    It's sad isn't it? Some people never grow out of this school kid mentality of thinking life is a popularity contest. They will spend and spend what they don't have, go into ridiculous amounts of debt, and attempt to gain status symbols that mean absolutely nothing.

    The problem is not the college. The problem is the society and the corporations and companies making every job require a Bachelors Degree. We have tons of very skilled people, ready to work that don't have a college degree. As a computer programmer, I know for a fact, everything I do right now could have been learned from any simple certification program requiring maybe 2 years, and probably much better than a bachelors knowledge base too.

      Sometimes. If it trains you in something valuable.
      For instance, an A+ certification is nigh on worthless, but a trade school will charge you a years tuition to take the classes quite happily.

    Hopefully the trades don't get oversaturated with too many trade school students. I go to a trade school and the classes are really small for the most part except for the more popular disiplines (i.e. automotive, electrician, hvac). Although I don't see this happening anytime soon, I hope it never happens.

      I'm pretty sure it won't since the emphasis of college still abounds. At the same time however, The stigma of Trade School is still emerging which is a shame. Trade School is a good alternative for anyone if they choose not to go or afford college. I plan on going to the Trades myself.

    Just finished my undergrad Nuclear Engineering, and going for a masters. I don't think it will be worthless - at the least I have learned a LOT about a subject I was interested in.

      The difference is, everyone won't go to school for what you learned, and everyone can't afford to just go to school to learn a LOT about a subject they were interest in. In the least, it would have to make sure they are able to put food on the table. Congrats to you.

      Engineering is some of the best degrees you can get, but one of the downfalls is that some will not consider to take a job in a foreign market or overseas, which can make a big difference in their careers. Most people do not want to leave the comfort of familiar surroundings. leave the comfort zone and good things will happen.

    I studied film and have a Bachelors in Film and Masters in Digital Imaging. It can very well be a worthless degree if you just try the conventional route of trying to find a regular job in the industry. To be successful in any creative field, I strongly recommend carving your own path and figuring out how to be an entrepreneur. I did, and although life is hard, it's very satisfying. Just always be sure that you've got basic necessities covered: paying the rent, putting food on the table, etc.

    This is why college is meant for you to diversify your points of opportunities. I'm in my 3rd year of studying a double major in Economics & Business Management. In my spare time, I learned & practice investing in financial markets; I'm started & am advancing in Taekwondo; and I'm doing some dance instructing. So, do different things in college that you can fall back on if your degree fails to land you a job.

    • @TENNSUMITSUMA

      Abel Gaiya 1 all those things you mentioned, can be done on your own simply by
      picking up a book on the subject much less taking a specific course 2 *diversify your points of opportunities* is all well and nice. Going

      I understand your sentiment against schooling, but I'm from a different country (Nigeria) where we there's no education debt crisis, and we follow the traditional system whereby your parents pay for your education, and if they don't have the money to do so, they set up a business for you to run. So formal education (with all its private benefits such as socialization) still has a lot of value to me and people of my country. Therefore, within the context of my country, formal education is a better option for me.

    It better to learn IT in community college and earn a certification less then 2 years without a 4 year degree utter garbage. If you want to learn programming, you can learn on the internet with motivation or community college, not university. University makes you take worthless exam that doesn’t help you in the real world and they teach programming like 10 years ago. They don’t really teach what new programming tools or engine that today’s world are using.

    What do you think about STEM master's degrees, mainly those for people that picked a worthless degree in the past?
    See for me, I got a worthless humanities degree because I was a lazy fuck back in uni. But, I'm thinking of doing a 1.5 year (or a 2 year) masters degree in Accounting, or professional accounting as you may call it - these programs do not require a bachelors in accounting to be admitted to the program and all the courses act as a way to meet requirements for the CPA exams. Technically, it would be considered expensive, but I can afford the cost, and I do genuinely want to change fields since my previous degree isn't doing me squat (luckily I'm employed right now, but its not a very glamorous position and I'm mostly working in temp positions right now).

    • @KevZen2000
      @KevZen2000 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Diaming787 Physics is worth it, but you will need a Masters or PhD to really do anything. It is not easy, and the chances is you could fail, and many people do not belong in majoring in it. Also, you have to go to a credible college/University, and you will have to basically do a lot of ass kissing to get anywhere. Going the physics path will cost you a lot.
      The success of physicist a is based on the discoveries made, what you publish, how much it is referenced, and how credible it is, and it is not like what is portrayed on TV, it can be very boring. Also, there will be very complex math, so if you do not like math, then forget it. Durning your degree, you will be spending a lot of time getting it, and even after that point it will still require a lot of work.

    For those wanting to "do college" differently, you should check out the EBook "College out of the Box"! (and the FB page) My son was able to do college and high school together with NO student debt (a total of only about $3,000) from an accredited long distance college. Never had to step foot on a campus, NO debt, no wasted time! It works for adults wanting to get their degree, high school students who want to earn a few credits to transfer in to their choice school or the way my son did it! For sure, college is a HUGE business- don't let your kids start off life in debt or without the needed skills!

      Anything in a STEM field! Is always going to be in demand!
      So few young people in America go into these fields today. American companies kept asking the government to up the H-1B visas.
      This allows foreign worker to come here and work in these fields, because not enough American kids are going to school to work in these fields and some many jobs go unfilled.
      May be something to think about.

