Great Job in taking something that may have had to been replaced and made it operational...Its sure better to get in there and try and not succeed then not to try and scrap it when all it needed was a bit of TLC...Keep up the projects...You had nothing to lose by tearing it apart and looking at it...

I got one just like your's in the same condition. I could hardly move the handle. When I took it apart I found the same hard grease and grime. I cleaned mine but I was not sure about removing the base. Now that I seen your video I will redo mine. Thanks for all the good information. Also thanks for the comment on the Briggs on Life Support.

Looks nice. Sometimes you have to take a measured risk to do something others say you shouldn’t do.

Pretty dirty. Another item on my list. I made my first aluminum milling chips today. Was awesome!! That turned out really nice on top of restored functionality. Great job.

I've got a 510 that looks like the one in the video. I'd like to remove the handle shaft so I can clean it, but I haven't figured out how to remove it yet. It *looks* like the bearing insert is retaining the shaft, but the insert appear to be pressed in from the outside of the case, with no obvious way to reverse the process. Did you remove the shaft on yours, or just clean/lube it in place?

keep it oil filled. make a RTV gasket, to seal the case. Also, a polycarbonate or hdpe thin sheet between the top and the magnet, will make it not rub metal to metal, and therefore work smoother. Keep an eye out for any blister pack large enough (product packaging)as a source of the thin polycarb.

You are correct. It should have oil in it and not just a thin layer. I read it's a good idea to remove the chuck occasionally and flip it upside down while working the lever. I guess the idea is to coat the top of the magnet and the underside of the top. Makes sense to me. I have a 6x12 walker I'm screwing with and trying to get it to stop pissing oil everywhere. I think I over filled it. Heavy gear oil or way oil would be the best. Some say just make sure it's non detergent so the epoxy holding it together doesn't fall apart. Whatever that's worth. :-)

Every wire wheel ive used for the last 30 years has thrown wire from it except for the really heavy twisted Knot kind

Havent finished the video yet, but If your going to replace it I'd go with a electric chuck, so much better for getting bow out or parts and getting them truly flat to the world
