    We meet Pleurobot, a Salamander-like robot that can both walk on land and swim in the water (with a wetsuit!) Kishore, our new science correspondent, chats with professor Auke Ijspeert of the EPFL about how Pluerobot's movements were programmed and how biorobotics engineers studied the physiology of salamanders in making this robot.
    Thanks to Auke Ijspeert and his team for chatting with! Learn more about the EPFL's biorobotics laboratory here: biorob.epfl.ch/

      +Coffster Probably, but I was just trying to make a bad joke referencing the way the Daily Show makes everyone "senior correspondent" of X. We were joking about that off camera before the shot. Meant to be self deprecating.

  • @michaelduda4071
    @michaelduda4071 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kishore: You're a fantastic interlocutor. I can easily imagine Discover snatching you up for your own show, but I hope you stick with Tested for a while: a real pleasure!
    But every time I hear "search and rescue", I risk injury due to the violence of my involuntary eye roll. An amphibious robot that can crawl up pipes-how many use cases are there annually for such a S&R scenario? What I really see is 500 or 1000 of these beasties trundling out of the surf, their nano-coated electronics embedded in 3D-printed RDX skeletons. They swarm over the target area driven by a combination of GPS, inertial tracking and pre-loaded satellite maps. Within a millisecond of reaching their pre-determined positions, three kilotons affects the kinetic disassembly of the targeted compound, the shaped breaching charges of their frozen grins rending asunder everything in their path, softening the target sufficiently that the SEALs who quickly follow will mostly be busy administering security rounds.
    Robots are really cool, but let us not kid ourselves about where the money for further development will be going and what the results will invariably by.

    What's funny is my friends and I were making robots like this in GMOD years ago...

  • @MultiTravellingman
    @MultiTravellingman 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm thinking that swimming motion could be modified to just a tail like section that's mounted to a harness. My thought is it could allow double leg or single leg amputees the ability to swim like a bad was. Also they mentioned search and rescue options for the purpose, why not blow up the size and have it attatched underneath a raft and would allow ground troops or rescue a stealthy way to reach land by being now to kill their onboard motor and switch to robot is features. These are just a few ideas. I need a job :).

    • @LenHarms
      @LenHarms 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +B33SON1 I think giving first response as a reason for building it helps them to get funding, the government isn't going to fund a robot built for entertainment purposes. And I think given a few more generations of this, it may be much more functional for underwater rescue or salvage type missions, I don't know...whatever.
