Reusing character designs in all of their works seems to be a really common thing for mangaka, I find that really charming. They are basically putting their OC into different stories because they like drawing them, just like any other artist with OC's would!
In this case, it seems Oda always wanted to draw Luffy and Nami.... In the case of Zoro, I feel it's more that he probably just didn't have enough character designs and needed something quick and reliable....
A thing i thought about, and i doubt im the first here, is that just like Monster and Ryuma being canon in the One Piece story, i feel that Romance Dawn could be real too. How insane would it be if Joyboy is the Luffy from the Romance Dawn story.
I really like Sanjis early design. It would’ve been cool if Oda had a western style gunslinger character throughout the series. Would’ve been cool if a worst generation crew had a group of cowboys
To be fair, Peace Main vs Morganian pirates IS a theme in One Piece, it's just not spelled out. But the types of pirates that fit that model are represented in the series. And even Warlords are perceived to be Peace Main like pirates that are officially backed by the government. I read all the version of Romance Dawn decades ago.
Its so cool how he intended for nami to be a fighter and it was such a good design too. I really like the current nami but wish there were more strong female fighters
To be honest, Zoro and Sanji’s bickering to some degree could still be seen as an Eastern vs Western clash, but just less on the nose. Especially since Zoro is such a distinctly Japanese character while Sanji still carries a lot more Western ideals of chivalry and is more prone to emotional outburst than stoicism (think loud European vs quiet Japanese), I think there’s still merit to that interpretation making it’s way into the final characters.
@@ZhaneDFrost I don’t know if that’s necessarily true. Zoro has consistently done better than Sanji in popularity polls in Japan so he is definitely hugely popular in Japan as well. And Sanji consistently polls better among Western fans of a certain demographic (re: the tumblr sort) than Zoro because Zoro is a very masculine and stoic character which appeals less to those communities. However, that being said, that actually makes sense to me? A lot of Westerners who watch anime do so partly because they are enamored with Japanese culture, and a lot of Japanese are enamored with Western culture. So it makes a weird amount of sense that Zoro would be more popular in the West and Sanji in the East. Sometimes we more dislike what is familiar and place greater value on that which is different because it is easier for us to see the flaws in our own cultural morays and traditions than foreigners might while idealizing what we see in foreign cultures because we have not lived their downsides in the same way. Japanese in general are very enamored with Europe and European culture and such are highly regarded there and Sanji is a very conventionally attractive blond haired European man which appeals a lot to a Japanese audience. Law has the female Japanese fans in a chokehold, though, I don’t know what it is about the guy, but he damn near has a cult following there. Also, part of what makes Sanji more disliked in the West are the aspects of his character that are actually more prevalent and normalized in Japanese media but hated (for good reason) in the West: his perversion. If that aspect of his character was more toned down and Oda had leaned more into the chivalrous aspect, I think he would be better regarded in the West. As it is many Western fans want to like him more, but can’t get over the fact that he is a borderline criminally horny simp.
