    The Boatman
(Sìne NicFhionnlaigh, arrang. J. Ferguson, 2016)
    Dm @ 2, 3/4 138 bpm
    V1.
    Dm C Am
How often haunting the highest hilltops
    C Dm Am
I scan the ocean, I search the sea.
    C Dm C F C
Wilt come tonight, love, wilt come tomorrow,
    Am Dm C Am Dm
wilt ever come, love, to comfort me?
    Chorus:
    C F C
Fhear a bhata no horo eil'e.*
    Am Dm Am
Fhear a bhata no horo eil'e.
    C Dm C F C
Fhear a bhata no horo eil'e.
    Am Dm C Am Dm
Oh fare thee well, love, where e'er ye be.
    V2.
They call thee fickle; they call thee false one.
They seek to turn me but all in vain.
For thou art my dream all through the dark night,
and every morning I scan the sea.
    Chorus:
    V3.
There's not a hamlet, too well I know it,
where you go wandering or sit a while
but all the old folks you win with talking
and charm its maidens with song and smile.
    Chorus:
    V4.
Do you remember the promise made me:
the tartan plaidie, the silken gown,
the ring of gold with thy hair and portrait?
That gown and ring I will never know.
    Chorus:
*Pronounced: “Eer ah VAH TAH, no ho-ro aye-lah”

Because this song is sang in the maidens perspective alot of the covers are female. You just brought this song into a new light, great job!

In our culture men don't sing this. It sounds odd a man singing it. Also our women would never sing it in English as the translation removes rhyme and pun.

We also sang & posted this song, but honestly yours is more traditional-sounding, Jesse. Really grand! I sang in Gaelic, while Jim sang in English, with a less mournful tone than is usual. We love your vocals!

I couldn't stop myself crying. It is wonderful when the emotion is conveyed entirely through the sound without any acting. Beautiful.

With those same words the song could be found in the songbook of the Greater Hartford Folk Music Society. So now I see it comes to them from Silly Wizard!

Jesse there is certain songs that suit your voice and it is these style ballads! Take or from an Irishman living in Scotland. Lol .... I thought your performance in term of sincerity was outstanding in telling this story . Keep up the old Irish versions as well check out Garg Og he is especially sincere and powerful as a Scotsman singing Irish!

Gaelic/Gaeilge is a bit off but not too bad. But you're not meant to sing it it is meant for a woman. Try Oró sé do bheatha 'bhaile lots of guys sing that.
