I believe no other rendition of this song compares to Brian Stokes Mitchell’s. It’s beyond his magnificent voice. His delivery is absolutely superb. His conviction in the words gives me chills. The other half of this performance also makes it wonderful: I love how his counterpart’s state of mind completely shifts by the end of it. She even cuts him off in the beginning because she can’t be bothered with shenanigans and then is captivated by the end, just as the audience is. This performance makes me cry.
You captured my feelings so well. I guess that must make this message universal. It touches my soul like few other things do. The human pathos & beautiful delivery are stunningly intimate & truthful beyond a singular experience.

My father sang this song to me as a 16 year old child, some 37 years ago. I'd never heard of Don Quixote, The Man from LA Mancha til I took my Advanced Spanish class and was exposed to this classic.
I would advise any acting or singing students to study Brian`s incredible delivery of this song - it is a perfect example of breath control and precise delivery. Wonderful !

Peter O Toole played this and he isn’t a singer- but the sheer vulnerability and essence of the character of Don Quixote is vast. So actors and singers, it is a fashion for a singer in a musical to stop the show with a number- but really the basic truth is to play the character🌹

When I was in high school in the 1970's The Spanish teacher took our class to see this play on Broadway. We also acted it out in class as a way to learn the language.I was unable to attend and always regretted it after hearing the other students talk about how great it was.Well in 2003 when I herd that Brian Stokes was staring in the show along with Mary Elizabeth I quickly got tickets for my wife and I.I will never forget this performance.I waited after the show and got autographs and I purchased the CD at the show and often played it to my young son growing up.He too was quite taken by it.It is my life theme song.Always follow your dreams and no matter how hard life is if you really try you will persevere. And even if you fail you will know that you gave it your best.A true inspiration.

I lost a great deal of my memory last year. But listening to Brian singing The Impossible Dream brought one special day back to my mind. Had the privilege of seeing Brian on Broadway years ago, with my husband and two girls. I remember looking down the aisle during the death scene, with tears in my eyes, because I was so touched. To find that all of them had tears as well. Why do I love this song, this story so much? Because the story reminds me no matter how others may view us, or how we may view myself, there is a creator who sees us for the person He made us. His children, heirs, standing in righteousness, perfect and complete in Him. And because we are all called to be knights, called to Armor up, fight for the right, and march for a heavenly cause. We are called to follow a star. Our star is named Jesus, and unlike Don Quixote, who dies at the end of the play, our Star rose on the third day. And He has won the fight against the unbeatable foe. I have loved this song ever since I memorized the lyrics as a teenager when Man of La Mancha first appeared on Broadway. But, I have never heard a rendition that touched me to my very core the way this did. Brilliantly perfect in every way.
I was in the ensemble of this show in my sophomore year of high school with my then best friend playing Quixote. That year was the worst year of my life. It was traumatic and harrowing in all ways. I was literally dying. Physically as well as being suicidal. I’ve been doing theater for 10 years now and it’s always been my outlet. My comfort. He was graduating that year and on closing night as he sang the reprise of this with everyone onstage as Cervantes left the prison, I sobbed. Still hit that like high ass note in the chorus but with tears. This song means so much to me. Although we’re not as close anymore after some stuff happened this song is still comfort. It reminded me to keep going. To not give up. Even if it’s a hopeless fight don’t give up.
I have been a huge fan of Man of La Mancha since the 1970s and Am am glad I found this. I did not think the Richard Kiley version could be topped - but this may have done it. One of the best, most human songs ever written - very well done. As a wedding gift, just last week, I gave my nephew and his wife a Don Quixote statue that my father gave me. She is an actress and Aldonza is a dream role for her, and my nephew is a chef. They have never been to NYC but are moving there in the "quest" for her to make it on Broadway, and him to open a restaurant in one of the restaurant capitols of the world. They are dreaming what are usually impossible dreams - and since they understand the Don, I hope the statue will inspire them to "try, when your arms are too weary".
I saw him in SLC too. You are so correct. He has one of the most beautiful and remarkable voices in the business. He and Audra McDonald are perfection. If you listen to Wheels of a Dream with both of them, it'll blow your mind.
This production was absolutely outstanding. This number has helped me get through what has been an arduous year, and BSM's vocal prowess only adds to that. Him and Richard Kiley have the best interpretations of this timeless and powerful classic.
I was lucky to get to see Stokes in this show. My friend & I hiked to the stage door, but his wife told us that he couldn't speak as he had to save his voice.
That's the sad thing about it. They were given the privilege to bare witness to a performance of unmatched magnificence in the theatre and yet but for a few, chose to sit on their fat "ladies' and gentlemen of the theatre" derriere's and let the moment pass. And at of all places, The 2003 Tony Awards at The Radio City Music Hall.

