This happens in all cultures. When you have a weak minded mother that falls all apart on a heavy situation the daughter has to come up with the best solution. She's also in distress as well talking about finances that they don't have. Thank God for the friends giving her wise decision and giving her love and support.

From what I understand, medical insurance in china works in the county/province you are a resident of but in this scene, it looks like they came from another county/province and went to a city hospital where their insurance would not work.

Some families and neighbours do deserve a helping hand, some don't, one must make a wise decision, if to help out or not, that family seems to be a good family that needs help, and won't take it for granted like some other families. And like you say can make matters worse but also can can make it better, some families and people never forget the help a good friend or neighbour whether they are rich or not that lend a helping hand, some pay back without you asking in one or another. If they loan them money should not worry about to high interest 5% - 10% interest is reasonable for a year not month. And let them pay back in the time frame they can pay it all back if it's 1 year or 5 years or more ok. At least you get your money back and no suffering and worries on the poor family.
