My bookshelf was a major clutter zone in my bedroom. I had about 100 books, dozens of candles, fake plants everywhere, unused journals, etc. I went through all of my books. Anything available in the library was given away. Now I'm down to 7 books, 4 fake plants, 0 unused journals, and 6 candles. It's a start!

With this being the "dead week" between Christmas and NYE, I think most people are relaxing -- but not me! I've decluttered my whole apartment in the last two days (I am already a minimalist so this was fairly easy), but now I'm preparing for an even lower, low-spend 2022. Cheers and happy holidays, Gabe!

I agree except with the outdated food, because best before dates are actually made up to cause us to buy more stuff. (Some exceptions of course, but anything dry like pasta won't outdate for years.) So while spices might lose potency and things like condiments go mouldy after a while, there are many, many foods that are still perfectly usable well past the date. :) Thanks for the great video...going to go get rid of some old email now.

Think many ppl in germany try not to waste perfectly good food. The best before date is something to make money and some legal security for the company's to not get sued.

A marker or a marker and white tape is your foods friend. I put the exp. date on the label or lid big enough and clear enough to read quickly. I do it as I put the groceries away, so nothing gets missed. It takes just a few extra minutes and if something is within a month of expiring, I know that I need to use it soon and it doesn't get weird in the cabinet.

Getting rid of my gaming discs that I have collected over the years. I absolutely love gaming and do not intend to stop, but to keep collecting discs even though I never replay games once I finish them, was getting kind of pointless. The beauty of having physical game discs is that I can simply sell them and make some money back, so that is what I did and continue to do. I enjoy them and sell them. Great video btw, love from Ireland.

In the spring, we sold the 3 bedroom home I've lived in for 50 years and decided to rent. At various times it's been my wife, 5 children, parents, in-laws . . . also living there. Everyone came, everyone brought their stuff, and when they left, they left their stuff. We filled a 12 cu. yd. dumpster, at least 20 contractor bags, boxes on the curb, donations to church flea markets, sold some; and we moved to the rental. We found we don't like renting. We bought a home and now everything has to be moved again. Stuff we thought we wanted has become more stuff to be rid of. If you don't do it right along, it truly does become a nightmare you find you're living in when it has to be done all at once.

A lot of the stuff I have was my husband's... he died in February 2020. It's so hard to get rid of his things because I feel guilty like he will get upset about it. Also, every time I get rid of something that was his, I feel like I am losing another part of him. I know that isn't logical, but I can't help it.

@David Rawsthorn Thank you, David, for this truly appreciated gift. ❣I know I can answer that question without any hesitation; my husband adored me as much as I did him. When I asked myself that question, I could picture him looking at me lovingly and saying (as he often did when I worried about things), "It doesn't matter." I don't know if I could ever be with another man, but I do know I need to move forward with this different version of myself. This one thing has held me back.

Thanks for this video. Implementing already some of those advises, and some I might need to revisit (looking at my kitchen especially;). For the Festivities, I've started to use only a little ornaments I like and cherish for years and the rest is all "to be used up". If I want to treat myself with an ornament, it is either a candy that can be put on the tree and then eaten up (I have now 30days to eat my Xmas decor XD), or a tematu candle, that will be used up during the festive time. Same with new house decor, although here I still have to improve.

I shouldn’t have told my husband about a story on the radio today. The actor who played Biff on “Back to the Future” got $75,000 for a new in box wrapped VHS tape of the show.
He was convinced that VHS would be around always, never opened it
So my husband immediately went to his VHS collection and thought about what he could keep. I had to remind him these were all “new inbox!” But I think he’s gonna be hanging onto some of them. Oh well

Items you haven't sold- another option is to list them as for a swap or trade! That way you can "get your money's worth" by exchanging them for something you actually need or would use or need to buy, and likewise so does the other person!
That's what I've been doing during my decluttering process with items I've listed for sale that aren't selling, and it's been fun and mutually beneficial to parties to get rid of their item that is clutter to them in exchange for something they need or want and will actually use!

Btw, LOVE your channel Gabe! I subscribed!!! Your content, that I've seen so far (3 or 4 videos lol), is almost identical to how I think and feel!!!
I've been up and down throughout life with major decluttering, then things accumulate, then people GIVE you lots of free stuff because they think you're in need, and it's nice stuff but doesn't actually get used, going thrifting for recreation etc etc etc...
Recently, things changed drastically in my life, which has really changed my relationship with "stuff". Since October 2021, I'm been on a committed journey... by no means am I as far along as where you are currently, and I agree everyone is very different it terms of their goals and comfort, but certainly taking daily strides to get to a place where I can feel comfortable and stress free about my surroundings!
I've been feeling very alone in the process, as not everyone around me understands some of the reasonings that I have about less is more, less is less stress, etc etc etc, but now I know I am most definitely NOT ALONE!!!
    THANK YOU!!!
    Fawn 😊

At a senior living place that I used to work they would have a recycle receptacle right next to the mailboxes so residents could just throw the junk mail away as soon as they pulled it from their box. It didn't even have to make it back to their apartment!
Wallet: I put little used punch cards in a separate zipper wallet in my car, but then I don't have it when I need it. I forget to take it out until I'm at the check stand already.
Pantry: what do you do with something like rock salt that you use to make ice cream once in a blue moon?

    • @trinam2503

If I make it at least once a year, I keep it. But I have a ridiculous amount of storage in my house and 2(!) Pantries. One we keep our food in and the other is canning supplies and our once a year stuff. If you aren't blessed w an excess of space, (which is a position I have been in many times in other homes), decide if the cost of buying it once a year is a cost you can justify? Or if it's pricey if you can find an out of the way place to store it?

Hello Gabe! I would like to make a suggestion for your videos to come. I have been following you for a while now and the videos are so cool! However, minimalism can only be explained a certain amount of times otherwise it can get a bit repetitive. Therefore, I think it would be fantastic if you could use your minimalism skills to start talking about "interior design" (and related topics) but from a manly point of view. I would love to get ideas on how to decorate my apartment with masculine decoration tips (the minimalistic way). For me, it is not as important what we can get rid of but what we actually need as human beings to live a happy life. Very often we think we need things we don't need and opening a debate about what really matters and what is needed in life, would be fantastic. Thanks in advance and I wish you the best of luck! UL.

@@diamondsandrubies1487 Keep medical, taxes, rent receipts/mortgage, deeds, anything extremely important. With taxes , you can get rid of them after 7 years and bills you paid after a year, bank statement after 2 years but check them when you get them because of errors sometimes. You can Google anything I missed because I was wondering also what to get rid of, a few years ago because I didn't want to throw out anything important.

Not sure if you’ll see this but I have a question: do you have sentimental items stored away, like in your parents attic? I’m a teenager trying to declutter but it’s hard to make decisions over stuff like childhood toys or stuff I drew/ wrote at age 6, even though I barely look at them or enjoy them. This is amplified with the babyhood stuff I don’t even remember, like the blanket I brought home from the hospital. Any advice/perspective from anyone would be nice, because honestly I’m struggling.

Take pictures of the sentimental stuff that you're going to get rid of and keep the rest. If it brings you joy, keep, if not, toss. That's the Konmarie method. It's on TH-cam. I don't know if I spelled it correctly but you shouldn't have trouble finding it. It's popular!
