We had the privilege of seeing Don Rickles perform at Casino Rama just a few short months before his passing. He was way different in person. He told of missing his friends who'd passed that he loved so much. He cried on stage and told everyone to stop taking their friends and family for granted because tomorrow isn't guaranteed. He told of his great friendship with Bob Newhart. Yes there was loads of laughter, but we knew he was close to his time because he was out of breath a lot but performed nevertheless less. Don Rickles has my respect as an entertainer and a man. He was loved and is missed. R.I.P. Don, Alan, Groucho, Johnny, Dean, and all the rest.
Thank you for sharing that awesome story.
Awww nice story.
I like Milton B. Too
Dick cavett is still alive, so is ralph nader, and peter marshall and so is rich little
Would have loved to see Don rickles like you angela and may they rest in peace. Legends that will never be replaced.
@@joemcloughlin7250 me too
He saved my life. I was so depressed had difficulty wanting to go on. After laughing so hard I turned to Rickles too. They both helped me.
Glad you’re still here.
Groucho Marx was so quick on his feet. Wow to think that most of these legends have passed on but to watch some of them when I was a child in the 80's is truly remarkable and memorable. The touch tone phone was just catching on, at most 5 channels on the Tv, and the national anthem played at 12 midnight depending on the time zone. Great entertainers for sure.
I can’t tell you how many chills I got when I heard Dick cavett. Besides Tom Snyder he was always my favorite and I nearly lost it with every single person who walked to the podium. We’ll never have roasts or even people like these again
All were great but Groucho and Rickels are something else
Watching this show 57 years after it first aired and admiring all the talent of each and every individual that participated. It was non stop laughter from pure talent that sometimes I feel we are missing today. Thank you for showing and really enjoy your channel, thanks again.
Thank you, for watching. Appreciate it.
I respect any comedian who made Groucho stand up and shake hand.
This was one of the few times it's been GREAT being old enough to remember all these guys!!!
Groucho killing it as usual.
As usual
@@richardtreem9202 Yes. And he does it with such deadpan, such effortlessness. With perfect timing. Certainly on the Mount Rushmore of comedy.
Considering his age, SO quick and sharp.
Guy couldn't shut up with non funny quips.
WOW...these guys are HILARIOUS & dished it out with CLASS!! All Immortals.
You mean like the Chevy chase roast of shame.
@@Physics072chevy was a giant pain in the ass to everyone and finally realised no one actually liked him
A group with class. The best thing about this is they all know what comedy means and how to express themselves.
I would have loved to be at one of these roasts live. Everyone up there were friends , worked together . Nobody got the panties in a bunch . It was 90 minutes of laughter and great comradely . Glad to have grown up in the golden age of comedy . Thanks for the memories……
The reactionay contrast between Groucho and Don was facinating.
Alan King, an underated comedian, master of ceremonies, actor, and story teller, and briefly a pro boxer in his early years. From the same rough cut night club scene as Don Rickles beginnings. A brilliant mind. Robert at 68.
Why isn't this the greatest??? Ahead of times!!! 2024.
I love the Flip Wilson segment of the show at 21:03. Many thanks for this footage, long may it stay on TH-cam.
What can I say about Flip Wilson, hilarious.
He was a great man.
Funny.
Really? I was looking forward to his segment but I think it sucked the most.🥺
Flip had Johnny laughing soooo hard the night he made his appearance….. th-cam.com/video/xG3v_kA0Stw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aegNtgGPOPgEnJ3o
VERY FORWARD! LOVED Dean Martin roasts. With everyone.
Groucho Marx is brutal but incredible. Considering how polite he was on his own game show, it's amazing to see him here, being a total denigrating wit. A monster of the medium.
Steve Allen goes into the audience and gets Carson into some trouble.
5:29 Alan earned his paycheck for the "cabdriver" joke 😆 comedy that still holds up!
I was born in 1970, so, unfortunately, my first decade was the best my life could ever be!!!!!! As 70s kids, we got to be young at the greatest peak of America, of our peacetime, (between Nam and Lebanon/Beirut was a record 7 years, for our violent government!), of the world of fun, as experienced by human beings. WE had it all! There wasn't much reason to advance any further. Most of all, we still had freedom, now it's gone forever, not taken by some foreign government, but by our own, war drumbeating government. 70s kids started at the top! A Glorious Time Indeed
Dick Cavett, an underated interviewer and show host, especially with actors and Rock stars in the day.
This is what real comedy is about! Classic! 👌
I was the youngest of 8 girls, we had had a 3 bedroom house so the 4 oldest shared a room and the 4 youngest shared the other. The older girls room had a small black and white TV that we would all sneak and watch the Johnny Carson show since I could remember .. I was born in 1965. I watched him until David Letterman first aired. I love Don Rickles and Johnny together ❤️
Too good! All the people who filled my childhood with rolling on the floor, "Ow! I can't stop laughing!" awesomeness! Thank you for posting this!
It was a really big shoe!
A truly wonderful show ❤ 😍 loved all the comedic genuis god bless them rip 🙏 all you greats
Thanks so much for putting these up. They warm my heart and make me laugh, unlike today's "comedians"
Thanks again for watching.
