In the context of the video, the "This still has brains on it" at the end sounds like this visit to the gem room turned into a very, very brutal heist really quickly.
"Amethyst used to be very expensive but..." *looks at piece of amethyst we bought in Brazil for around $20* "...then they found a lot in Brazil and the price plummetted"
I have been watching these all day, and my favorite thing about it is Emilys totally unbridled enthusiasm for absolutely everything, and that watching these visits with other scientists you can see them getting more excited about stuff as she shows her excitement
Who wouldn’t be enthusiastic to see the Gem Room? Emily’s excitement is exciting in itself, but the natural beauty, and the artistic flair of these exhibits are breathtaking!
I mean, anything in that museum is equally priceless, it's just that society says that fancy jewelry must be an extra special kind of priceless because we see it on kings and queens and celebrities. I like his attitude of appreciating the artistry of the pieces and the beauty of the stones, but aside from that it's just minerals with interesting physical properties. I get Emily spazzing out about wearing the necklace, though.
I love that the guest host has a great sense of humor even when being responsible for such a collection. Major props to The Field Museum for getting involved with this channel!
Can we have more videos of him talking about gems? I've been interested in gems and crystals for almost a decade (not enough to go out my way to actually learn learn, but just interested)
Lance Grande seems like such a nice man! I hope we see him again on the Brain Scoop soon! Plus seeming Emily wearing a $250,000 necklace was, well, priceless!
This is the great thing about the Field Museum adopting Emily and The Brainscoop. We get to meet people like Lance Grande and Jim Louderman (from the insect videos) who are incredibly knowledgeable and fascinating to hear from.
The brainscoop should do more geology. I love it, and I definitely think this is one of the best videos so far. There should be some explanation of the formations and structures of the stones, if you did gemology again, though.
They must have some serious security on that room. Thank you Brain Scoop and Mr. Grande for showing us some of the gems! They were very cool to see. Maybe at some point you could talk about the science behind gems, or how they're mined?
The most entertaining part of this is how they're handling collectively millions of dollars in gems like costume jewelry, and store it in ziplock baggies in a drawer. People always feel like everything in a museum is delicate and fragile, even if it's something as strong as jade or diamond. It's nice to see people get hands-on with these kinds of artifacts.
Heather Hsu Are you the same Heather Hsu who gave the donation which originally gave the donation that let the Brain Scoop go to the Field Museum because if so, you're awesome. DFTBA.
I love how you guys are expanding the approach of this channel to a museological one. From doing dissections and zoology to anthropology and everything that involves the inner workings of a museum. Keep up the good work!!!!!
This was AMAAAZZZZIIIINNGGG! The diamond and garnets in their natural form were really mindblowing, I would never have expected them to form like that. Those garnets were so perfectly formed, why did anyone ever think they should start cutting them up. Jeez, humanity. This is such an awesome video, I never thought we might be able to explore other areas of the museum, it's so exciting!
***** That is the idea, but it is very much debatable wether the so-called "imperfections" of natural gems are necessarily bad. It depends, I suppose. Jewlry is nice, but a gem in a "natural" state has its own wonderful charm.
***** I am well aware, since not only have I seen jewellery before but several pieces were also featured in the video. My point is that we as a society don't value these natural forms, "shaping, shining, and refining" is not necessary to make these gems beautiful, its primary purpose isn't really to make them look nicer, it's so people can wear their wealth. People think gems looks better in their "refined" and cut state because we associate them with wealth and status, they are more beautiful to us in that form because it's what we as a society are used to. It's the accepted form of beauty. Personally, I think these gems look far more beautiful in their natural form and I have absolutely no desire to wear them in a "refined" form. Sure, they look gorgeous in jewellery, I'm not condemning their use in jewellery, but I get more joy from my little chunk of natural amethyst than from my garnet ring. They're beautiful in all forms, but we shouldn't forsake or dismiss the natural form of something so incredible just because it wouldn't look good in a necklace. I wish there were more gem displays in museums (there's none in my local) so we could learn to appreciate not just the natural form of gems, but appreciate where they have come from, and how, and the processes they go through to become a trinket. I think a lot of people take the gems they see in jewellery stores for granted, and they shouldn't, because they are amazing objects created by our earth and we don't stop to think about how crazy it is that they are these naturally occurring deposits that we have decided are beautiful and have given immense value. We should allow ourselves to be awed by the natural creation and formation of gems, and avoid looking at them only to think 'it would be nicer if it was a tenth of the size and surrounded by silver, and on my neck'. Gems are more than just jewellery.
I really enjoy these episodes where an expert just chats with Emily about all the cool things they enjoy and love. This is why I love science so much. It's just so exciting!
omg more Gem room please I love the uncut ones everything is so beautiful. also I love how your comment section is actually smart comments pertaining to the video.
