- Our Show Mode Charging Dock review explores whether you really need the new dock or if alternatives like a standard case or the Echo Show would be better.
When the new Show Mode Charging Dock released, we immediately bought it to see how well it works. It charged well and added a lot of value to our Fire HD tablet. There are a few drawbacks to be aware of, as we cover in the video.

I bought the Echo Show 2nd Generation and I don't regret it one bit. Another thing to note is that the tablet doesn't support other smart devices such as lights, camera's, thermostats, door locks etc. It is a good alternative don't get me wrong, but if you plan on building a smart home I would recommend getting a Echo Show, Echo Spot, Echo Dot etc...

Can we do an updated version of this please? :) Does this still apply? The new fire hd 8 plus (gen 10) can come bundled with a wireless dock but I think it's more than the 8" echo show now.
I use my Fire 8s in show more all the time. It's great! The sound isn't as good,but I can live with that. The biggest complaint that I have heard concerning the Echo Show is its lack of flexibility, that it doesn't have much more functionality than an Echo Dot. That's not quite as valid as it used to be, now that the gen2 version with the browsers came out. But my 8 functions as a full blown tablet, with thousands of apps, as well as as an Echo device. The latest update brought it up to full Show functionality. The 8 wins in almost every way, other than sound fidelity.
Thank you so much for showing how this fits together. I was suggested to buy one to get my fire working again as it is stuck on 1% (seems a common problem😠). The only thing I say is if the cable is not working how will the docking station make any difference using same port .
No one else seems to show the plugging in bit so I am really grateful I did not waste my money

I've already ordered my combo before I saw this video, thanks for the review. We have multiple Echo devices, and I thought I was really going to like the Show for the kitchen. NO APP SUPPORT. So, my recipe organizer (Paprika) can't be used on the Show. With this, I get the Show mode (that I plan on using in the morning for my Flash Briefing/getting ready for work) AND I can load Paprika and use it in the kitchen. Win/Win. They should have made this the Show (or at least have support for Apps from the Amazon App Store).

Thanks for the great video. Will the fire tablet (in show mode) automatically show security camera videos as soon as they get triggered? Eg: if a visitor presses an Alexa supported video doorbell, will it immediately show the doorbell video on the Fire Show Mode or does that only work with Echo Show?

That charging dock is cool, somebody needs to make something like that for the iPad.
The Show should've never made it past concept. The Fire HD 10's MSRP is $149.99 and regularly goes on sale ($99.99). Fire HD 10's Show Mode Dock is now $54.99 (originally $49.99). $205 for both the tablet and dock at regular price is 10% cheaper than the Echo Show's $229.99 MRSP, you could actually opt for the 64gb tablet for $5 more than the Echo Show at regular price.
The Echo Show has an 8 in display with a really large bezel, no rechargeable battery for mobility purposes, and no internal storage for apps making it an absurdly limited product for the money
even at the same price of $129.99 considering the alternatives from Amazon alone.
Even if you want something cheaper get a Fire HD 8 ($79.99), and Fire HD 8 Show Mode Dock ($39.99), and you'll still $10 from the Echo Show's sale price.

Do you have the arlo baby camera? Do you think you can do a review of the fire tablet in conjunction with the arlo baby? Arlo was supposed to create their own monitor but decided against it and recommended the amazon tablet.
It seems to be charging ok, now. I didn't have the magnetic lined up.
The tablet would have been better off if it supported magnetic charging. I get that out was probably left off for cost reasons. How else could you get a 10" tablet for $99? If your someone that has to plug and unplug your tablet constantly is say this dock is worth it. I speak from experience that micro usb ports will wear out and break. My nexus 7 tablet has a broken micro usb port. If it wasn't for the fact it has magnetic charging I would have had to trash it. I got my fire hd 10 a few weeks ago and coupled that with this dock I can disconnect my echo dot and use my tablet now for most of those functions. Nice review.thank you.

I'm curious about the same thing. Wondering if I can run ActionTiles or SharpTools with show mode. It'd be awesome to wall mount a tablet capable of doing both. I don't think there's a wall mountable show mode dock, but it'd be easy enough to 3d print something to mount the stock dock and add a magnet (like the type car phone mounts use) to lock the tablet onto the dock.
To me, that sounds like a huge winning situation. An echo on the wall, an easy way to open up your smarthome dashboard, and a fully functional tablet, all in one device.

I kinda by-passed that I used a lamicall aluminium stand I have a hd10.
I'm considering picking up one of these for my parents for Christmas. I know that Echo Show now supports Skype calls. My question is whether this setup could support Skype as well. I'm guessing Skype itself works fine, because I can do Skype on a regular Fire HD tablet. But I'm really wondering whether Skype calls can be made while in Show mode. Thanks!
This video had everything I was wondering. So other than the speakers are you saying the experience on the Echo Show and Fire Tablet are identical? I think the versatility has made this a great deal! I don't use my tablet much and I've been wondering if i even need one. But as a Show, I'm sure ill use it more. Thanks!

