    I love the style, one thing I find with tall trees is that in 20 years, the proportions look very typical as the trunk and the canopy grow much larger. The shorter trees get very stubby looking with age. I think the tree will continue to get better as it gets older, exactly what you want with a bonsai! Great pot and tree combination too.

      Thanks Nigel, yes as this tree matures it is becoming more interesting for me, perhaps because I have threatened it on several occasions. The canopy needs to develop a little taller too. The danger with this style, in my opinion, is neglecting it for a little too long and branches become too thick. During the growing season it needs to be observed quite closely and of course fertilising and watering needs to be monitored.

    Yes, that is a very elegant tree--mission accomplished. Thank you for presenting it to us.

    A very relaxing little video. Thank you Terry. Your elegant Zelkova reminds me of a similarly straight White Stinkwood that I have. I considered growing it for 5 more years in the ground to thicken up before I chop the trunk, but seeing this video I might rather try a straight broomstyle as well. It would definitely be the least drastic way to go. Please do release more videos. I've grown quite fond of them. Greetings from Potchefstroom!

      Thanks Carel! Celtis do look great in the Broom Style. However for broom style as I mention in the video, you must have a good radial root system all at one level (so your material either needs to be from cutting or layering) and then the trunk needs to be as straight as an arrow. Thanks so much for your very kind comment, it is my intention to keep producing more and knowing people such as yourself benefit from them certainly fuels this ambition. Many thanks and take care!

    I really like it. It reminds me of various types of eucalyptus, which grow tall, slender trunks with a broom habit at the top

      Thanks so much Sean, I appreciate that. I’ve not seen eucalyptus in that style. I’d like to see that

    I have a wrigatha religiosa same style and all my bonsai club members are telling me the same thugs you were told. I keep refining the tree and I think its awesome. Great to see your tree and it’s amazing.

      Thanks for sharing! That's great, don't mind what others say if you have the vision of what the tree can look like one day. Be true to your vision.

    Hey Terry, I love your videos! It just so happens that I have that book as well and have some zelkova seeds stratifying. I had read the article and knew I wanted my seedlings to end up looking like Mr. Kano’s broom style trees. Your video confirms my thoughts on how the trees should be styled so here I go!

      Wonderful! Go for it! They do really have a very elegant feel which I think it highly suited to the species, not only the very butch, squat form of broom style.

    Beautiful video thank you for informations
    Broom style looks simple but it's a very hard one
    The trees need many many years of training to start getting what we need
    Beautiful tree it will be more and more beautiful year after year

      Yes, I can definately agree. There have been times I have considered burning this tree. Its difficult to keep branching fine so you do not lose the delicate feeling. But I am getting the hang of it and as you say, it is starting to give me a better feeling than before.

    This is a very beautiful tree, it feels to me like a almost tropical /rainforest trees. Like those that you can see from very far away! I spotted a couple of kapok trees in a shrub in our spar's garden. I can obviously see they were not planed to be there. I might go ask the manager if I might be able to take one out or hopefully both! What you did with this tree is more or less what I had in mind for the trees I spotted! Do you think that might work?

      I have seen the zelkova in this style growing wild forests in Japan many times, which is why when people mock me about the length of it I just ignore them as they don't know better. Sure, get permission and then at the right time of the year remove them. When they are growing well start with the styling process and see how it goes. Good luck.

    With cutting back some of the primary branches quite "hard" ... would you let the "new" secondary branches grow freely, to thicken up, before also cutting them back hard ... or work already on the finer structure (tertiaries)?

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Elbie, the new growth would need to be allowed to extend to thicken up as you wrote. The rest of the tree would be worked as normal to maintain ramification

    Hello, I am now dealing with a zelkova, that actually, although smaller, follows similar shape. I am doing it as a broom as well and I read that you can tie a rope around all the branches to get the shape during the winter. What do you think of this method of getting this shape? Also, as of the this moment, beginning of December, I still have all my leaves on the zelkova, should I remove them so that the tree is allowed to rest? I even see that the new ones are forming (pimps? Or how are they called?) I live in Belgium, so it is already around 0 degrees, it is always indoors as well. Looking forward to your response

      Thanks for the question. The Japanese bonsai professionals have been using the technique you describe for a long time and it works just fine on young branch structure but once set then you won’t use this method any longer.
      I am unclear about where you are growing this tree. It sounds like you are growing it indoors in which case it is difficult for you to create dormancy conditions. For deciduous trees I would suggest you allow them to rest and go dormant by being exposed to cold weather or they will become weaker over the seasons. Removing the leaves is a good idea, but only once they begin to change to autumn colour.
      Hope that helps.

    Interesting tree... love the broom style. Ive some Zelkova saplings grown from seed sown Dec 2019, germinated spring 2020... i have approximately 40+ left after selling some this year. Im in the UK and going into late autumn towards winter.
    I have many tell me I should be putting 'movement' into the trunks - S shapes - and "buyers want the S movement...". I'm not a fan of that although I have put such movement into the thinner trees this September.
    I'm now considering putting a few together - possibly 8? - as fusion in broom style and also forest groups as, presently, no-one appears interested to buy... thinking 3 groups of 8 fusions and the others in forest group. I'd be interested in your opinion on the possibility of doing such, intending for spring 2024. Appreciate if you reply 😊

      Thanks for sharing Frank. The Zelkova is classically grown in the broom style, do the s-bend with elm if you want. But either way it’s up to you, not them.
      I don’t have experience with fusing this species but based on their healing ability I would say it won’t work, but give it a go if you like and let me know how it goes.

    • @FrankEtchells
      @FrankEtchells 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TerryErasmusbonsai thank you for your reply and the information about healing. I'll still have a try just out of curiosity... I've enough to play with and don't have enough room to bring all of them on individually except maybe as forest groups.
      I'll certainly keep you updated. Personally I prefer the natural growth instead of forced twists etc. so i'll be removing the wire... hasn't sat easy with me since doing it.

      @FrankEtchells I think forests would be great too! From a commercial point of view you can create something quite sellable in little time using young material.

    Very interesting! Thanks Terry, question Leaf pretty similar to the Chinese Elm could I do this same work on that while our CPT Winter is in full swing?

    • @TerryErasmusbonsai
      @TerryErasmusbonsai  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question Wesley! Yes Zelkova behave the same as Chinese elm in my experience. You need to act fairly soon as they will begin growing shortly if they haven’t already.