It makes me happy that you guys are branching out from biology/zoology. I really like that kind of stuff, but seeing all the diverse things the Field Museum has to offer is great! Keep on branching out into new things.
This is probably my favorite segment to date. I love rocks. The slinky gold necklace was very interesting, as was the gold chainmail bag. Also, we need more shots of Emily being glamorous. Try on all the jewelry!
I am so happy BrainScoop did a section on the gems at the museum! Whenever I go to the Field Museum, I always spend so much time in the gem rooms! It's really cool to actually hear more about them! THANK YOU!
The smaller pouch with it was probably used for coins that you would use to toss onto the stage if the performance was remarkable... Almost like tipping the entertainment also.
I'm so upset that H&M don't have those earrings anymore :( All of the staff we've been introduced to so far have been so funny and informative. You can just tell how amazing the museum must be. I can't wait to go one day.
I have to assume that you went through some pretty strong security systems before getting into that room.. The room doesn't seem like much for a place that holds millions of dollars in jewels and precious metals. I hope it's well protected!
Wonderful! the backrooms at the Field offer endless entertainment highlighted by the witty descriptions. "I feel pretty" and the Fortress of Solitude discussion were enchanting.
The gem room is always my absolute favorite part of the museum. Especially before the revamp...I love the openness of the new room, but the old, quiet, dark one with the bright lights contrasting the dark velvet just seemed to fit much better with the shining stones :)
woah! awesome! i would love to see a part 2 of this. I find the uncommon stuff like that gold purse and the uncut gems so interesting. It just shows the craftsmanship it takes to cut and polish these things.
I love minerals -- and I love seeing behind the scenes at the Field Museum. Thanks. Oh -- and as for the gold purse -- that dates to the time when, if a lady went out for the evening, the man who escorted her would be expected to take care of everything. All she needed was a lipstick a handkerchief, and possibly coins to tip the maid who worked in the ladies' room. Different world.
I finally got an answer as to where Emily got those awesome earrings! The nerd value of the earrings makes them more valuable than the majority of the gem collection, I think.
Love this. The Gem Room always fascinated me as a young child & still does. I can see the beauty even though I rarely wear jewelry. BTW, as I remember, they used to have a lot larger section devoted to displaying the gems back in the 50's & even 60's. What I love best about being a Field Museum member is the annual members nights when you can go up in the attic & see things that aren't normally on display & listen to presentations about the work of the staff. This channel is the TH-cam version of that! Love it!
That low quality emerald is freaking awesome, the deer are also pretty cool on it. You see so much tacky pressed plastic nowadays that the natural rivulets and forms in the stuff actually look more impressive :)
Oh wow. I watch the brain scoopy videos in the name of learning, event if they're a bit much for me. But this is my jam. I was super into rocks and gems as a kid. Also, jewelry! pretty.
This has to be the best episode of the Brain Scoop so far, it was really very interesting. I love your typical stuff, that's why I've subscibed, but it would be even better to reach into other areas of science from time to time :)
This is the best, most goosebump-inducing thing I've seen since visiting the London Natural History Museum a few years back. The tourmalines, swoon... Yay gemstones!
This was so much fun! But then again, all Brain Scoop videos are. The only thing is that this video felt really shaky and kept moving all over the place. Gave me a little bit of a headache. I can't wait for the next video! The Brain Scoop always brightens my day. :)
this was such a cool episode! I've never been interested in gems or jewelry so I didn't think I'd enjoy this one as much as the others but it was so interesting to learn all of these things.
When I took a week vacation to Chicago, I spent two days at the Field Museum, and the second day was spent almost exclusively in the jade exhibit and the mineral exhibit. It really brought to life what I'd been learning in my geology class to see so many uncut samples. I couldn't have been happier!
I think I want to drive the four hours from Indy to Chicago just to go to this museum... and then spend the night for several nights so that I can see everything. Emily, your job is freaking amazing!
This is SO awesome! It's like getting to visit the Chicago Field Museum, but from the comfort of my own home! The gems are lovely, and I hoep we see lots more videos from Emily and her team. Thanks! :)
This gem man was so dry and yet so simultaneously humorous and passionate, that's some real real good stuff there. I also loved that moment of connection over Superman. So good.
My mum's a gemologist and seeing this was cool. She really loves gemstones and it's nice they're getting recognition for more than just being in expensive jewellery.
For some reason I wasn't expecting to see so much jewelry. I expecting it to just be raw uncut gems. Thats Emily now I have to go learn more about this! :D
I love how casual this guy is about these priceless gems. He's so cool.
Because it really is just a rock that someone says is worth $.
I could watch this guy talking about gems for hours
I've watched this video on repeat for hours. He has got to be one of the coolest dude in the whole Field.
