A day of parts running and combine repairs as we broke a belt and the vertical auger on the John Deere S670 combine. No harvest or tractor driving in this harvest VLOG.

We have a John Deere 9600 combine, we bought it with 4,100 engine hours and it now has 4,750 engine hrs; and we have had 2 simple breakdown, and have never been down a full day!!
You answered everything I was wondering because I know I have heard you say cousin and let's be honest if you didn't grow up in this life it's very hard to learn all the equipment and it's equally hard to quit so I knew there had to be a family farm or some operation where you started good video Mike
Great vid👍 it reminds me cleaning out 9500, lucerne had been sitting in tank n started to sprout. It sad to see auger not made in USA, I say JD stop cutting corners. 2188 was best harvester n could be modified to 2388.
Interesting video. My oldest son works 40-60 hours a week and helps a buddy during harvest and planting. He did help a guy that ran JD but it got to where he was mostly turning wrenches. Even though he was great at that, he quit there and is working for some guys that run C-IH.
Manman Sorry to say it's NOT cheap Chinese steel -it's our steel that they have been buying and making into things we buy. It's their LABOR that's cheap and has been luring all these MFRS (manufacturers)to source stuff over there. We need to put an end to this. And soon.And if you think LABOR is too high here, think about everything that would have to come down along with wages, specifically crop prices. I think they're low enough now. Major re-shuffleing of our economy......
I’m Glad I work on New Holland’s and not John Deere’s, unloading augers are chain driven so it’s a lot easier than changing a belt that size.the augers are also a bit more solid than that, the auger wears out before the contacts do.
Great video Mike! Thanks for helping others out!! Thanks for showing all the technical details of the combine and auger, belts and so on and showing where the wear occurs. Very interesting. Thnx for fixing, mostly with one hand👌👍 What you show at: 17:09 onwards, that that pulley in the grain bin has lost part of the nice green paint for about 60 percent at its outer side around (say for about 220 degrees), shows that the Pulley has been very hot. That because the V - belt must have been slipping for a while during last nights operation. That may have caused the V-belt had been broken. The outgoing axle must have been blocked or so, that maybe because it didn't fit well any longer on that auger that also was broken due the wear as you showed so nicely in detail. As you said guess everything that had been broken had to deal with eachother. Hoep the pulley indeed is still in good shape. In retrospect, once the first failure had been identified in time or if a good sensor had send an error message to the driver in the cabin, the second failure, the V-belt to get broke probably could have been avoided? But that's much of talking afterwards and is way to easy.. Smart to replace it all, on both sides! Once fixed hope it all runs smootly again without continuing to cause problems to the pulley and belt. Has been two years ago, faced this problem again later on? Presume and most probably fixed it well for its lifetime👌👍
No way that's an operator's fault, that part was junk. And just simple act of placing that tarp under auger tells me that you're farm born and bred! Keep up the good work! And congrats on 18.000 subs!

Hey we enjoy the repair videos too. Anyone who's ever ran equipment knows that breakdowns are going to happen and as you pointed out, all you can do is dig in and see where the problem is then fix it. Great job!!
I've changed a couple clean grain belts on the 70 series combines and it looks like its just as much of a pain in the ass on the S600 series. Really wish they could get some easier access on that top pulley in the bin.

I have worked for several different farmers who use equipment that is painted a variety of colors. One thing is common between them all. The steering wheels and control knobs all are colored black. At least they were before the joystick trend. I always told the farmer first thing that I will do a walk around in the morning before work and at every break. Any thing I find wrong I will tell them about. Not because it is a discrepancy based on paint color but it was their multiple tens of thousand dollar investment and I am just the hired hand. Sure beats throwing a rope over your shoulder and pulling the implement across the field the hard way
It seems all makes of combines have weak points that break or wear first. It's good to know this information before you go out and buy a used machine. It wouldn't surprise me that this fairly new John Deere machines problems is a common weak point across the whole design.
Great of you to review the biographical back story again. You were one of the first people I started watching when I started You Tube in December 2012. Kind of puts me breaking the occasional shear pin on my 5 foot Woods Cutter in perspective.
I wish I had the opportunity to be a farmhand aswell. I'm a busdriver today (which I don't really care much about) and I would trade that job anyday for a job on a farm, if I could make a living on it that is. I used to help out a little bit as a teenager, mostly during hay season but a little bit in the spring aswell and the memories I got from that are the best. I'm thankful for that I at least have gained a little bit of experience from real life farming so by watching your videos I get a really nice feeling hearing all the real sounds from tractors and machinery. You seem to be a really nice guy so I think the farmers that have you helping out should be very grateful to you.
Hi Mike! Wife and I went to the Paul Bunyan Show at Cambridge on the 6th this month and saw a lot of neat stuff. On the way back we came thru fairly close to where you were working on that JD. Great farming country in that area! Thanks for posting your story, I'd watched a few of yours and wondered about all the things you divulged. Thanks! I farm a little dab in NC Indiana and work as a pipefitter. But not for much longer, I think. Retirement beckons.....
Interesting you would mention China. I've been noticing for years that John Deere has been using inferior Chinese made materials. Also, I have found that John Deere brand grease is sub par. I switched to Mystik grease and have found much better performance.