I saw Brian Stokes Mitchell in Dallas. His performance was spectacular. I wished he had gotten the recognition his talent and good looks warranted. He would have made a great movie star.
When I was a child we played the original cast record over and over, our parents had seen it on Broadway...hearing this made me burst into tears, remembering my long gone parents, and those simple times if being so entertained by a record to a show we had never seen and how GREAT it is. When my ex-fiancee bought tickets for this show at the Beck Theater, I thought Stokes-Mitchell was too young and robust to play Cervantes' " knight of the mournful countenance." I was wrong. He was magnificent.
There have been dozens of renditions done of this song over the years. Sinatra, Elvis, and other various Broadway stars absolutely do not hold a candle to this man as far as this song is concerned. Anyone can fight me on that too!

I have loved this song ever since I memorized the lyrics as a teenager when Man of La Mancha first appeared on Broadway. But, I have never heard a rendition that touched me to my very core the way this did. Brilliantly perfect in every way.
I was in the ensemble of this show in my sophomore year of high school with my then best friend playing Quixote. That year was the worst year of my life. It was traumatic and harrowing in all ways. I was literally dying. Physically as well as being suicidal. I’ve been doing theater for 10 years now and it’s always been my outlet. My comfort. He was graduating that year and on closing night as he sang the reprise of this with everyone onstage as Cervantes left the prison, I sobbed. Still hit that like high ass note in the chorus but with tears. This song means so much to me. Although we’re not as close anymore after some stuff happened this song is still comfort. It reminded me to keep going. To not give up. Even if it’s a hopeless fight don’t give up.

I have been a huge fan of Man of La Mancha since the 1970s and Am am glad I found this. I did not think the Richard Kiley version could be topped - but this may have done it. One of the best, most human songs ever written - very well done. As a wedding gift, just last week, I gave my nephew and his wife a Don Quixote statue that my father gave me. She is an actress and Aldonza is a dream role for her, and my nephew is a chef. They have never been to NYC but are moving there in the "quest" for her to make it on Broadway, and him to open a restaurant in one of the restaurant capitols of the world. They are dreaming what are usually impossible dreams - and since they understand the Don, I hope the statue will inspire them to "try, when your arms are too weary".

I saw him in SLC too. You are so correct. He has one of the most beautiful and remarkable voices in the business. He and Audra McDonald are perfection. If you listen to Wheels of a Dream with both of them, it'll blow your mind.
This production was absolutely outstanding. This number has helped me get through what has been an arduous year, and BSM's vocal prowess only adds to that. Him and Richard Kiley have the best interpretations of this timeless and powerful classic.
I was lucky to get to see Stokes in this show. My friend & I hiked to the stage door, but his wife told us that he couldn't speak as he had to save his voice.

That's the sad thing about it. They were given the privilege to bare witness to a performance of unmatched magnificence in the theatre and yet but for a few, chose to sit on their fat "ladies' and gentlemen of the theatre" derriere's and let the moment pass. And at of all places, The 2003 Tony Awards at The Radio City Music Hall.
They did! The longer clip exists if you look for it. This clip cuts away but that night the ovation was thunderous and all of Radio City Music Hall was on its feet. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I saw Brian Stokes Mitchell in Dallas. His performance was spectacular. I wished he had gotten the recognition his talent and good looks warranted. He would have made a great movie star.
When I was a child we played the original cast record over and over, our parents had seen it on Broadway...hearing this made me burst into tears, remembering my long gone parents, and those simple times if being so entertained by a record to a show we had never seen and how GREAT it is. Thank you Brian, for bringing it all back again.
I saw him do this live on Broadway during this run . It was exhilarating then , and revisiting it was wonderful. It was even better live :) .

I have being singing this song for 10 years, trying to master it. Happy with my results, but after hearing his voice I realized that I will never reach his perfection, it's like an unreachable star. Some people are born with gifts like that
Much longer for me and I am with you. I think I can hit the notes almost as well, but my voice lacks that same power and timbre that his has. I have had better luck with Dulcinea - where I think I could give even this guy a run for his money.

Well said! But never assume that everyone should reach for the same star, The one disagreement between me and Don Quixote. He decided he was a knight errant because the world did not conform to his views of virtue. But we also must recall that there are "dark stars" out there, and many reach for them.

This might be the best English rendition. The French rendition by Jacques Brel is still a lot closer to that unreachable star in my opinion.
