- This is just a simple how to video for those working with tune ECU and wanting to change their fuel and ignition mapping on their KTM 990 adventure bikes. This is only to show you how to hook up your computer, and in now way gives any advice on what settings to use. Lets not blame me for blowing your bike up, K?

Great thanks a lot. I had a 07 990 Adv for almost 6 years and never even bought the cable. I changed the exhausts to Akra Evos and the dealer changed the mapping accordingly but it was fueling incorrectly and it actually was stalling dangerously while riding. Its great to know that it can be that easy. I loved that bike. I might consider having another one but the maintenance issues and the poor fuel efficiency kind of hold me back. But I do tell you. The feeling you get when you ride it, i havent had it on any other bike. It will, 98% of time, put a big smile on your face at some point.
Sorry for the boring video folks, this really only applies to people using Tune ECU for their KTM 990 bikes, not much of a help for everyone else. I had to just get it done so I can start working on the next "how to" video...............
Yes, that RPM snatchiness is usually because of the 02 sensors trying to lean out the fuel, in tune ECU, you can turn the 02 sensors off, change the fueling in those RPM ranges, and clean it up. There is a good map for your bike on the tune ECU web site done by Powertripp, you can download the map from the web site, follow the directions, and load it up into your bike ECU, and test it out. Good luck!
Some people have had trouble with loading up a new map into the bikes ECU when there has been a draw on the battery. Since the headlight comes on when you turn on the switch, we remove the fuse in order to not have a drain on the battery and keep it's voltage up to maximum.

I have a 2012 ktm adv. Were you able to tune out the surging and poor running between 2000 and 4000 rpm.
Plan to dyno it this winter.

*** What setting did you make on the virtual serial on the pc so can communicate the software with the ecu of the bike? I have alreade try same cables with yours but i can get connect...

Great video, what do you think would work better for smoothing out the snatchy throttle? A throttle tamer or remapping? I like the new mufflers you put on lots of positive comments on ADV forums, how have they worked for you? would a two into one exhaust work the same ? Better? Hey buddy!!! I think you need both really. I have a throttle tamer, and have re-mapped the ECU. She runs great now, even down low where that irritating throttle surging and jerkiness happens. I actually modified a stock map, the Akro map was way too rich, and that low RPM jerkiness was pretty bad. Remind me what year your bike is? As far as performance goes, I think either the two muffler, or the two into one is fine, and likely not different enough to worry about. I like the less weight of having just one muffler, but most people don't care about that on such a big bike to start with. The sound is wonderful on either system, and at times I've thought I actually prefer the sound of a single muffler over the duals. Tell me more about your bike buddy!

I picked a 2009 990adv with abs, it has 31000km about 20000miles, I put on 5hrs before it snowed and winter hit. The good is: new chain, sprockets, fork seals, tires, and valves were done about 3000km ago by the previous owner.
I am looking at some mods and maintenance for the winter. Fuel filters oil change. Quick connects on the tank.
Also I was thinking a: CJ oil change kit (that extension hose), fork air release valve, side stand relocation kit with dongle to stop the stand kill switch. Throttle tamer, remap for stock or new exhaust, I am still trying to figure out what is an affordable way to go. It could be cheap if I keep stock exhaust, but can I still remap to remove the throttle snatch? Thoughts suggestions welcomed.
Other bits are a thermostat switch for fan to engage it at lower temps.
Off the top of my head that is it.

Wow!! Sounds like a great bike!! One of the cheapest mods that will improve the bikes awesomeness is to buy the ECU cable from CJ designs and load up a new fuel map. I remember there was a dyno tested map for the 09' model on TUNE ECU's web site. The bike I have is an 07', and the 07' ECU is different from the 09', so my map wont work on your bike, but everyone raved about the map that is on their site, I'll have to look and see which one it was for you. All of the other mods sound great. Has it had the cannisterectomy mod done yet? If not, I've video'd it, but haven't posted it on my channel yet. It's another cheap mod that is great. Good job buddy!

Great video! :) - I am interested in getting my 07 990 A hooked up, I have just bought it and the snatchy throttle at low load/rpms is killing me. I have read turning off the o2 sensors can help?
+buaan I have an 07', and have a great map I've put together. If you e-mail me or message me with your e-mail address, I'm happy to send it to you. Part of it is turning off the 02 sensors (mid range lean is caused by that) but a lot of it is tuning. What exhaust are you running?

+MrDuhfactor Tried out your map, I found out that the US and EU bikes are slightly different. You guys have a Purge Valve for the gas tank emissions, my EU bike doesn't so it throws a P0444 code. I copied the cells from your map to my original one tho which worked fine. I got creative and copied a 2009 Adventure R map over my 2007 one so am going to check that out on a ride tomorrow :) The R map has a lot of changes compared to the normal Akra one, nearly every table is slightly different, more ignition and fueling plus the F-L map has big changes.

Do you need to reset the throttle position sensor after doing this? Is that what the 15 minute idle does?
Christopher Young You dont need to adjust the TPS, the 15 minute reset is to allow the computer to recalibrate itself.
I have the same bike , but can't connect the ECU to TUNE ECU windows ( Im runing in windows 11) . I have tried like 10 OBD wires ( i have the adaptator 6 to 16) , but no one is working . Is it about the cable ? can you share your OBD reference ?
where can i get that cable that converts classic OBD to ktm ones?

mrduhfactor, i have just "de-catted" my stock cans on my 2009 990adv. i wanted to know if i should re tune or just see how she runs without. what do you think? i chose the cheap route for a little louder pipes....
+paul moore You can certainly start with the stock map. If you find that it feels lean, or cuts out, you can add a little fuel to the stock map and richen in a little. If you didn't change the air box/filter, it's unlikely that it will change much. Good luck!

My map wont work on a 2011, but there are dyno tested maps available for the 2011, probably on tune ECU's web site...

on tuneecu web site 990 is listed but 950 is not... will it work with 2007 950 also?

How those 2 fuel tanks work?
They are like 2 Settlebags one on each side. There is a Cross-connection on the lowest point. You can fill it through one , but it's faster fueling it by filling up one after the other.

I have a decent map for my 07', if you'll PM me an e-mail address, I can send it to you. I will likely be putting my bike on a dyno this winter, and will re-map it using tune ECU. I'm happy to share that map with you when I get it done, it will work on an 08' just like mine.

No, 09' and later bikes have different cams and totally different ignition curves. People have tried it and were unable to start their bikes. Sorry mate!

tim jackson In order to tune it properly, the ecu should be in your bike with your exhaust, injectors, air filter, etc. There is a large variation bike to bike for proper tuning, so unfortunately, sending me the ecu to tune wouldnt work. You should truthfully take it to a dyno, and use their sniffers to adjust the fuel mixture until you get to 13.2:1 ratio across the rpm range.
