- Here is another retrospective to tide you guys over for one of my favorite mech games. This is peak early 2000s xbox game design. It's got transforming mechs, fighter jets, giant space ships, and weird graphics problems. What's not to love?

My university art teacher worked on that game.
That intro city where mech stomps through the city, that Orchard Square in sheffield UK.
He was quite surprised to meet anyone who played that game, and evermore so that someone actually enjoyed it.
We chatted about this game few times.
They had very low budget, about year to make this game and very little staff. He being artists had to aid with code, carry art direction and 3d model.
They wanted several more levels, more characters and fleshed out story and underground levels. With last one there was issues with engine lighting and not enough time to fix it.
a remastered one could be great

I've mentioned it elsewhere here, but if you don't know it you should look at some of the vids for a 1994 Mega CD (or Sega CD) game called "Battlecorps".
Another old mech game you might like is "Future Cop LAPD" from 1998. Check out the intro movie if nothing else. A tomato is not a good choice when attacking a mech...

MechAssault on original Xbox was my favourite game and I still hope Microsoft someday will announce remastered or backwards compatibility or even 3rd part. Should try this one
There is actually an explanation why allies is very short on supporting player's efforts to combat the enemy: there was no major conflicts on a planet until this earthlings' invasion, our allies is a police force mostly, not military, and this allied mothership, that we see on some missions, is only mothership of our allies, and it's destruction is instantly leads to failing mission even if it's integrity isn't listed as mission objective.
So we are a small counter attack force

I know this game! It was one of my favorites back when I was a kid. I'm a huge mech fan, but this one was so unique I couldn't put it down for weeks.
28:40 Battle Engine Aquila comes to mind. The problem with that game is that you play on a countdown since your allies are nearly always at a disadvantage.

@@RarebitFiends Yeah, it did, I also used to think it was console exclusive, I played it on the PS2, I looked into emulating it in 2015 and found there was a PC release.
It actually runs with no issues, you just have to find the WSGF fix for 16:9 or wider aspect ratios.

your talk about the visuals reminded me when I played this game as a kid I felt like I was playing as a hero unit in an RTS of some kind
35:28 Steam also has Battle Engine Aquila still, which is another Transforming Mech game with Large Open Maps and RTS like battles... It's also a bit more than Gun Metal at 9.99 not on sale.
27:54 exactly what was so cool about this game, seeing the AI engaging in combat, while u are the guy who makes the difference, was so fun. It gave the game a really good pace and makes this game so rememorable for me.
This video reminded me of Battle Engine Aquila. It's basically the same concept with a transformable mech and large maps where you have to support allied bots against the enemies, but in first person and with actual multiplayer. I remember playing it on the PS2 with my sister and it was pretty fun. I recommend checking it out.
Both are also ridiculous 2000s in terms of their aesthetic.
Bombing things and attacking ground targets in jet mode would be a nightmare if the crosshair was centered and influenced the camera. I'm glad the PC version didn't include that
The 6th generation had so many great games. Gun Metal also supported custom soundtracks on Xbox. Such a great game. Glad we also got the very similar and very fun Battle Engine Aquila.

Even if its aged, old, less graphics intensive, the combat where is shining till this day
Now this is a certified triple platinum hood classic. This game is way too good to be so obscure, especially on YT. Keep up the great work man!
This and Battle Engine Aquila came with my 9600XT. I remember enjoying both as a kid. I should replay both of them.
Do Phantom Crash next! I don't even know how you'd be able to play it now but Gunmetal makes me think of my old favorite game.

Omg someone actually mentioned Incoming Forces, although I played the first Incoming as a kid, that and Powerslide (made by Ratbag Games in 1998) which is a hidden racing gem for anyone into that

I just bought this on Steam for $.74 after watching this video. Nice!
It has been many years since I played this game as a kid so my memory is a little hazy, but I distinctly remember that you can allow the gateway to open on the 2nd last mission without immediately failing. A portal of sorts will open directly above the gateway and enemy battlecruisers will start flying in to attack you. You will still win the mission if you can destroy the gateway even after it is opened.
The graphics look like the game Tribes. With its expansive maps and low polygons.
Have you played "Battle Engine Aquila"? It came out around the same time as GunMetal and is very similar, but also very fun. Classic TPS mech action.

5:35 This and Battle Engine Aquila both start VERY similarly... Although I prefer Battle Engine because in that you really feel like the Overpower, Extremely Expensive Top the Tech Tree RTS Unit. That and BEA just FEELS like an RTS from the POV of the most Versatile and Overpowered yet Balanced unit.

The game kinda reminds me of front mission mixed with starfox but holy shit the lore for this quaint third person shooter is halo quality.

Have you heard of an old Mega CD (or Sega CD, depending on your location) game called "Battlecorps"? It's worth looking up if you don't know it.
Oh wow blast from the past, although I remember that my copy had a bug where 1st mission just wouldn't end, I would kill all enemies and then out of boredom proceed to destroy trees, buildings and then allies thus failing the mission. I knew even back then that there was something wrong there, but I didn't have the internet and nobody else owned this game so I never completed this game
Some real gems in this era look forward to playing this someday soon. I recommend Yager (xbox OG, pc) it's a bit like rogue squadron with single player campaign. Also Tribes 2 (aka tribesnext) multiplayer jetpack and vehicles game.
Best mech game I've ever played. From time to time, I just keep getting back to clear it again. TIP: U can put your own frenectic MP3 tracks as BGM.

I played a demo of it when it came out, I was awestruck by the graphics.
I feel you would enjoy Armored Core: For Answer (2008).
You should review Battle Engine: Aquila. Very similar to Gun Metal in that you're in a transformable mech.

Yeah, that game was pretty rad. Had a hard copy some years ago, but long since lost the disc. Luckily GOG recently released it and I went ahead and snagged a new copy.
I need a Transformers game like this.
Closest to it is Transformers armada on PS2 but the 3 Autobots you play as are only grounded vehicles.
I added this game to my list of OG Xbox games to add to my library....then I found out it's on Steam...for $2.99.
Imagine how much it cost on discount.

I was intrigued by the idea of unusual controls but after playing it; those are some bizarre controls.
Visually i was expecting it to look like Battle Engine Aquila as they seemed similar but gun metal has strange somehow old pre rendered cutscene feeling graphics. Maybe its the sky.
There is options for separate invert aim for suit & jet so i will give it that.
I think one of the issues I have with the game, from the video I watched, it looks like 80% of you mostly in jet mode than on-foot combat.
Badass game, I should have given it a second chance before uninstalling
Oh, hey. I bought this on GOG for like a nickle a while ago. Good to know it was a good buy.
there is an old but fantastic 16 bit game called Herzog Zwei on the genesis/mega drive. Its by Technosoft and it has a similar idea to this but with much heavier rts elements mixed in.. i rented it as a kid and it took a while to figure out blind, but once you did it was incredible, especially for the time..

This game reminds me of the ps2 ace combat games but with a mech mode if you haven't played ace combat i would highly recommend playing the earlier titles just stay far away from the Xbox 360 or the Playstation 3 one

I'm sad I never played this game
As a kid I found it really easy and bland or maybe its my memory making it sound more easier than what you mention, heck, I even forgot the name and it just happens you did a video on it.
Still I did find robots cool since I watched robotech and I really liked the jet gameplay but it looks like one of those games I dont find myself replaying it.
