Imagine being Litvinov, throwing that brilliantly and being second. Both of their techniques are so different but so pristine to watch. The speed Litvinov generates, it’s incredible he he even stays inside the circle. And the fact Sedykh could generate that power and speed off three rotations … What masters these two were
I always love watching old records like these that are still standing, granted this was an era where countries put a lot more time and resources into building up their national athletes, it will be interesting when these unfortunately less popular sports are able to grasp onto some of the modern techniques and tools that have benefited other sports like baseball, basketball, and golf to help optimize their training and conditioning to see how far the post can be pushed.
in every sport pretty much athletes now are better than older generations. Because of Better training methods, better supplements and anabolics. But how come in this sport the new athletes can never beat this world record which has been standing tall for so many years now?
I think the incentives aren’t there. Financially the money Sydich would have recd and the full time support versus guys now choosing to chase the dream versus making a living if you fail (or even if you succeed). Taking nothing away from this man who is my all time hero.
Nah not by far man. Look at athletic records, some stand strong for 20 30 or even 40 years, it's not just hammer throw. To name a few: Discus (1986), Shot put (1990), Long jump (1991), 400m hurdles (1992), Tripple jump (1995), Javelin (1996), 1000m (1999), 1500m (1998), Womens 100m, 200m, 400m, high jump (all from the 80's) And to not forget the longest standing of them all - women's 400m by Jarmila Kratochvílová set in 1983
You could have just said "Steroids" instead of telling him to go find a particular book and read 3 specific pages from it in order to figure it out lol
Rest in peace Yuriy and thanks for the memories

And he finished the greatest ever series in the history of hammer throwing by reaching 86.62m in the final round.
He died relatively young. RIP. What an amazing athlete.
RIP Great champion
I almost burst into tears watching this. Was there ever a greater athletic performance?
I remember reading about this competition TAFN and shaking my head. How was it possible? It's 2023, and his record still isn't broken.
Steroid built

Why has no one beat this yet
Steroids have been banned
One word; anabolics.
Because they are not as good
