When I was there, I met so many Americans investigating their family. My ex’s grandfather, Vincenzo Checca, was born there steps from the main square. They eventually settled in Rhode Island.

It seems that there was a massive wave of immigrants from Pettorano who moved to the US. I personally love that they still remember the place where they were born! Did you like the town? The views alone are amazing, right?

My mother’s family left this village and settled in eastern CT!
My father’s family left Sulmona and settled in Providence and Warwick, RI.

My maternal grandfather, Vincenzo Checca, was born in Pettorano sul Gizio in 1894 and immigrated to the USA in 1910. In 1914, he returned to Italy to fight in the Italian army during WW1 (Don't ask me why.). After the war, my grandfather returned to the USA never to return to Italy. I visited Petorano sul Gizio in 2013. It appears to have changed little since my grandfather's time. My original plan was to retire to Italy when I retire at the end of 2026 as I have UK citizenship. However, BREXIT threw a spanner into my plans. I'm now planning to retire to Argentina.

What a wonderful story! I’m sorry you had to change your plans, but I also hope that Pettorano sul Gizio wasn’t a disappointment, even if it changed a little. We personally loved it a lot and we visit whenever we’re in the area!

@@TravellingDany On the contrary, the lack of change is what made Petterano sul Gizio so special.

That is also true! Have you seen the windmills as well?

@@TravellingDany No, I don't remember any windmills in or near Pettorano sul Gizio.

There’s a nice hike from Pettorano to a nearby park where there are windmills. It used to be the local “industrial area” back in the day. We’ll have to make a video for TH-cam when we go, it’s super interesting!

Janice that was beautiful. If I were younger I would want to go there. Thanks for sending. Hope you and Rocco are well.

Ciao Flo! I believe there might be a misunderstanding, we’re Dany and Al, not Janice and Rocco :) as for visiting Pettorano sul Gizio in Abruzzo (Italy), that is always a good idea!