4 years later and I couldnt agree more, hes awesome
In the context of the video, the "This still has brains on it" at the end sounds like this visit to the gem room turned into a very, very brutal heist really quickly.
I think it is from a different video. I think I have heard it some where before.. I think..
"Amethyst used to be very expensive but..."
*looks at piece of amethyst we bought in Brazil for around $20*
"...then they found a lot in Brazil and the price plummetted"
His dry humor is perfect :) And Emily would make an adorable starlet with all that bling :D
I have been watching these all day, and my favorite thing about it is Emilys totally unbridled enthusiasm for absolutely everything, and that watching these visits with other scientists you can see them getting more excited about stuff as she shows her excitement
I've been watching all day today as well. :)
Who wouldn’t be enthusiastic to see the Gem Room? Emily’s excitement is exciting in itself, but the natural beauty, and the artistic flair of these exhibits are breathtaking!
that guy is the coolest person ever. idk why but i love how clam he is when he explains and pass priceless jewelry to emily XD
That's so hilarious "I think your gonna be on TH-cam "
PRIA ALSKAD I thought that was so funny too. the delivery and I didn't expect it from him. 😆
it was a great line hahaha i thought so too
Can we have more videos of him talking about gems? I've been interested in gems and crystals for almost a decade (not enough to go out my way to actually learn learn, but just interested)
If you ever get the chance, there is a very cool permanent gem exhibit in the public part of the Field museum that is fascinating! : )
I think this has been my favorite episode so far, just because of how casually he handled quarter million dollar pieces of jewelry.
Lance Grande seems like such a nice man! I hope we see him again on the Brain Scoop soon! Plus seeming Emily wearing a $250,000 necklace was, well, priceless!
"Your going to be on TH-cam". Lol nice ending
This is the great thing about the Field Museum adopting Emily and The Brainscoop. We get to meet people like Lance Grande and Jim Louderman (from the insect videos) who are incredibly knowledgeable and fascinating to hear from.

He clearly enjoys his job, sharing his knowledge, and enjoyed Emily's enthusiasm. Seems like a nice fun guy to chill with!
1:20 "Oh my gosh, this is my college! This is my college tuition right there."
I measure the same way, Emily, hahaha.
The guy was so cool!
Haha, that guy was awesome. He lit up like a little kid when you talked about superman. Working with those people must be really great.
It is incredible what the Earth can produce by itself. I would just love to see more of the Field Museum's gem collection.
I agree, more gem's. It was very interesting to listen to Lance.
Heather Hsu Are you the same Heather Hsu who gave the donation which originally gave the donation that let the Brain Scoop go to the Field Museum because if so, you're awesome. DFTBA.
Heather Hsu Apologies for the horrible repeat in the sentence. I really need to learn to reread my comments before I post them. (Headdesk)
Please more Lance Grande!
I'm a geology major and I don't see enough of this kind of stuff on youtube! Please do more! It is so fascinating! Thanks! ^-^
Lance Grande: Distinguished Service Curator and part-time fortune teller. Thanks for showing off some awesome gems.
Seeing your reactions was just fantastically priceless. "Would you like to try it on?" "YESSSS"
I look forward to Brain Scoop more than any other TH-cam channel I watch. It's always fascinating.
I love how you guys are expanding the approach of this channel to a museological one. From doing dissections and zoology to anthropology and everything that involves the inner workings of a museum. Keep up the good work!!!!!
I love the fact that the curator has sense of humor. Really nice episode!!!

EVERYONE WHO WORKS AT THAT MUSEUM IS AWESOME.
Lance Grande is a hilarious man! I lost it when he pulled out his iPhone, haha. I love gems so I'm really glad you did a video about them :)
Really cool. I thought it was great how kind the curator was. Thanks for showing us
Wow, that episode was a lot cooler than I thought it was going to be! And Lance Grande is awesome too.
I loved this episode. This guy was so much fun, you can tell he knows his gems and is super passionate about them. I love this show!!!
Gems! RAW and UNCUT! Coming soon to brainscoop!
Might I just say the amount of appreciation I have that the museum official understood Michael's superman reference is enormous.
It makes me happy that you guys are branching out from biology/zoology. I really like that kind of stuff, but seeing all the diverse things the Field Museum has to offer is great! Keep on branching out into new things.

I appreciate this show a LOT. There is nothing else like it on the internet.
The solid gold purse was probably used to house special binoculars used to watch operas or shows.
The smaller pouch with it was probably used for coins that you would use to toss onto the stage if the performance was remarkable... Almost like tipping the entertainment also.
I'm so upset that H&M don't have those earrings anymore :(
All of the staff we've been introduced to so far have been so funny and informative. You can just tell how amazing the museum must be. I can't wait to go one day.

I was totally thinking I hope this video doesn't attract the interest of any unwelcome elements.