Don't feel bad Mike, My brother was trying to harvest some canola on Saturday, and got one hell of plug up took him and I couple of hours to clean, Then only to find out that something on the straw walkers was broken that's a nearly $800 repair. Got to love farming, If it one thing its another
that breakfast got me in trouble …started adding fresh orange and apple to it now a year later just shredded frosty wheats and almond milk [still hate taste] , orange', and banana….its was hard but now theirs a lot of veggies, fruit and variety of nuts , 1 can soda a day and water bottle always …I though i was healthy tall and 160 wt. …was so wrong…to every one get a heart doctors opinion …
Nothing wrong with the steel, chinese or not. The auger drive dog setup on these is just a very poor design. I've replaced two so far and after that just started welding up the auger drive end and the gearbox drive dog. From the factory there is just barely enough engagement for it to work.
Go Mike the mechanic ! Not a good design for all the money you pay for one of them new John Deere Combine, how many hours are you supposed to get on those parts before you have to change them again or they fail...Damm !!!
Another great video, wow Late last night i broke the same belt. Went to bed fell fast asleep from a long day, much to my surprise woke up middle of the night tossing and turning thinking about the repair for the morning, i made the mistake of waking up the wife, never good when they have alonger day a had of them. So i got up headed down stairs to the office think i will catch up on a video or two , long about the third video yours pops up, i always enjoy them so started watching, to my surprise its a similar problem to mine, the next thing i know my alarm is going off, thanks to your video it must of put my mind at ease. Yesterday we had that same front come through with high winds rain sleet went from the 50's in the morning to by late afternoon it was in the 30's. That was in Archbold Ohio, Northwest Ohio.
Breakdowns and no go due to weather are all part of it. Very interesting to see the repair and how the combine is engineered. The world seems even smaller in agriculture . I dont know you ,and you dont know me, but we have covered alot of the same central Illinois ground.
Can’t always have perfect equipment when I saw the title I thought I was gonna be a belt or something bet then you discovered that and I was like man that’s fun

Thanks for the feedback. Where I grew up in South Texas, farmers carry their grain harvest (milo) directly to the commercial elevator for sale. There were no storage bins located on personal farms.

Hey mike i got a question about our 276 bidirectional versatile tractor, it keeps leaking under the seat and it also wont start with the key, any tips on what could be the problem
how many hours did you get on that combine? I broke 2 belts, the upper auger and the lower auger because I ingested some earth when I was harvesting some beans. Did you check the lower auger? In both cases I have to replace the lower auger because the chain just bended the auger every time. They had to put a clutch like on the tailling elevator.
watching i thought that u were the calmest man on the planet , those parts must be expensive ...it helps that you do not have to pay for them ..... i was surprised to see that they were made in china ! with the price tag of a combine like that .!!!!!! would try welding the old one and keep in the back of the shed .......my father never threw out anything ......i get it hard to also ..... its a long road without a turn .......!

I work for a company in Minnesota that makes the unloading augers for John Deere combines we actually make a lot of stuff for the combines

Was just about to say check the auger and about that time you did 👍. Had to replace that auger and driver on mine this year also

Do all mid-West farmers have their own storage tanks? When is the corn or beans taken to a commercial elevator for sale?
Yes most farmers have their own grain storage. They typically haul the grain to market after harvest throughout winter into the next summer.

I prefer the way the 100 and 20 series ran the load anger. Much easier repair.

I work for a Deere dealer and y'all wouldn't believe how many parts come in and say made in China, India, Spain, Mexico. Etc. It's very disappointing.
