I Had Never Heard This Song Before By Jimmy Ruffin, I Have All Of His Motown Stuff But Some How Missed Out On This Great 1980 Song By Jimmy Ruffin, It Stand's The Test Of Time And I Sure Do See That It Doe's When You Have Talent Like His As Soon As The Song Come's On It Just Doe's Something To Your Soul It Pick's You Up.
At the 40 hour Last Party of The Saint, NYC's premier gay dance club, in May of 1988, at the end of every DJ's set they played this song. We danced under the dome with tears in our eyes as heart shaped balloons floated up under the dome on our body heat as though those that had passed from AIDS were dancing one last time amongst us. Ever since, this song is played at least once during The Saint At Large parties in NYC. And the tears still flow.
Francisco Villagomez Already have, far more than many. Learned a year ago that my first boyfriend died of AIDS back in Feb '94, a week before his 32nd birthday. His balloon has joined the others & each time this song is played the tears flow, a whole f**king lot.
I was a waitor in a prominent restaurant in the late 80's to '94. The restaurant was right across the street from Carnegie Hall. I was making mixed-tapes for bars then. I was a bar-dj at the time on weekends. I had started at The Hard Rock Cafe which at the time was right around the corner before it moved. I made mixed tapes there also. Nevertheless, we had a very close wait staff. We got along very well and understood each other's interests, passions and career objectives and etc. I still remember very vividly when a fellow server who I knew was gay and I knew he often went to these types of clubs. I distinctly remember when he brought a tape of this song in. he told me that I HAD to hear this song. Well, as a real audiophile, record, album and song collector, I ran out and found this song on Jimmy Ruffin's album called, SUNRISE. I still play the song often for whomever in my home. It's THAT good. I found the vinyl at where I used to buy some of my vinyl which was a place on W 43rd Street in Manhattan called DOWNSTAIRS RECORDS which was actually upstairs as soon as you walked in the front door there was stairwell. haha Anyway, songs have a life. They affect us. For me, this song has history and a moment of relevance. It has a root for me. A time of its birth in my life for someone and something special for them. After reading Harry what you shared, I knew that you danced with my former co-worker and friend Tom. He was hysterical, a great co-worker and a gem of a guy. Thanks for sharing YOUR story with this song. I know I have mine and THAT is what it's all about....
This record sort of helped my Broken 💔 Heart.. came out in such a sad 😢time of my life.!!!!!!! My Heart was broken 💔 so bad, by my one true love 💘.... its never repaired it's self in 30 yrs on....😢
The Saint, 105 Second Avenue, NYC, NY. This song puts me right back on the dance floor with the tribe. All of us, there, arms in the air. the smells, the lights and Jimmy Ruffin Hold On to My Love. Sweetness. Thanks Jimmy. Sleep in peace.
I literally “raised on the radio” as a kid growing up around small market radio… I remember when this was premiered on a little station in the middle of fly/over Illinois… I was the one to spin this licorice in 1980. Still have that 45 with the RSO “Return to Distributor Upon Request” gold stamped on the label. I thought it was a classic the moment it began to spin.
This cool song reached #10 in the spring of 1980. (U.S., Billboard) It was his second greatest hit besides the classic, "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" from back in 1966.
RIP Jimmy Ruffin...This was a great song ...you was a truly brilliant singer...It was very sad day when the Motown Sound came to an end...really was a sad day.

Classic, was huge in its time. No reason it isn't still all over classic radio.
Sadly, it’s not even on Spotify. Only a bad re-recorded version.
Jimmy Ruffin was in class by
himself

Just more proof of the Gibbs brothers’ genius!
@@YouSPI It is Gibb not Gibbs
@@MA-oy3sx I’m very well aware, apparently spellcheck did not. Did you correct the original poster as well? 😂
@@YouSPI Ok sorry ...should have been just generally. I have seen some that call them Gibbs here before, but that must have been someone else.
This song has been virtually ignored by the oldies/greatest hits stations & that's a downright shame.
Exactly
Yep, I bought this fantastic song back in 1980. Love it!!
It's a fucking scandal. Needs to be investigated