American treasured humour
Well, you're finally at the age where you can listen to your favorite songs in the elevators.
@@brucenlong, all written by you..
Great😂
Groucho Marx had a great bit in this. It was interesting that in his rebuttal time, Johnny never went after Groucho. What a great show from start to finish.
I could e
Watch
Episodes thru all that were ever recorded, these were among the top of the crop of comedy
Such a wonderful era, warms the heart and so much good innocent fun and laughter❤🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
Friars Club Roasts were epic.
The old ones and the Dean Martin Roasts were amazing!!!!!
These days they lick the toilet bowl and vomit up mean statements that are simply not funny.
Even Rickles was never that mean. And he was an insult comic. He was THE Insult Comic.
Thank-you so much for posting this! I miss all these guys so very much. So much humor from so many great men. God bless them all!
After watching this roast, my suspicious are confirmed. The best comedians have passed on and their comedy writers went with them!
Rickles had no 'comedy writer'. He winged it/improvd it every time. I believe Alan King wrote his own material.

That was great
Flip Wilson really funny
WOW!!!!!!!! They all killed. So funny
I really enjoyed this show. I like everyone here. Very funny 🤣👏
What a privilege to see such giants of talent. Cliff hit it perfectly with his smart double edged wit and purpose. So fortunate to have grown through adolescence and internet young adulthood watching Johnny ❤
One of those where you go: That one's dead. That one's dead. That one...wait let me Goggle Flip Wilson.
Flip flipped a long time ago.
@Charles Philip Adams Yeah. But it is just the momentary lack of recall that sends mec to the phone cause it was just long enough t ago and he was around my age..
I remember very fondly coming home from work just when he came on and being excited to see his guest for the night. It does make me feel my age, but those were the days my friend.
What a power house 🏡 👊🏾🙌🏾😂
Groucho was just funny. Always the shortest way to the biggest laugh with him.
Good way of describing Groucho.
Groucho more than anyone was one of a kind priceless
'Whatever it is, I'm against it'..
To think Rickles lasted them all out into modern age . He was like a bridge to the old comedians and new lame ones 😉
Don was one ☝️ of kind just plain Best ever
Imagine Chapelle and These slate
@MrRayden6
Chapelle is a _"new comedian"_ (relatively speaking) which, according to what Nile's said, means he's lame.
@@aberamagold7509 The golden era comedians were much funnier and didn't need vulgarity in there lines. They also had class and didn't whine about their contracts.
@@aberamagold7509 He's right, Dave Chapelle is pretty lame.
Imagine a day and age when folks would actually gather together to insult one another out of respect, and for the pure joy of laughter in the entertainment! And best of all, nobody got offended!
Even Johnny left Groucho alone.
Time goes by so fast. 📺
Of that whole group I think Dick Cavett is the only one still alive. (But, to quote Groucho in another context, "It's early yet").
This is a treasure. Thank you so much. Laughing all the way
Glad you enjoyed it
Years ago these guys didn't have all the fancy glitzy lights and special effects they have now. They had to get by on talent.
Wow this is one of the classic, earlier roasts, I can't remember one earlier than this, with the greatest comics of the 20th Century. This was a great honor for Johnny, particularly with Groucho in attendance, who was probably performing in vaudeville before any of the others were born. Great classic stuff.
Thank you for showing us this special t.v. show honoring Johnny Carson. ❤
We ❤ love seeing this!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for sharing this video with us and I can't believe where time has gone. It seems like all of the sudden, all or most comedian's and actors are gone and I wonder if I should have watched them more often when they were alive. Luckily there's TH-cam.
I find it fascinating how there’s really no cursing and or anything lewd when they are telling there jokes here. If anything i see it as the time period where the punchlines didn’t have to relate to the audiences to be funny. The enjoyment i bet was so infectious and genuine with enough talent to make anyone grin like an idiot 😂if they were stuck in the same room back then.
Damn millions turned to BILLIONS WATCHING ❤️🔥💯
It was taped for 1968 television. I think a private event would've been a bit more blue. Probably not to a huge extent, though.
Ed's bit was great. You never see him go after Johny
Luv Johnny Carson too……this is the first time I have seen Don RICKLES smoke….cigarettes…lol…🫢💕🥰❤
Ed Sullivan, I'd like to thank you for leaving your crypt to be here...😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
47:42 , 2/14/23, 4 PM. They only thing I’m mad at Johnny about is he spoiled any night show comics that stood in his place. He is really one in a lifetime talent.
I love these 😂 Don Rickles laugh 😂😂😂 is the best !!!
The whole roast was hilarious!!
Absolutely amazing to see all of this phenomenal talent, in 1 big room; having that much clean fun! Today? We have nothing. If you did manage to round up some of America's top comedians, for an event such as this ; could it be kept clean so a family could pull up a chair and watch it together? I know Jay Leno, Tim Allen, Steven Wright, Jerry Seinfeld could easily pull it off; how about the rest?
Bill Burr can do clean comedy that's hilarious if he needs to
Definitely check out Dry Bar Comedy on You Tube!! There are a lot of hilarious comedians on there, with no vulgarity or sexual mess. They all perform in Utah. You'll be glad to discover them!!