    I'd like to add that the original purpose of higher education wasn't necessarily to get a job. It was to learn a subject that interests the student. The first students usually were people whose parents had the means to support them while they took time out and studied a subject of interest. It wasn't for the added prospects of getting a job. Added job prospects were given to particular students who studied subjects for positions that required that level of education.

    oh then forgive me, but i still disagree with the title. You could become an Engineer by reading the right books and taking the right test/certifications but it is time consuming and complicated to take all that on your own I should know. Look at it this way, would you prefer a Civil Engineer form a well credited College/University to build a bridge or a self educated one? *They both have the same work experience. A degree in a highly credited university helps you get a job faster...

      ***** Yeah but the amount of papers you have to write is less in engineering and most science fields than civilization, law, economics, and so forth. Granted, I still need to crap out a 2-5 page lab report every once in a while. Still not as bad as a 10 page creative writing essay.

    I am a psycholigist with a 6 figure income. The demand for mental health services is higher than an xbox 360 or an ipod because its something that over half the country is in need of. I also worked in the computer field and it is over saturated.

    I have a multimedia degree from ITT. It took them 2 years to tell me that I had to move out of state to get a job with it. They kept trying to force UPS on all the students after they graduated, but that was a obvious dead end. I still talk to a lot of my old classmates, they too can't get jobs with it. They recently took out the multimedia class and introduced new classes that have nothing to do with computers really.

    I agree with Maximumwangchung with the spell checking but I also believe in typos and seeing that the "i" key is next to the "o" key I can see that happening, in other words I will give you the benefit of the doubt. Now about the computer field...Currently it is not over saturated. There is a high demand for people with degrees in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. These degrees are no piece of cake, about 50% change concentration or dropout after taking the basic programming course.

    Just to note. I have red the book "Rich father, poor father". This book has very similarites (not same) with what you describe. The writer notes, that school system does not prepare the children for real world, and give two different aspects form friend's father and his fathers.
    Also, good point "Producer vs. Parasite". So people, it your descision what do you want to be.

    as is said in the video. 'first you find a job that's gonna pay', 'make sure its something that can put food on the table'. you may 'LOVE and ADORE' women's studies, but that wont pay any bills much less make you live good.
    i guarantee you, you wont be happy and energetic if you go to work doing what you love, but are homeless on the street starving cause the job doesn't pay anything.

    Indeed. If you have the talent for whatever trade you choose then go for it. As a diesel mechanic I can work nearly anywhere. I used to brag to my friends that even if we had another great depression, I'd still be working. So far so good.

    answer to 2. You need to study an accredited (in US ABET, in UK Engineering council) degree if you want to be an Engineer and not a Technician - there is quite a difference between these roles and titles. Agreed more people should consider apprenticeships, but this is only really appropriate if you actually want to enter given field of work. In aviation we need Scientists and Engineers, but there is also a large business and logistics support function which is often over-looked.

    First off let me tell you how much I love this video. A few people that I know have been telling me this however, I did not want to believe them. But my question now is I am considering majoring in Computer Engineering, Eletrical Engineering, or Accounting. I know as you stated they are all solid but which one do you think is better of the three?
    Thank You

    the problem is, yes with a math science or engineering degree you are damn near guaranteed employment. the problem is these fields are not for people who struggled with algebra in high school. you cant pick a career by what it pays, you have to consider your own talents. being an engineer is only for a very small percentage of the population.

  • @friedgable

    The rest of the public who is interested in job prospects should not need a degree, but they are bounded to by the employers who are also members of the public that believe their open positions should require a degree, but have not specified one. This creates a situation where all members of the public believe a degree is necessary for any position, regardless of the subject matter. This undermines the purpose of a degree, which is to learn the subject, not get a job.

  • @friedgable
    @friedgable 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problems are embedded in the public's perception of what is required for a job, with the public being members of the employers and members of the prospective employees. For the people who are interested in job prospects, the resounding solution is not always college unless the subject of interest is law, medicine, engineering, or one of their derivatives.

    marketing has never influenced a decision ive made to buy anything.
    im the most anti-name brand person on the planet. custom self built computer, no name brand clothes (that i make look as if they're designer), and generic xyz store brand unless name brand is unavoidable.
    when i get computer parts, its specs first then looks second that get me to buy

    I know people who are CPA's and they make way over $100,000. According to the chart it says they only $45,000.

  • @friedgable
    @friedgable 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    With the increased focus on these added job prospects that some students were given after they were trained for a particular subject such as law, medicine, and engineering, the public started to believe an education is specifically for a job. This is not true. An education is to learn a subject. No degree is worthless, there just appears to be a misunderstanding of how the value of the degree is measured. Also, many positions have begun requiring degrees when the subject matter is not applicable

    kinda, thats if you plan on looking for work in law enforcement which I highly doubt theyre looking for nowadays, but again I have books on criminology and law codes that my neighbor threw away, I can learn criminal justice and child delinquency on my own, its the tact training that counts in the academy. You don't necessarily need a degree to be a police officer.

  • @GencastMods
    @GencastMods 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I disagree with the title. the video does not state that college is a fraud. It only mentions that there are lots of degrees that are worthless and focuses on bringing awareness of such. But he specifies that degrees such as Engineering are degrees worth studying/taking in college.
    Basically I agree with the video but the title is wrong. You need a degree to be an Engineer thus you need to go to college for that, but there are also "trap" degrees which you need to avoid.

    You can almost a kin it too a musician, talent is the overwhelming factor there. I'm getting an electricians degree with a focus in renewable energy and hope to work in the private sector, but I have a backup plan to run my dad's tree nursery if things fall through with that. I know I won't make much money in my life, but I am fortunate I will never be unemployed or without a place to live.
