    23:35 "Still her boss. Still inappropriate." He's also the one who, in a previous episode, we learned that Skyler had called "handsy" when talking to Marie about him when she'd worked there before, so she can't claim ignorance now!

    The transition from Skylar and Ted to Walter drilling in the screw was pretty symbolic and easy to miss.
    BTW building codes make wood frame houses every bit as sound as homes made out of bricks or stones. We've come a long way in 200 years.

    Home architecture in the US tends to vary massively, for a bunch of different reasons. Often times it's due to climate and environment (areas of the country that are at sea level usually can't have basements in their houses, in the South you see houses with colors and materials that absorb less heat), sometimes it's just due to which immigrant groups settled in an area when coming to the US, building what they know how to build wherever they settled.
    Where I live, it's pretty rare to have even been in a house in the US that didn't have a basement, so probably you want to ask someone from the Southwestern US. Where I live, middle class houses rarely have built-in pools. Also, it's pretty typical in I think most of the US, especially in towns/cities that were built up slowly over time, for most streets to have a pretty random assortment of houses made in different architectural styles and using different materials (probably most are wood, but brick is extremely common).

  • @bigdream_dreambig
    @bigdream_dreambig 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Some houses in the U.S. are on "slab" foundations where they simply pour concrete straight into the ground, but many have raised foundations like Walt's. I prefer those because 1) there's a tiny bit of spring to them so they're more comfortable to walk on, 2) it makes it easy to run utilities under the floor (like plumbing pipes and electrical wires), and 3) the floor stays warmer in moderately cold weather because it's harder for the cold ground to suck the heat out of it.

  • @bsansovich
    @bsansovich 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    That's the thing about walt. One minute, you're sympathetic towards him and , The next, he is a massive douce. For walt, it's all about ego. He is the definition of hot and cold . As far as houses go, I'm not an expert, but I know that most houses here in the U.S. use wood frames, but they are usually just as sturdy as European brick foundations as long as the cross beems are intact.

    37:10 Houses in America are made in wood for a very simple reason, it's cheaper. Of course that's not great because of termites, but this is one of the primary reasons they're usually elevated ("on stilts"). It's also partially because of flooding, since wood and water don't mix particularly well. It's definitely possible to have "rot" in wooden houses, but it's not something that happens overnight. Very likely Walt's house was an older house that had already been lived in for 30+ years at least when they purchased it. That or maybe Walt was just looking for an excuse to disobey Skyler wanting him to stay in bed and do nothing. ;)

    • @WPA33SC
      @WPA33SC 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The only reason he was having to take care of rot is because the water heater was leaking and had been for awhile. It was limited to the flooring around the room where the water heater was located. The rest of the house was fine.
      Skylar even mentioned it to Hank in Season 1. It can be tricky to replace flooring and supports after a house has been built. Even so such a small area wouldn't cause the house to collapse.

    My favourite thing about "Stay out of my territory" is that from those other guys perspectives, they probably think Heisenberg was powerful enough to track them down, instead of it just being a random encounter. Especially when he mentions that buying everything at the same place attracts too much attention.
    Old guy shows up, tells you everything you're doing wrong to show he's an expert in this line of work, tells you that you're attracting too much attention, then tells you to stay out of his territory...
    Since they seemed so intimidated, that must be how they interpreted the situation. It just makes Heisenberg seem even more dangerous and powerful than he really is, channelling his inner blow fish.

    This episode is about Walt marking his territory. When Skyler was making that speech saying that Gretchen & Elliot paid for the treatments Walter was ready to explode. He was thinking it was his hard work that paid for the treatments. That's why later when he was drunk he was so angry with Hank and how Jr looks up to him and said "my son, my bottle, my house". In 0106 Hank even tells Walt at his school "you got to keep better watch over your turf". The brand of paint at the end is ‘Kilz’ and it’s white paint- meaning he’s killing the White name officially, including his family and the foundation of it. (there is major symbolism in Walt building that trap door himself to the dirt crawl space) Trading it for instead- his Heisenberg identity. The episode is even called Over. As if it officially dies here. "This is the exact MOMENT Walt becomes HEiseNbErG" Leaving the paint behind at the store instead of purchasing it. He tried to mask his itch for cooking but he feels fulfilled as Heisenberg, which is obviously alarming- “No deep seated issues there” -Saul. Leaving behind his mundane old life for the rush of living out his Heisenberg Fantasy.