I want to build a CUSTOM SMART MIRROR: A tablet in Show mode, with a custom mirror made from just a piece of glass and Mirror Effect Spray, the new spray that makes any glass into a mirror. Just mark and block off the area for the screen of the tablet, and spray the glass around it to make it into the mirror. Then just some clever mounting - thinking raised a bit off the wall ala a 3-4" shadow box with a side access panel to be able to troubleshoot the tablet, and WHALA you have a custom smart mirror!! would prob. also build in some tubing to allow voice to get to the mic on the tablet better...

Speakers are super important for me. Small footprint is important to me so additional speakers is bad.

Wait, so if I use the fire had with the charge station along with connecting the HD to a Bluetooth speaker, then can I voice command Alexa to play a song and it WILL go over the Bluetooth speakers or not? Wasn’t clear when you made your statement on Bluetooth. Did you just say you couldn’t connect to a speaker initially via voice command or what?
+Jordan Jensen hey sorry for the confusion. You can connect to a Bluetooth speaker and play music through it. When using an Echo or Echo dot you can say "Alexa connect to Bluetooth" and then the Echo will connect to your Bluetooth speaker and the output will be through the speaker. On the Fire HD you have to pull down the settings on the screen and turn on Bluetooth that way. So Bluetooth works but it's just a small annoyance to connect vs the Echo. I hope that clarifies it.
Mine is only charging to 68 percent. It shows on the dock it is charging. I've unplugged and restarted. I just got this yesterday. Does it take longer to charge when you first get tablet. It has been on dock for over 8 hrs. Thank you so much if you can help me. I'm new to all of this.
Yes the initial charging takes a little longer then usual but after that its faster. Overall not the fasting charging tablets but if you leave it over night when you go to sleep it doesn't really matter. Hope this answers ur question :)
Is the microphone in the tablet comparable to an echo? I mean does it pick up your voice as well? All the echo's advertise: 7 far-field microphones can hear you from across the room. Any thoughts on that?
+Brian M the microphone works better than expected but it's not going to be as good as an echo. As long as I'm in the same room it works great but I don't think it will work across the house like the echo devices.
How does this affect the battery life on the tablet if you keep it on the charger all the time?
So far I haven't noticed any decrease in battery life when I pull it off the dock. Hopefully, it stays that way but time will tell.
Do you still need to plug in usb cord to kindle itself to charge kindle or does usb plug directly into dock? Wanting to get away from plugging in usb to kindles directly as my grand kids tear up the usb port to kindle about 2 or 3 times a year.
The case for the dock plugs into the micro usb. Then you just slide the case onto the dock to charge so no more messing with micro usb chargers. This would solve your issue of kids tearing up the usb port.
When in show mode does the display stay on all the time or does it switch it self off after a set amount of time?
It stays on all the time. The screen will dim very low, maybe even off it's hard to tell, if you are not in the room for a while but when you walk back in the room it lights back up.
My wife has MS and I have a ring pro doorbell. I have been looking at the echo show 10.1 and the fire tablet 10 so if someone rings the doorbell she can tell alexa to show the front door. Right now she has to remember to switch from live tv to the firestick on the tv then tell alexa to show the door. This confuses her and takes too long resulting in missed deliveries. Which device would you recommend the echo show 10.1 or the fire table 10 and the show dock?
i would recommend the The fire 10 cause then you can use it both as a tablet and a dock. Kill 2 birds with one stone! Its worth it and if your wondering you can also get google play on it :) Hope this helps
Can you trick your tablet into being in show mode without the dock? I have a wall mounted tablet right now but I'm switching it out for a fire device soon.
Yes it just needs to be plugged into power and you can toggle it on by swiping down to show the menu.
Is it possible to put the tablet on the dock without using show mode? I want a charging dock but i want to be able to navigate the tablet normally and open apps etc
Yes you can just turn off show mode and it will be in normal tablet mode while charging.
Hi, when you use the echo show mode, can you still access hadashboard? I am looking for a tablet to have a hadashboard running on it so my wife can use the button to turn lights on and off; she doesn't like to talk to Alexa!!! But I do, that is why I hope I can use firetablet show mode to turn on or off my lights and wife can use hadashboard.

Yes you can change it to "Amazon" for the wake word. We did that because it was getting confused with our echo device in the next room.

Make a 2nd Amazon account, but put that account location in the UK. See if that works

You can turn off sleep in developer options but what it does it fades the screen to an ambient clock(can be turned off) then the normal comes back on when motion

When switching to Show Mode the screen goes into landscape mode and won't rotate to portrait mode even if you are holding it in portrait mode.

You can have it pull up a third party TH-cam app but I wasn't able to get it to play TH-cam videos using Alexa. I also haven't added the Google Play store on it to get the actual TH-cam app so it may work better with that.

yes you can! If your also wondering you can get google play on the tablet to! its really easy. only takes 5 minutes

David Beiler I’m pretty sure he was saying you CAN connect it to another speaker, you just can’t do it verbally. So you’d go into settings and pair them. If the speaker was designated just for the Tablet, they could just stay paired. If you use the speaker for multiple devices, I could see it getting annoying to not be able to use verbal command to switch its pairing. (FF to 3:35)
