to shoot videos hence the typing, im male 42 injured while bench pressing, I usually warm up with 25 lbs but not sure why I didnt that day I went straight to 45 lbs its not much, total of 135 lbs including barbell, 2 reps fine 3rd rep I felt the rip on my right shoulder worst feeling ever when you know something was extremely wrong. I kinda knew I tore my rotator cuff rightaway, I ran to restroom cold sweat poured down I was in panic mode, I used lot of force to lift it and I didnt warm up and uneven weight distribution , it hurt for two days, I called my friend ortho surgeon I got MRI done as I suspected full thickness tear of supraspinatus. so he told me I need it to be fixed within 6 weeks, I did it at 7th week due to job commitment.
so day of surgery : nerve block Preop, I was really nervous my heart rate shot up bp shot up, they sedated me to do nerve block which I believe not a good idea anyways surgery done
post op: probably the worst day of my life physically nerve block wore off at night throbbing pain all night, and spasms didnt sleep not even for 2 minutes
post op week 1: still lot of pain I dont even remember sleeping 1-2 hrs, taking pain meds, feeling nauseous, hard to find position to sleep, im fine while awake and in sling, as soon as you about to fall asleep your body relaxes and shoulder anatomy relaxes that lead to sharp pain. that eventually wake you up, not sure why my theory is sleep. causes muscle relaxation that lead to postural changes in shoulder anatomy that lead to nerves impingements or irritations, because your anatomy is not the same as it was before its compromised with all the controlled stabbing arthroscopically ...so it s hell first week with pain
week2: my friend removed sutures he said looks fine, same problems with sleeping excruciating sharp pain in the middle of sleep wakes me up, it subsides slowly while keeping myself up, its like Ondine's curse story you die if you sleep..anyways still lot of pain , they told me to take Lyrica at night, so basically no sleep I would be lucky if I get 2-3 hrs sleep.
week3: same story no sleep lots of pain, sometimes sharp pain when I sneeze or cough it worries me to sneeze, certain types of movements cause sudden sharp pain sometimes even clicks, those clicks and feelings of lose shoulder Make me worry about retear. yes im in sling, even with sling on shoulder joint moves, Lots of doubts about if it's gonna heal at all. lot of negative thoughts, I took Lyrica at night on post op day 20, I was able to sleep better im sure there was pain but pain was masked by Lyrica .
one more week to see the surgeon at 4 weeks follow up..
ill edit this after 4th week.
had I known I would suffer this much mentally and physically because of weight lifting I would have never stepped into the gym .. but life happens
4th week: pain improved, sleep is better, im removing the sling in the middle of the night, sometimes I wake up with sharp pain, started physical therapy with external rotation passive only.
5th week: pain signifcantly improved, im not wearing the sling most of the time, sometimes I wear it during the sleep, sometimes I remove it depends on how I feel it, sleeping is much better, I stopped pain meds after 3rd week, I took only once this week, physical therapy is going well. tolerable.
Oh my gosh, I am so sorry that you have had so much pain through your recovery! I pray that things turn around for you soon!
thank you 4 weeks done, seems like this is turning point. I started rehab, doing passive external rotation. @@funmakingmoneyify
Thank you for sharing
I am 10 days after full shoulder replacement and bicep tendon repair
How did you put hair in ponytail? Bun?
I’m a hairstylist and not even easy for me
Thank you
Kim :)
I just got rotator cuff surgery today omg thank for the videos! Looking forward to be healthy again. 😀
Thanks so much for the effort you made to record these videos.Best of all to you!
10 weeks post op and enjoying watching and learning!
:Superstar! - Thanks for these - having surgery on Tues. Just bought three of those poncho's on Ebay.
Thx Donna for your positive video!!! I feel so anxious and I`m only in my third week post op. I know it`s gonna get tougher, but I really want this to be over! I know though, I`ll muster up some patience! Ok, just wanted to give you a shout out and say thx.
Ivan, as far as I'm concerned, the worst part is over! It is only going to get better from here on out! Hang in there!
Thanks so much for these videos! Three weeks post op now and I’ve been using these as my guide. You have made my recovery so much easier.
I still have issues at times with my neck and traps, not to mention
tightness in my pecs and lats! Massage, chiropractic care, and accupuncture can all be helpful I believe.
Rachel Nuñez I got some CBD cream for my pain.It helps
Thank you very much for this video, it was very helpful in understanding progress, I’m still only one month out and it’s been rough
Hang in there!
11.5 weeks was also a milestone for me as well
Thank you for these updates 🙏🏽
I have started working with yellow bands and light hand weights. I find that it's bothering my shoulder. Did you have sharp pains while doing the external rotation with the bands? That's where my pain started. My therapist had me stop doing those exercises but the pain isn't going away. I'm getting a bit worried about it. Hopefully I'm just paranoid. I'm 11 weeks post op.
I am also having pain at the top of my shoulder when working with bands. Maybe it is my age at 61. I am at 13 weeks and I don't have the range lifting from the side that she has.
Thank you very much for your videos. I am 7 weeks post op and I am struggling to get this shoulder moving.
Charles, you are at the very beginning of when you are supposed to start moving the shoulder so don't be discouraged. This is normal!
William Neal, yes it can because we don’t always progress the way we think we should! Hang in there, it will get better!
ty for this, i had a full tear and surgery.
the most miserable ive felt ever, and it aged me. im healed now its been 2 yrs but felt i wouldnt do it now if i knew what i would go through.
now my left shoulder is starting with the same symptoms.
Donna Westermeier Thanks!
Thanks for sharing
I had Right rotator cuff repair 12/11/2023 so 4 weeks now
My biggest challenge is sleeping even with recliner
I am up every night with pain
Was wondering if you have any inputs
No matter what pain medication I take stil wake up with pain
As long as sitting/ walking I have no pain
Are you in a sling still?
Yes, will be 6 weeks this coming Monday
Starting PT on Monday
@@hamidnoorollah8628 , it might be how your sling is positioned that is making it hard to sleep, maybe it will be better when then sling comes off and you can support the arm with pillows to get comfortable.
Thanks again 😊
Your videos are helpful and I see when you lift your arm above your head you don’t appear to be in pain . I am 10 weeks following total shoulder replacement and PT seems to be going well and I can slowly get my arm up above my head but right at the point where I am at shoulder height it is extremely painful and I force it through and slowly continue raising my arm. The same happens when I lower my arm-Discomfort upon lowering but Extreme pain right at shoulder height. Will this improve?
Yes, it will definitely improve- hang in there!
I also have fore arm pain. I'm 9 weeks I only have about 30% range of motionhave to see the doc in 2 days.
