    i have 9 years suit retaile experience but zero fashion buying experience, but was offered a job full-time on the sales floor (high end suiting) with a 20 month training program where the company will train me over 20 months and get me to pop out of the showroom once a week to learn buying with the head office team. They even said i could go to Italy and Spain since the suit fabrics are all sourced from those regions.
    I dont have a bachelors, never studied. I only sold suits. Do you think 20 months is enough for me to learn the basics of buying?
    I am super nervous, but excited. Glad i found this video

      hi! I would recommend searching Glassdoor for salary estimates based on your city (for example in NY you would be getting paid more than other cities in America) I’m comfortable where it covers my cost of living, but of course I’m not making as much as I did when I worked in consulting where I had a lot more savings. I have a few videos lined up on resumes and interviews, I’ll try to elaborate on these topics where it’s fitting

    I busted graduated from LIM College in midtown with a bachelors degree in fashion merchandising and my school required 3 internships being 1 retail and 2 corporate. I had my corporate internships in merchandising and marketing at a non-profit organization. Now that I graduated I don't know if I want to apply for an assistant buying job or a merchandising assistant. I know they are very similar but I do not know if I want to focus more on buying or not. Any advice?

    • @pattycore
      @pattycore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! These are very similar paths. I’ve personally seen that positions under merchandising can be a bit more operational than buying (merchandising is a broader term, encompassing processes like getting items up on the website, maintaining samples) where buying is mainly focusing on the actual step of writing and sending orders (but buying assistants also have other responsibilities as well and companies use them interchangeably). There are plenty of different departments you can try if you don’t enjoy buying/merchandising such as marketing, sales (you can look into the wholesale/account executive side where you’re representing the brand). It’s a tough job market right now so I’d say keep an open mind and use the interview process as a way to learn about new positions.

  • @julianna9417

    do u think it’s better to have a broader degree in like business for more options and like ‘security’ or fashion merchandising for the specification and like In on the industry?

    • @pattycore
      @pattycore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if you're 100% set on fashion, going to a fashion school/program helps because you will have more exposure and connections to fashion companies. if you have any thought of entering other fields, business would be better since it's applicable to everything!

      hi! so I will be honest with fashion buying/merchandising you should be comfortable working with numbers. if you want to take this route you should definitely try out some business courses first! there are also other paths in fashion like marketing, PR, design, that doesn’t work as much with numbers so you can consider those as well! best thing to do is take on different internship opportunities to see what you like best

    How good should your math be to be a fashion buyer? I don't know how math works in high school in america, but I took the easier math in high school that is more practical, rather than the more difficult one that had to do with trigonometry and all that stuff😅😅

      hi! honestly high school math level won't matter as much, as long as you take something related to math in college/undergrad! most buying jobs look for college degrees, classes i recommend are basic financial business or statistics - you just need to be comfortable with basic math, nothing crazy!

    Hello. I am from India. I have recently finished my Post graduation in MBA (Business Consulting) from Australia. The only reason I chose a foreign country is that I can find something related to fashion, because in India there aren’t much opportunities.
    My dream and passion are to be working for luxury fashion brands. Fashion buyer is my first priority as a career choice. I didn’t even know that fashion internships existed while I studying. It was my mistake that I did not do my research properly. But now that I am seeing so many videos on fashion buying everyone says internships are the first step. But I am stuck in India right now. I want to go back to Australia and look for internships and join brands there. So, do you suggest me anything about I can do right now from home. And also, as u mentioned earlier I am very average with math. So, in the interview of a fashion buyer, will they ask math related questions?

      check if any fashion companies are hiring remote interns - even if it's not buying, if it's a fashion company the experience will help! you can also try taking online courses from fashion schools. they will run a retail math assessment, but it is very basic and they give you a lot of the formulas to use