Always a pleasure
This is fantastic comedy
Odd that Johnny in his final words didn't mention Flip and Groucho. They were my favorites. Flip pointing out the state of affairs and Groucho jumping in when ever he felt like it.
He did say ALL..
Regardless of the show, Groucho would interrupt-- at least the shows I've seen.
@@fredkruse9444, that's gotta leave a Marx..
@@fredkruse9444 Check out some of his appearances on the old "What's my Line" shows on TH-cam. Just goes off on his tangents, completely fractures the entire show, and has everyone rolling in the aisles. Including host John Daly, who is always under control. Marx just had an incredible feel for making people laugh.
Greetings From Florida 🐬 Thank You ✨ for Sharing 💕 this Roast 💥
very funny! Thanks
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Johnny before about 1970 in color.
There are a few color clips of his 60s shows out there still.
We Baby Boomers were a truly blessed generation! From childhood onward, we were gifted with the finest and most talented group of actors, actresses, dancers, comedians, etc., Via "The Greatest Generation!" What more could we have asked for?!
Never seen Rickles smoke before
I think he quit shortly after that. Didn't smoke long.
ED got roasted hard lol
Both Eds
These old roasts were hilarious, yet warm-hearted. They weren't at all like the cringeworthy, vulgar annihilation festivals that pass for comedy roasts today. Sadly comedy today reflects a loss of humanity. It's not funny because it's just about being mean-spirited. Hopefully, talented comedians who are also decent human beings will rise up to fill the void.
Well Said
Amen to that
You will love the Dry Bar comedians on You Tube!! There are several and there's no sexual or vulgar content in their shows. They are so funny! Let me know what you think, after hearing some of them!
You're certainly not wrong about the dramatic changes in acceptable behaviors/styles across generations, between the 55 years between this roast and current ones. Both old and new are funny, but what's acceptable behavior/language are night-and-day different. But what is tasteful/acceptable cuts both ways... and not as one-sided as you suggest. Yes, our modern speech/behavior is sadly more crude now. But the modern world is also much more tolerant and equitable than the older era. We've righted many old wrongs, and somehow mostly avoided the world wars of the 20th century. We've made great advancements in human rights and quality of life. So its not as one-sided worse as you suggest. At age 70, I lovingly remember all these great comics/roasts, but I also still enjoy the modern versions. Different? Yes. Better? Questionable.
These men were Giants of Entertainment & we will never see the likes of these Guy's again. Shame look at the junk we're stuck with 2DAY
These guys are extra mean but nice at the same time nothing but love for each other
AD very enjoyable Thank You
It's awesome seeing all these greats together too roast one of the greats.
When I was young I thought "the good old days" statement was stupid. Now that I am old I can only say that I lived in the good old days.
Don seemed so nervous
I wonder if Johnny's secretary had to show her knees to get hired lol
Dick Cavett is one of the nicest guys ever. Love ya Dick ❤
DON RICKLES IS RUTHLESS!!!
Once you start Groucho, like the Rolling Stones, he never stops.
Groucho not that funny, lest he has a female foil to bounce jokes off of. W.C. Fields from that era was funnier. Watch W.C. Fields Ping Pong.
And Mae West was funnier than both. That wasn't the point: Groucho would run off five comments to one sarcastic Fields barb. Differant pacing. Grouchy tended to preen after his hits while Fields deadpanned. Matter of taste and styles.
Those were the days
Groucho was way ahead of his time
Groucho was the funniest one up there.
First time l see Johnny's wife she's pretty.
"He could be the mayor " 😅
Why Groucho the most respected? Play this again. All of these people were a study in greatness
Lindsay was a gorgeous man.
Flip Wilson, funniest man alive
Eh..so-so..
So, so much better than the crappolla editions they spew out nowafuckindays.
johnny carson for president
Why not? We have a re-animated, stumbling, bumbling, stuttering cadaver in the White House anyway... 🤷
@@stillnotwoke Go somewhere else to spread your shit!
@@stillnotwokestill better than the last guy who only loved himself
Groucho Marx killed
if you did not know any of these people, you would not know this show is like 55 years old now,
I wonder where Jack Benny is?
Rickles, so funny watching him break up. This was an earlier roast than the Dean Martin era ones. In those, every guest sent a few racist jabs at the black guy. A lot of times they gave it back, and in some ways it was great. But Nipsy? He was cool, never gave it back, just so smooth and clever in front of the camera.
Ed Sullivan goosed Don Rickels!!! Great!
I never knew how much he looked like George Bush...
Instead of the hug, as a sign of respect it seems comedians of the day would softly touch the side of the head with the left hand. Johnny gives Ed Sullivan one, then Ed gets two more on return to his seat from Don Rickles and Grocho. (For Rickles and Groucho it was more of a thanks for the material) 30:24
These roast were funny not vulgar, crass, disgusting and pathetic. These were people who kept it classy and funny. Can we get that Mayor of New York back??? How about any of the comedians??? These were glory days! ❤❤❤❤❤
Dick Cavett is the only one of them still alive.