    21:20 -- RE: Building Codes and House Foundations; A: Full disclosure, I'm no expert but the average temperature and general climate plays a huge factor in whether a house will have or need a large and dense foundation. If the average rainfall is very high or very low, foundations tend to be limited to a couple of long and strong posts or piles made of wood or metal, thus keeping the inside of the home dry and also cooler since air can get under the house. In the same way, roofs have a kind of vent to allow some air exchange for humidity and temperature purposes. [edit] Upon reflection, I'd also bet there's a strong correlation between the existence of a foundation in a structure and how far North or South of the Equator it is. Above 60 degrees N or S latitude, the ground may remain frozen for most of the year and digging a foundation for support and stability an unnecessary amount of labor. Again, this would mean a house on stilts, posts or piles.
    And a funny related side note: have you ever heard about the "EarthShip" style of house which purports to be environmentally friendly? There's a documentary or two about them which explains how they avoid using concrete foundations in favor of recycling old rubber tires and compacting dirt inside of them. These inner load-bearing walls are often given some kind of direct exposure to sunlight from the south, meaning, they absorb an incredible amount of heat and if the owner / builder of an EarthShip isn't quite careful they could easily cook themselves inside the structure with the radiated heat from these foundation walls.

    The thing about Walter in this whole episode is the following: in the previous episode before he found out that he has more time to live he has done a lot of bad, morally ambiguous stuff in order to provide for his family in case of his death and he was so sure that he was going to die soon that in his mind he had to rush up into making as much meth as possible. He had his whole mind occupied with the thought of gathering as much money as possible through illegal measurements and then he thought that he could finally die peacefully only to find out that he actually freaked out for no reason and had more time to live. He realized that he was going to live the rest of his life knowing that he has done some bad shit and he didn't know what exactly he was going to with his life. Another important point is that deep in his heart he loved the thrill that he was getting from living a dangerous criminal life and the fact that since he had no more reason to produce any more meth, he was going to have to give up living that life and this realization let him down a little bit. And to top it all, he've just produced over a million dollar worth of metamphetamine. The question is, what he was going to do with all of that stuff?! He had no choice but either sell it or keep it somewhere or get rid of it and both these last two options were very risky and an unecessary struggle. Going back to how he loved the thrill of let's just say being Heisenberg, you must to remember that Walter previously to his discovery of having lung cancer he was living the life of a loser. He was deeply dissatisfied with his life, had a lot of regrets from not having a fullfilling life and he became a shadow of his former self when he was living off his gray matter company's business with Elliot (the now Gretchen's husband). All of this concerning his life previously to his lung cancer is very important to explain why Walter was acting so aggresively towards Hank. The thing is that nobody was treating him seriously before he got the lung cancer and that includes Skyler, Walter Jr. and especially Hank. Hank was making fun of him all the time, he was condescending to him and didn't see him as being very manly/masculine. At that party when he was pouring alcohol to Walter Jr.'s cup, he couldn't stand seeing his son looking up so much to Hank (who was talking very proudly about his exciting life of being a DEA agent) instead of him. All the anger that he has gathered throughout his life from having Hank acting like an alpha omega toward him and having Walter Jr. being more impressed about Hank's lifestyle and attitude than that of his father has literally exploded/burst out at that party, hence why he acted so confrontational toward Hank. Then concerning the rest of the episode, as you said yourself, Walter had the urge of having his mind occupied with other stuff other than living the criminal life so when he saw that guy in the hardware store trying to buy stuff in order to produce meth he got his thrill of being Heisenberg back to him and said "fuck it, I'm going to go out acting like a badass and be threatening toward whoever was trying to make meth business in my territory!!!".
