It’s amazing that this thing works at all. Most of the magnetic flux, which you’d like to have concentrated just above the surface of the ‘chuck’, is instead shunted by the all steel top plate. I suggest you investigate why real magnetic chucks have alternating magnetic and non-magnetic material construction, then try again. A for effort. D for design.
Hello. I used 12 volts and 12.5 currents. It got too hot after 20 minutes of operation. If I lower the current value, would I use it longer? Will I experience a decrease in my usage power? How much current should I use at most?
old video i know but hoping ya respond, when you pull out the first bit of copper spool with the white and black cable, is that just a hot and ground , and that's it? and you run it to a on off switch and that is all there is to that ?
Your gonna have 3 coils of wire on a mot, the primary which plugs into the wall with the larger diameter wire, a short 2 or 3 turn coil and the secondary with a whole bunch of turns of smaller gauge wire. The secondary will probably have one wire with the other soldered to the metal core.. the primary will have the 2 terminals which one to the load or hot side and other to the neutral or grounded side of an electric outlet or in this case for a magnet you hook the load or hot to positive and other to negative of a dc power supply or battery.. if you run the negative side of the power supply to a ground than the neutral side of the coil will need to go to that same ground whether it be the work or something but needs to rout in a loop .. but on/off switch would go on the hot or positive side wire to cut power on and off...
@24v its gonna take as many amps really that it wants.. its just like shorting out whatever power source you put on it.. like a big resistor.. a 1500w resistor more or less..
The name of your channel is "Joe the Builder" but if you keep doing what you do at time stamps 2:07 and 2:29 you will end up changing it to "Joe the Blind Builder"... That happens just for that dummy which belives if they has a machine they are BIG profesionist and yes, i never had something in my eyes because i'm profesionist and i know how to work.
for fuck sake guys. you act like it is your eyes he is using. who are you the fucking safety police? its not like he is telling people to not wear glasses my God. I wear glasses but it's my choice. he's young we all did stupid stuff when young. people repeating the same comments over and over gets old. go build yours and by all means put on your glasses. but stop being a ass wipe.

Hi Joe, Beautiful work keep it up! I tried to build a magnetic chuck like yours, it worked beautiful on the bench with 12Volt DC strong enough!! but after I finished welding the top plate {water + welding) I let it dry for two days . Then I tried it and the magnet lost its magnetism by 90%. Any idea why? Thanks Jim P
No i dont know why The magnet was NOT strong enough on 12 volts probably because of the water and welding so I turned it up to 24 volt and after 30 min of use the coil burned and didn't work anymore but don't know why sorry 😐
Hello Joe. what side of the transformer did you use. the primaryside with the thin wires or the secondary winding with the thick wires. It would be good to know as you inspired me to make something alike.. Thank you
primary has the think wires and he used the secondary.. but it would last long if you use it for more than a few minutes without current limiting, the current draw would be huge on this thing
+Harry van Niekerk : actually HomeDistiller, it's the primary he has used, if the secondary was used it would probably negate the heat issue you speak of that this death trap will suffer from. Harry : do not copy this, it's a woeful design, and a death trap.
Not suppose to have metal welded or on the open end of the electromagnet unless it's holding it, kind of defeats the purpose. You most likely lost 70% of it's strength. Good idea though.
So what would the result be if we make a gap on it as an insulator instead of welding it on an electromagnet, and attach the rest of it with a steel plate? Using steel surface instead of epoxy would have the advantage of increasing durability.
An important ingredient of a magnetic base is the flatness
Awesome. Fast. Easy. Thanks!
All that welding heat didnt short out the coils? Figured would have melted off all the varnish and short its windings all together...

You're absolutely right.
E for effort, A for aurtograph
:D
That's what I was thinking
Good way to catch all the sparks!
If you know. İf you have experience. Could you share fine poles type electro chuck repair?
how much voltage you have used

12.5 amps will heat up anything pretty quick.. lol
How much is it the voltage and the amperage you put in
Why did you make the box for the magnet so big? Couldn't you just build the box as big as the magnet?
Great build! Loving your channel

Thansks !!!

i found the voltage 24 v... what amperage are you running at?

Dc or Ac?
Copper has a very high melting point so keeping coil in water shouldn't effect it
The coil is actually made of copper plated aluminum
Either way water plus electricity dont add up to anything good.. maybe baby oil or mineral oil ..
You could have used the high voltage coil for working from mains voltage. You would not have needed a power supply.
Thank you so much for the 1000 subs
If you have any suggestions for upcoming builds leave a comment please
Joe the Builder please make some homemade weights for weight training
I have a suggestion, try narrating the video. Do away with the music and talk!
Can you tell me the operating voltage

What fucking drilling you make to be necesary glasses??? For grinding i understand but for drilling??? Especialy on bench machines.
Nelu Nicoara apparently you’ve never had a bit snap or had a shard pop? People are giving him great tips, don’t be an hero.
That happens just for that dummy which belives if they has a machine they are BIG profesionist and yes, i never had something in my eyes because i'm profesionist and i know how to work.

Nice work ! Turn wire speed down for better profile!!
This is great! What is the voltage applied to the coil?
Luiz Cesar Savi I use 24 volt
Joe the Builder Thanks!
So this will hold a piece of metal whilst you grind it. The vise will do that!
Not if you want to surface grind it. That is why companies make and sell magnetic chucks!

Ok Joe. Thank you. I shall try again. Jim P
Gomaa - insulation on the coil failed.
that's awesome keep up the good work
BTB PRESENTS thanks bro

You should make a mace

hello my friend!! Thx for the video, I making one here hehehe. please tell me something, my coil was warming, its normal? Ive using PC supply. Regards
Gabriel Pierri I think it is okay that is it is a little warm
I used 24 volt and it got so hot that it burned together and doesn't work anymore 😞
Thought that metal was gonna grab and slit his hand open at 2:07
very cool!!!
A for ingenuity A for effort A for results F for not clamping your work while drilling.
I think was just for show. Whatever........
Super !!!!
You should see if there is a machine shop nearby and they might be able to surface grind it for you to make it very flat cool build though
Glasses if you want to see when you get older
When drilling
Is not necesary if you are a profesionist of drilling operation or know a litle WTF is that.
Wrong design. All magnetic force is neutralized by steel cover plate.
Dobre ale po co ci to ??
super cool build bro !!! but water + electricity (welding) heuuuuu 😅😅😅 it's a little dangerous no ????
S ideras
Thanks man
I don't think it is that dangerous I dry the coil before use
Joe the Builder ok thanks ;) I know you already have one but you can build a knivemaker belt grinder like a kmg ;)
This video is so noises
Hey, now just make a surface grinder out if it
Третий сорт не брак😆
