This is the best spirit making video by far. Glad I found it. I've watched a tonne of still it video and this has answered all my questions. Now I am going to avoid the sub humification I hope. Well done guys.
that cloudiness in the stripping run comes from the oils that are distilled together with the alcohol and water. they form an emulsion, thats what makes it cloudy. just let it sit and the oil should separate to the top but some emulsions are a bit harder to separate.
Great video with lots of good info for a newbie and experienced distillers all on one video. I definitely saved it for future reference. Have you thought of a list of the different descriptors to help us make cuts?
Thankyou soo much for the Knowledge, This is the Most Informative Step By Step Video that i have been able to Find showing everything from Mash/Wash to Temperatures like Heating up and when to slow down, what to look for, all the way to tastes & smells & cuts during still run and then to final cuts to separate the “Good Stuff” lol then to Proofing Down. I was looking all over trying to learn it but nobody has such an informative video like you guys provided start to finish, thankyou.
Endlessly amused at Jesse asking about just using the backyard hose and forgetting that in most of the world water straight out of the hose actually tastes disgusting. How blessed we are to be from New Zealand
I don't distil but I love how knowledgeable you are, I have friends that are wanting to learn and I plan on sending them here as you cover everything a beginner needs to know and watch for I love it. Keep up the awesome videos. Have you ever considered trying to distil guavas? Might be interesting
Quick Question: so thats what a 30L/8Gallon Still, How Long Did Each of the 3 Stripping Runs take from Starting to Boil to Tails Finishing for the 1 Pot of Wash?
"A moment of silence for the whiskey that could have been..." That's what I was thinking when I saw the grain bill!!! BUT, vodka does lead to some great other spirits...
@@mckwilly By stripping out most of the flavour with the method of distallation. Using a pot still or a couple of bubble plates would have made a great whiskey.
Have something to add about leaving product uncovered overnight to "air out" Make sure you don't have a dehumidifier in same space set to 30% relative humidity 😂 I'm optimist, but my jars were half empty not full the next day
Once you proofed the vodka you said the taste will get better over the next twenty days. During that process do you need to keep open to the air or can you bottle immediately with the same result?
One more thing When large quantities are mixed together it raises temperature of products then it throws off the hydrometer. Use calculator and add that amount of water instead of using hydrometer to see if you are there
Yeah, Jesse is great. Solid description of running reflux for max ABV neutrals but it is an abomination to do this to a whiskey. Double pot still whiskey instead. Now go toss 1/2 of a vanilla bean in a bottle and fill it up with that vodka. After a couple weeks toss it into the freezer. You can thank me later.
Imperial measurements are fine until you get to the whole mass vs. volume thing. If I say 2kg sugar in 10l of water that's 20%, but in imperial you can't say 4lbs sugar in 20lbs water, because they don't do water in lbs. It's gallons. So my example would be 4lbs to 5.3 gal water so 4 to 5? It's still 20% but doesn't look like 20%. It's crazy to say Add 10 pounds of grain to 6 gallons of water, because if it's 10 to 6, you might be thinking that there's more grain than water in there, but it's not the case. In metric it's easier when saying 4.5kg in 23l. So you can immediately see it's like 1 to 5 ratio and there you go.
Third I guess who cares. I never understood the potato vodka myth. Russia is too cold half the year to harvest potatoes and they do grow a lot of grain so..... And you need breakfast every day. Vashe zdorov'ye! Or na zdarovye. Both seem popular. Nice video guys.
Greetings, my bearded friends. You can cover the tank, for example, with a blanket. You lose about 300 watts thermal energy on a bare tank. From Russia with Love.
I personally dislike parrots because they smear the distillate; making it harder for a beginner like me to accurately gauge cuts. Is this something I've fooled myself into due to what I've read online, or is this really a thing?
I’m loving these collaborations. Some really great info.
As a long time Stillit subscriber, this video took me back to the early stuff from Jesse's channel. A great watch.

Good question. I would use 190 Distilled spirit and soak stewed fruit for 3 weeks in the alcohol.
Lots of great information in this with the Q&A.

It felt really weird watching a non Jesse video in a Jesse environment :D Great video!
First Love the vids, and the system. Yall got me into the hobby. Just made my first Hazy NEIPA and it came out amazing
Thanks guys. This is genuinely fantastic advise. Really engaging.
Could a still be ran off solar power?
Speed not an issue.
Anything can be run off solar power if you've got the watts
Awesome entertainment for me. Always curios how to make things like this even though I cant make anything like this.
Really appreciate this
Damn good guys, thanks! Thoroughly informative!

Elaborate on "could've been" where in the process did potential to be whiskey stop ?

why does Kyle look exactly as Glenn Howerton (Dennis Reynolds from it's always sunny in Philadelphia)?

Well you've basically redistilled it again using the dehumidifier as a condenser if you think about it;)
Thanks for the Master Class…
What would i need if you use 8 gallon stainless steel still pot with copper bubble column, to brew BEER ? Is it possible?

I bottle with the same result. The flavours meld and it smooths over time.
You were not sober during the sripping run...I know, I've been there. No liquid vapor!
Can I get a list of those equipment?
What was the strike temp?
Fascinating video that helped me realise I don't want to do it for now 😂

One can often use vanilla as a background note. 😅
Just simple, when in tank temp 92-92.5°C - stop process, not more 93°C!
Vacuum distillation would capture more fractions
I watched dozens of videos before someone said to not throw out the 4 shots because you can use it as a cleaner or stripper.
Most people say to throw it out, I think Jesse is one of the first and few that I’ve seen recommend use as a cleaner.
This makes me so want to try distilling so bad. Too bad we can’t be “trusted” [taxed] in the States
That local convenience store has the most delicious giant sausage rolls
im a newbie at best... but the "crud" in the stripping run,,,, im going to say its from the butter

Imperial measurements are redundant in any context where you have to waste time converting units

No. Don't use a parrot on a spirit run.
