The former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan made a very short sighted comnent re semi conductor chips during his separate intervew with Rahul Kanwal. Raghuram downplayed the importance of semi conductir chips for the Indian economy. Look at the small country of Taiwan which has become world reknowned because of their manufacturing of chips. Yes, the number of people directly employed in making the chips may not be extremely large, but the ramifications of availabilty of chips made in India will be immeasureable to the thousands of industries in India that would rely on the easy availabilty of chips.

For example in pharmaceutical field, despite India being a dominant supplier of formulations, not a single New Chemical Entity has been produced till date.Similar is the case with crop protection field. We have not produced even a rifle like AK47.All our defence equipments are imported
All talks of indigenisation of defence equipments is eyewash.Take the example of mich talked indigenous LAC Tejas. Its engine is of GE make and entire electronics is imported. Our politicians are masters in making great Policy Documents without implementation. The reason is that our education system has collapsed and until education is accorded top priority, we will not be able to produce talent.Consequenyly, we will go on producing Policy Documents only.

Most of the phones, evs use lithium ion battery which require lithium and cobalt as raw materials. India doesn't have enough reserves for both. Cobalt mainly comes from Congo's artisanal mines which is whole another issue of Human rights exploitation. India needs to invest in R&D to explore other possibilities like Sodium Ion batteries, as Sodium is not a rare earth metal and is abundantly available everywhere. CATL a chinese company have already developed Sodium ion battery successfully and plan to mass produce it in 2023. India should also focus on Sodium ion instead of lithium ion

I really hope what the minister is promising becomes true.
The track record in India is however very poor. Most engineering education institutions in the country are a farce (anyone who has gone through them can support my comment). To create talented engineers overnight, to support a high-tech sector is very difficult. Our engineering college teachers have rarely done any engineering themselves (in a National level conference with around 500 professors from engineering colleges from around the country, I had asked if anyone in the audience had designed a full project that worked, and there was no one !). This is like you are teaching in a medical school, but you have never seen any patient in your life ! Engineering culture (in countries like Japan and Germany) is something we are very far away from. Even in IT, the number of people who are actually capable of doing world-class coding is very few and sparse from within India. It is full of mediocrity.
Talking of the semiconductor industry, our attempts decades ago (to set up SCL - Semiconductor Complex Limited near Chandigarh) resulted in a fiasco. With all the hype in solar energy, there is hardly a lab or industry that is actually working on solar cells research in India. And talking about power electronics, well the less said the better. We are really lacking high quality engineers in the country, in this field. We do not even manufacture elementary components, not even in optics and crystal growth.
So, although the minister was sounding convincing to the world delegates, the reality on the ground in India is very difficult. We will need years of systematic and dedicated change in our culture to do diligent work before the dreams of being a world-leader can emerge. The average IIT-ian is no exception, and is always looking for short-cuts, and away from being diligent. I thought I share a few cents of my views having been involved inside out in the Indian electronics industry and R&D institutions for nearly four decades !

Even India can't make their own chips until US want this to happen as think of it how KIRIN hisilicon was stopped that they could not make their own chips US company (ARM) just stopped providing architecture license is this the fair practice as market is open should be open for all Intel, Amd, Exynos, snapdragon, mediatek, apple bionic chip as these players are being getting the license but Kirin stopped & suppose if any company started from scratch for making their own architecture then they would have software compatibility issues as no software developers would be making (operating system) software different programs (APP)
U.S.A was knowing Huawei is the only Chinese company of their compition & they knew how to stop them by different means still no 5G smartphone from huawei because snapdragon & mediatek stopped providing 5G chips fact is Huawei owns most of the 5G patents but they could do nothing
Why USA wanted to stop the growing supremacy by dirty tactics Compare out the camera quality of 2018 Huawei mate 20 pro vs 2018 iphone xs max
2019 Huawei P30 pro vs 2019 iphone 11 pro Max
2020 Huawei P40 pro vs 2020 iphone 12 pro max

Third time's a charm. India failed in 1982 and 2006 (Intel wanted but govt. failed to make laws and amendments on time) when India had a chance. This time I hope India does well.
FYI - There are 3 semiconductor plants investment plans already by ISMC, IGSS ventures and Vedanta-Foxconn. 1 in Tamil Nadu, 1 in Karnataka and Gujarat.
There is a huge difference between misleading and failure. Lets see

I mean.. iphones are manufactured in India which is a testament of this government's business friendly policies. He is not misleading, he is just sharing government's blueprint and foundational elements.

@@adityajoies No. Iphones getting assembled in India just means that it's a concerted decision by the West to pivot away from China.
Vietnam, mexico and indonesia are the main beneficiaries of this pivot, while India is only getting tiny scraps thanks to Surrender Modi. Thank you for attending my TED Talk.

India will not become a semiconductor supplier.
After 9 years of jobless growth thanks to Surrender Modi, it's safe to say India has now become the world's largest Jumla supplier.
If you don't believe me, just ask the millions of Indian youths who are victims of Surrender Modi's economic blunders and are giving up their citizenship every year. The proof lies in the pudding.
