As someone from Brazil I feel the same.
Once I dropped and lost my weading ring on the street and then suddently 5-10 strangers were helping me find it until we found it, then everyone celebrated it and went on their way. Would people not help me if that happened in the US? That feels weird for me lol

I spent quite a bit of time in Spain a few years ago. I was in La Corũna, Galicia and lost my wallet. Before cancelling my cards I backtracked to the places I had been and was told I should check the police station as someone had PROBABLY handed it in. Rightly enough, a woman had found it on the street and brought it to the police station. All cash and cards intact. I was blown away as in Ireland where I am from the chances of that happening would be slim at best. I love the Spanish.

The Goya District is one of the nicest and wealthiest neighborhoods in Madrid. You might not see the same behavior in other parts of the city. And throwing water on tourists in Barcelona is not hospitable. But this is not to denigrate the Spanish. Their civilization and its connection to Italy and Austria comprises a large portion of the plinth of Western Civilization. They are an intelligent, dignified and talented people who have made our world richer through art, design and literature of incomparable beauty. But they are human and their history is as gruesome as their neighbor's. Spain had its problems in the 20th Century as it struggled to find a way to incorporate a republican process within their monarchical heritage. They succeeded to a large degree but still face many challenges. The world would be a better place with a rich, financially strong and influential Spain. They are not living up to their potential. I wish them success!

The Second Republic came about through a fraudulent voting, followed by a social crisis where people would be raped, hanged from bridges and fired by being conservatives or catholics, hence our horrible 20 century. It is not that we need a monarchy, but just need to avoid political extremes, otherwise we become apes.

Hello, I live in a quite humble district in a city other than Madrid (Málaga) and I can assure you that, if a person falls, especially if he or she has grey hair, several people will assist that person, take care of his or her things and accompany him or her for as long as necessary. It is a cultural thing, not an economic one.
Barcelona's problem with tourism (or Malaga, which is what affects me personally) has nothing to do with the hospitality of a people. The problem, because it is a problem for us, is the extreme dependence on tourism as a source of income. Neighbourhoods that were once populated by locals have now been transformed into hives of tourist rental flats (Booking, Airbnb, Vrbo, etc.). Strangers, who have no connection with the local population (and who can't afford to stay in a hotel), moving in and out of your block, littering, making noise at inappropriate hours and driving up the rent for people who live and work in the city.
Tourism has always been welcome in my city. It fed families, enriched our economy, brought new ways of seeing the world.
With globalisation and cheap travel, my city has become a theme park. It is no longer a city, it is just another franchise where you can see the same shops, the same products, the same advertisements. It's a place where they try to make the most of the tourist's money and offer them an increasingly artificial experience. Everything becomes more and more impersonal.
Now I can't drive my car through half of my city, because "it pollutes and is noisy", but every day I see a different giant cruise ship, which pollutes like thousands of cars, moored in the harbour.
Tourism is the new dictator and we, the citizens born and raised here, are the new slaves. Wealthy people buying up properties and businesses, getting richer and pretending to integrate into Spain, while we have to move to the outskirts to continue rowing in the galleys.

This is funny because although i see where you're coming from, in my experience this has nothing to do with it being Spain or US but instead on how people are raised, and actually more of a city vs rural areas thing.
I am from Madrid but I lived in Indiana for a bit and I thought people there were super kind and caring about each other. I was in a very christian rural area and the sense of community was something I had almost never experienced in Spain. Although I do think you're right and people in Spain in general care so much about each other and I think this comes from the fact that Spain is a traditionally christian country, so I actually would say people are friendlier in more religious places, which can also be found in America or any other place in the world

People in the USA, like a good protestant nation, have their work as the center of their lives and everything it is based in a constant question that you hear when you meet somebody "What do you do for a living", They have enormous pressures to do financially well in life, they need to keep up with the joneses and if you don't do that well, you are considered a loser. Nothing to do with a Christian Catholic and collectivistic country like Spain in which family, leisure time and life enjoyment it is a priority. Every time that I take family and American friends to Asturias, Cantabria and Castilla y Leon (Areas where I vacation) They can't believe how friendly the people are, the security, infrastructure, the very low prices, the magnificent monuments, the internet connection, the scenery and although our country has a lot of work to do regarding jobs, work opportunities, upright mobility we should all very proud of what we already accomplished. If the labor market in Spain was a lot better (Our Achilles heel) Spain wouldn't have 93 to 95 million visitors like is going to have this year but 150 million visitors.

As an American also living in Spain, I have never seen this happen before. From my experience, Spaniards are very friendly and talkative on the surface, but quite cold and distant on the inside, it's kind of a false cover. It's hard to get close to them or integrate with them, even if they are nice on the surface, and after getting shunned for a while, the nice surface stops being believable and you just feel alone.
Obviously everyone has their own experiences, but from mine I have the complete opposite view of Spain that you do. Don't get me wrong, Americans are false and superficial too, it's just different HOW they're false and superficial. Unfortunately people are people, they're the same everywhere just in a different font. You can't just move to another country and find better people, they kind of suck everywhere (and that's okay, because some of them are amazing and you just need to find and hold on to those people).

I'm from Spain and i get what you mean. I think we are not rude and will not (generally speaking) purposely leave people alone in a hurtful manner, but we are very closed and for me one thing is a "colega" who I can call to have a few beers and another thing is a "friend" that is part of "my people". Maybe it works because here everyone has these kind of relationships but I understand how it can make you feel alone if you don't quite get inside the "friends" circle. Hope everything goes well for you!

Weird. I'm from Spain and this country has made me actually lose faith in society. There is no respect for the common good, everybody thinks that being loud, trashing, vandalising and breaking the law are acceptable behaviours and it doesn't matter if others are affected. We have a traditional mindset known as "picaresca" which means that cheating or being unlawful is socially acceptable if it benefits you in any way.
When I visit other European countries I see so much order and respect for things and each other that it makes me sad to think about Spain.

@vonBottorff It's not about capitalism at all. People are super envious here or try to take advantage of you. It's about lack of respect for work because people are systemically underpaid and living costs (rent, food) are artificially kept high. (I'm also from Spain)

@vonBottorff believe it or not, not everything in the world is related to the USA. The Spanish mindset has always been like this, it's just more apparent now because of how fast and connected our society is.

The US hasnt had the atrocities of the "great" socialisms of the 20th century. Its a matte of direction beouse there are, of course, those who want to go in the direction of disarming the public and getting rid of individual rights.
All constitutions were made to guarantee a minimal rights for individuals. To protect them from the state. Socialism tries to achievements for the revolution or society at the cost of those rights or dignity. Why would they want to copy Europe?

When I moved to Spain, Alicante, with my family not one single person of the “urba” welcomed us. After two years we still haven’t been invited to any of their parties. The only contacts we managed to make are with Germans and Italians.
If you compare with the USA every country gives You hope for the society😂. But if you want to feel true hospitality go to the south of Italy for example.

Yep, it's a complete myth that we Spaniards are open people, you can easily have a chat with anyone everywhere but we are very closed people, socially speaking, I'd say as much as Norwegians or Icelanders. Gaining friendships in Spain is like kind of entering a sect in which a member of the friend group typically introduces you to the rest, I'm never getting used to that feeling. We even got a word for someone going with a group other than their own, so imagine: «emperchao»

Then again, if you work in the US as a shelf stacker and something drops from the shelf onto your foot you will get fired the next day because you don’t show up for work since you went to see a doctor. And since losing your job means losing your insurance you will be bankrupt once you get the tens of thousands of dollars in hospital bills.
