But this time, it's the Jim Carrey/Tom Shadyac Trifecta. Ace Ventura director Tom Shadyac would collaborate with Jim Carrey again in the Universal Pictures movies Liar Liar (1997) & Bruce Almighty (2003), which I now suggest to you. #MoreJimCarreyForAddieCounts
There are various cultural references in the movie. The "Captain Stubing" was a reference to the TV series, "The Love Boat". The song "The Crying Game" that plays during the reveal is from the movie of the same name.

It makes me giggle that most reactors miss the "Captain Stubing" joke. Captain Stubing, of "The Love Boat", a 1970s romantic drama series about a cruise ship. Doc and Gopher were the ship's doctor and purser, respectively. Ace is saying Ron Camp's butler's uniform looks like Stubing's uniform.
My favorite Jim Carrey films not yet in your video archives are Liar Liar (1997), The Truman Show (1998), and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004).
Jim broke in with his physical comedy. But, even in a more serious role like Eternal sunshine, he was excellent. Oh, and I believe the scene after he figures out that Einhorn is Finkle is a spoof of The Crying Game.
This was originally a serious movie but when the CEO of Morgan Creel Productions wanted a mass appeal comedy Tom Shadyac who had been a joke writer for Bob Hope pitched rewriting the script which Jim Carrey was later a part of. They only spent $15 million and it had mixed critic reviews but with his role on In Living Color and the release of Dumb and Dumber and The Mask in the same year fans were hooked. Other fun things they let Jim Carrey do anything he wanted which if you see gag reels from other movies was something that stuck. Rick Moranis was the first actor they wanted for the role and they also considered Alan Rickman.

10:41 - "Hi Captain Stubing. How are Gopher and Doc? Permission to come aboard sir?" - This is a reference to the comedy/drama show The Love Boat, which aired from 1977 to 1987. Addie! You have to watch the older version of this movie. There is this iconic dolphin trainer scene that is absolutely hilarious, but for whatever reason they cut it out of the newer versions.
He was still trying to get his big break out roll from being on In Living Color (and a number of bit parts here or there). So he filmed these hoping one would take off - not knowing all were going to be absolute smash hits! He was signed to Dumb and Dumber right before this came out. The studio knew if they waited until after this was released, his asking price would skyrocket. Which it absolutely did.
Ace Ventura 2 is pretty good as well. Also, Liar Liar is a good Jim Carry movie, as well as Me Myself & Irene, and I liked The Cable Guy, even though it had mixed reviews.
