Marjorie Finlay was a coluratura soprano; she went to music school for opera. She got Taylor into kids stage shows and theater when she was in elementary school; she died when Taylor was 13. This track is on folklore; I sort of wish Dessner and Taylor had included a bit more of her singing. You might find Style or I Did Something Bad (live) more in your wheelhouse. Or, you'd like her grammy performance of Out of the Woods.

Taylor sampled her Grandmother singing opera in this song. Gives me chills. Have a Swift day.

It's a beautiful song, but it's a little too slow and sad for regular listening, I think. What are your favorite songs to listen to on a normal day? That'll give me a better idea of what to request. I'm tempted to request Taylor, but it seems like you'll react to anyone at all, not just big names, so maybe I'll request one of the more random songs I like that I never see anyone talk about... Depends on what your personal favorites are, haha. I like so many songs that it's hard to narrow down otherwise.

@@Popz2366 Hmmm… I’m feeling super nostalgic today. I guess I’ll ask for a song from my high school days-no rush on it, but how about “Across the Sky” by Emilie Autumn? It’s especially good with headphones on, in my opinion, but I’m biased because I listened to it on loop on my headphones while on a trip to Stone Henge in high school. My first time in England.
And if you want a second request… “Anything but Ordinary” by Avril Lavigne was my jam in middle school, haha. (I guess that gives folks who are good at math a way to suss out my age, but oh well.) It’s that kind of tacky song that every unpopular kid needs to scream-sing in their room, so it’s nice to revisit as an adult and remember what that felt like. I don’t want to forget that experience, y’know? Remembering being a kid is making it much easier being a parent, for one.
You couldn’t pay me to go back, though. 😂
Anyway, if you don’t feel like listening to a song about embracing being the weird kid (in a very earnest way instead of ironic, so kids today might call it ‘cringe’), you don’t have to listen to the Avril one, haha. If you don’t connect to it, I feel like it’ll be an unpleasant listening experience. But I think you’ll like Emilie Autumn if you like Evanescence or Nightwish, although she’s got less…bite…? And more fairy dust? I dunno.
I’m sure lots of folks will suggest T Swift songs, so I won’t pile on those, I think. Have fun with it!
