  • For years, I've been using the One-In, One-Out Rule to slow down my consumption, simplify my life, and build savings for bigger, boujier purchases. But I've discovered the rule works even better when you flip it!

    "Junior Varsity Minimalist" is the term I never knew I needed. LOL
    I need to do this with books. But it probably needs to be two out, one in for me.

    Another tip I read somewhere that can help with shopping impulses is checking out books from your local library. It gives you the satisfaction of "shopping," but at the same time benefits your library as well. :)

    Thanks for the food for thought. This might serve me well not just in slowing down purchases but also as a boost to get rid of the things in my to donate, etc. piles. I'm someone who keeps getting stuck at the "sorted but not actually out of my house" phase of decluttering.

    Hey Ben,
    I was already troubled by the many things I don't need in my house and your video triggered a closet purge.
    I'm far away to play minimalism in any league yet (a baby, a toddler and a wife thats not fully onboard yet) but I love simple rules like this one. Planning to stick with it for clothing and maybe do the same for my books... although thinking fast and slow (and nudge, and a couple other on behavioral science) are sure to stay.
    Greetings from Brazil! And thanks for the insights.

    I’m trying to replace things once they break or become too out of date and useless. Whichever happens first
    Rather than buying something and then trying to figure out what to get rid of
    That makes sense to me
    If it’s an item like a stuffed toy or something and I’m sure I want it in my budget, then for right now I have so much junk I could probably get rid it two or three items first. Which I might do.

    My wife and I struggled with this. I am a minimalist simply because I can't stand clutter. That was my up bringing. My wife on the other hand came from a family of hoarders. You can see the struggle there. Also, I am a huge proponent of "buy the good stuff once instead of the cheap stuff multiple times." So, tell me more abut these t-shirts.

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I feeeeeel that. I'm married to someone who has a similar repulsion to clutter, so it's a little easier for us to reach consensus.
      I've been doing the merino wool thing for a few months now, and I really couldn't be happier. As long as I hang it up each night, it always smells fine, it feels great, and it's actually pretty temperature regulating. And most companies that work with merino wool put a lot of care into their products (and seem to care about the environment too!) - I'm not sure you can go wrong with any of them.
      Right now, I'm actually doing Wool & Prince's 100-day challenge with one of their sweatshirts. If I wear this shirt every day for 100 days (and prove it with a picture a day), I get another one for free! 😁

    Over the summer I got rid of more, cheap clothing, than clothing items I brought in. I just don't want to have too much, it feels overwhelming. Also, they didn't fit like they did pre-pandemic, lol. And since I was not buying as many little random cheap clothing items, I was able to save up in my clothing sinking fund enough to buy my Strathberry, 100% cashmere, thick and fluffy (not that thin stuff), full length poncho, which I love! Now to get rid of the mostly acrylic, unattractively-pilling poncho I had before, as I don't even want to wear it anymore. Should have done it like you said, got rid of that first! But here's a real question. What if I get rid of a decent (not falling apart) thing I already have before getting something else that I think is better. But when I get the new thing, it's not as great as I thought it would be? Now I have a not so great thing, that maybe I have to return, and I don't have the decent thing I at least sort of liked before, because I got rid of it? How will the world continue to turn while I look for a replacement?! Love the cute sketches, btw.

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That is the risk, isn't it? And that very thought is actually what makes One Out, One In such a powerful slowing mechanism.
      If you're trialing something, you could always designate the old thing as being "in limbo" (put it in a box with other donation items, for instance). If you're happy with the new thing, then you can get rid of the old thing; if you're not, you can return the new thing.
      A little bit of prompting upfront still feels pretty different from just acquiring something and changing your wardrobe retroactively.

    If you don't wash after wearing, how do you know when to wash? Is washing T-shirts that bad? I have so many questions.

    • @YNABofficial
      @YNABofficial  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Faaaaaaair questions!
      Everybody in this space is different, but I usually wash after either (a) some big spill, usually thanks to my toddler or (b) it's just been a while. (I'm not kidding when I say how odor-resistant this merino stuff is - it's nuts!)
      Washing does wear down clothes over time, and tumble drying is even harder on clothes. Since I want these to last as looooong as possible, I actually hand wash and air dry my shirts to reduce this.
      (And I actually... kind of like the ritual? To me, it feels way more calming to hand wash two shirts than to manage a whole load of laundry. And I'm reaching a point where, in theory, I could hand wash my whole wardrobe without too much hassle.)
      But my main reason for washing less is that I HATE when I'm reaching for a piece of clothing and it's in a machine somewhere. 😑 Especially since I want to just wear the same outfit everyday, I wanted something that wouldn't need constant laundering.
      Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. 🙃