Please do a segment on Paleontology! The minute detail to clean the fossils has always been just the coolest thing.
Loved him, he was fantastic! This was just so neat, I couldn't help a squee when you put on that gorgeous necklace! Great episode!
Can I just say again how much I love the Brain Scoop? Every single episode is so interesting!
i loved this one! the hall of gems or whatever was always one of my favorite parts of the field museum! also i love it when Michael talks.
That was so cool! I would love a "Part 2" to this video. I love seeing gems and jewelry and minerals in their natural state.
Wonderful! the backrooms at the Field offer endless entertainment highlighted by the witty descriptions.
Wow! That was so cool! I love that you post up so many different sciences on this channel not just taxidermy! Geology is such an awesome science!
This video is old. We need to "pick his brain" about more gems and metals in a new "Part 2" video! He just knows so much! 🧠
Yesss
woah! awesome! i would love to see a part 2 of this. I find the uncommon stuff like that gold purse and the uncut gems so interesting. It just shows the craftsmanship it takes to cut and polish these things.
I loved this video. I never thought I would see jewelry on the brain scoop. It's so cool how you show all the different parts of the museum.
Who is the person who makes the names for the positions at the field museum, cause they're awesome at their job! Seriously coolest job titles ever
I support this comment.
Omg Emily this episode was very cute with how excited you were about wearing the jewelry. Thank you for the quality videos.
I would LOVE to see more from the Gem Room!
Ahh I just love her as a host~~ She seems so genuinely into what she talks about and what the asks people about~~
The Field Museum workers are awesome :) great sense of humor and they do not mind sharing their knowledge. Kudos and thanks!
I want more Lance Grande! :)
I finally got an answer as to where Emily got those awesome earrings! The nerd value of the earrings makes them more valuable than the majority of the gem collection, I think.
Please can we see more of this man? This video was super interesting and he seems really cool!
What a lovely gentleman, I could listen to him for hours!
1) why is everybody in brainscoop so awesome
2) gold is ugly
3) I'm glad to see the comment section is (just about) a bob free zone on brainscoop
I love your enthusiasm and just absolute fascination with all of these new things that are outside of your normal skill set
gems are outrageous, truly truly outrageous
I love how towards the end of the video Mr. Grande casually mentions the iPhone 4 and "bling", completely destroying the stereotypes of old men.
Could we get another episode like this? I love geology and shiny things.
Love this. The Gem Room always fascinated me as a young child & still does. I can see the beauty even though I rarely wear jewelry. BTW, as I remember, they used to have a lot larger section devoted to displaying the gems back in the 50's & even 60's. This channel is the TH-cam version of that! Love it!
This is some awesome stuff, I'd love to hold some of these just to feel the weight and see the way the light refracts through it.
Also, jewelry! pretty.
This channel is becoming one of the things I will watch before anything else in my sub box.
This is probably my favorite episode so far, just because I really like gems and minerals. Love it! XD
OMG so cool! The Gem Room has always been my favorite exhibit at the Field Museum!
This was so much fun! But then again, all Brain Scoop videos are. The only thing is that this video felt really shaky and kept moving all over the place. Gave me a little bit of a headache.
I can't wait for the next video! The Brain Scoop always brightens my day. :)
This was such a good episode! What a unique and interesting collection, and the curator guy was so good on camera!
this was such a cool episode! I've never been interested in gems or jewelry so I didn't think I'd enjoy this one as much as the others but it was so interesting to learn all of these things.
"Diamaond is the hardest substance in the universe but if you drop it on the floor it could shatter."
Awesome
Haha, I like how the guy doesn't mind the little spots of humor. And he even knows a bit of Superman!
Also that boulder opal must have cost a truckload. I want a piece to wire-wrap O.O
When I took a week vacation to Chicago, I spent two days at the Field Museum, and the second day was spent almost exclusively in the jade exhibit and the mineral exhibit. It really brought to life what I'd been learning in my geology class to see so many uncut samples. I couldn't have been happier!
Seeing this puts all those hours in Dwarf Fortress into perspective. Here I was just stashing all my elegantly cut tourmalines away!
So good.
What I found great is that he know about Superman's fortress of solitude. The gems were cool too.
One of the coolest episodes in my opinion! Amazing. And the guest host was fantastic. Bravo.
That was awesome to see. It was Gold Chain mail and that ending/future... HILARIOUS! Thank you!!
Great episode! I have always loved to see gems in all of their forms. It just makes me so happy inside.
I knew I was a little bit interested in gems before, but now this has really inspired me to try to possibly study some geology :)
I did not expect to enjoy this episode as much as I did. So cool!
1. Best looking pieces of jewelry where Emily's earrings.
2. Emily believes she is worth $750,000 (not that I would disagree!)
Also great episode!
I find gems and their chemistry super interesting; more please!
