    Gary Lineker was a 'no-frills' centre forward. He knew what his strengths were and focused all of his energy into being the best centre forward that he could possibly be. His skills should not be underestimated. He was, probably, the most accomplished striker of his generation. 48 goals in 80 appearances for England says it all.

Gary linaker whether at Barcelona or Tottenham.. would be in the box and had a 6 sense where the ball would be and would score.. he wasn't technically as gifted as gazza even Chris waddle or Glenn hoddle.. but he would win you game's.. and the guy scored a hatrick for Barcelona Vs real Madrid.. Alan shearer top class striker world class.. but he won one league medal.. could Alan shearer have went to Barcelona and adapted and scored goals there.. mark Hughes similar player he couldn't he couldn't adapt to Spanish football.. but in England like Alan shearer in his prime mark Hughes was top class.. but Garry linaker could do one thing score goals.. kinda like English inzagi not technically gifted.. not going to pick the ball up from his own half and beat players with skills and tricks.. but in the box he was deadly and all he cared about was learning how to put the ball in the back of the net.. and every club linaker played for he scored goals .. 43 goals in 80 odd games for England yeah guys forget linaker was a world class goalscorer but Alan shearer was top class aswell but only played in England and Blackburn was his most successful time in football

    My point of view alone: Lineker could drag a team across the line single-handedly during his time. He single-handedly thwarted Cameroun's aspirations in the World Cup when the rest of the team were not really doing much. @@alexh442 I think you've hit the nail on the head with Kane. The Spurs midfield is so average that Kane feels the need to drop back and help build the play. He did the same for England against Italy. If he had a decent midfield behind him, he'd score way more goals. I reckon if he ends up at Chelsea, United or City, he'll win the Ballon D'Or. It's not "effort" with him. It's about playing him and keeping him in areas where, with the right people behind him, he can bang goals in every game.

I suspect that good defences can handle him, but he's not even a threat for Spurs at the moment. At 60 something and with a severe limp I would still fancy my chances of getting on the scoresheet against San Marino. He needs to be scoring in the big games against good opposition, something he has just never really done.

      @Andy Butler Yeah. Statistics never tell the full story. In a sense it is often a bit redundent, and I cannot understand the full on throttle obsession with them in the modern game. They only give one aspect. To use them appropriately and more accurately you'd probably need to do a far more detailed anlaysis than just Wiki goals to games ratio.
      For example; comparative data with other strikers at the time, pitch quality, assist statistics with team members over the years, number of minutes played and number of goal scoring chances, opponent data... it goes on.

    • @lotuseater7247
      @lotuseater7247 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Andy Butler Well exactly. To rely on statistics is not enough in claiming things, except what the statistics claim and the potential anlaysis this can lead to. With Pele we can say that he was the most prolific scorer of his time. This is a fact. But how we want to judge his prolificy on the merits of other teams, players, and contexts, is another question entirely. And whether being the highest goal scorer means you are the best striker is also another debate.

    I read something in a magazine nearly 30 years ago, when Lineker described Shearer as "a better player than I ever was". He was right then, and right in this interview. Shearer had much much more to his game - could hold the ball up, free kicks, score from outside the box, he could cross the ball, and he could handle himself against rough defending. Lineker was quicker and arguably more lethal in the box, but Shearer was a far more complete footballer.

    Shearer was competing with Sheringham, Fowler, Collymore and Ferdinand for his place as top England striker, and he won hands down. Lineker didn't have so much competition for his place but he would've been the clear choice any way. Both great players. With better luck and really top flight managers, Lineker would've reached at least the semifinal of the 86 WC and won the 90 WC. Shearer and England really should've won Euro96.

    The idea that Gary puts himself down when Barcelona bought him at a time when the only foreign players you would have in a squad would have to be utterly ridiculous and talent above that of what was being produced domestically. It’s similar to Bale joining Real Madrid. The fact that Florentino Perez, a man insistent on the best players for the best team ever, picked a Welsh Tottenham player to take the RW spot in a front 3 with Ronaldo and Benzema. Out of all the talent, the fact that it’s a British player from the Premier League must mean he’s just that good. And on that level, Gary was that good.
