I get it, why that '83 is your favorite, along with the 700. Gotta love it!

Mr opferman, I have an 89 yamaha blaster that I've been trying to get running but I dont know anyone that works on motorcycles or 2strokes. I noticed you ride TSF like me and was hoping you'd be close by and willing to help me. I can pay you, but I have a feeling you're not exactly looking for a job lol. I'm in Beaverton btw. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

    From the UK

hi Jason , the bikes you speak of - the alpha 1 was the 82 mod still had internal chains and piston port in 83 which was the spider {4 speed } and the sand spider {5 speed} they went to reeds and cog internal drive , you can tell by the clutch side cover they are very different, hope this helps ,cheers , Craig .

Thanks. Yes the Alpha 1 is the 82. This is the 1983, previously this was a Spider with the 4 speed however it has a 5 speed from 1984 in it but the ratios are the same as the Sand Spider.

Thanks you are right the 82 single shock engine I believe is the same as the 81 engine they changed the carb inlet by putting a bend in it to fit the air box being the 82 I think not sure was the first mono shock

Nice shock, surprised you didn’t clean up the bike before mounting the new shock, lot of dirt and built up oil grease dirt, just what I do I’m pretty anal, with bike maintenance, what are the forks on Maicos are they Ohlins as well internally or some Maico design, cheers. Interested to hear how the new shock performs, you like both ends pretty soft? Cheers.

Pressure washer wouldn't start last time I took this bike out. The front forks on this bike in particular from a 1987 Honda CR125.

Opferman Motors Dirtbiking ah fair enough, sorry didn’t mean to be a dic or sound anal, I’m fussy as hell with my garage and bikes, oh interestingly you are using a fork off the Honda, thought it may have been Ohlins internals or something.
I dug this out, have you seen it, has a real spec sheet back when magazines did proper tests and gave you real information, not the glossy crap we get today, even bike websites tell you stuff all most of the time.
Scroll right down the page for the specc sheet, you know all this stuff anyways, interesting they ran the 490 at 50:1 ah sorry this was for the 81 490 though most be similar would think.
      Was that manufacturer specc?

The forks are pretty much the same as the stock 83 compared to the 81. I went for disc brakes and the 87 Honda had decent shocks for the era and easy to come by. I run at 32:1 always, but for the 81 the manual actually says to run 20:1 with any generic 2 stroke oil or 50:1 with Bel Ray MC1 oil or 100:1 with Maico MC GP 100 oil.

Opferman Motors Dirtbiking ah yeah fair enough re the Disco brakes and the Maico hubs were of 83 were suspect? Only heat treated once ?
The forks were air assist I understand they actually worked pretty well though, one of the first with rebound and compression? Just a shame they used those Corte & Cosso shocks, though they were alright the 81, still oh,it’s would have been the way to go, surprised the anger and used Italian shocks ( the Ferrari connection I suppose) Ohlins was expensive but it would have made more sense front and rear, it must have been a cost issue re testing because what seems to have made Maico from the get go and up until the 70s was that everything was tested at the track the pioneers of doing this before production why they stopped this seems weird unless financial and then again internal. Pity would really love to ride one. The 83 250 sounds like it didn’t have the same issues as the 500s and was one of the best that year?
I’d really like to get into some VMX racing but even Jap bikes I am interested in are hard to find.
