      It is a good one. I thing her voice is really good, but I'm not mad on the musical arrangement. For me the best version is the Tin Tin Out version with Shelley Nelson singing. I prefer this to the original. Shelley Nelson doesn't just sing the song beautifully, but inhabits it. (I remember buying the Tin Tin Out album on the back of this track back in the day to find that the rest of the album didn't even approach the heights of 'Here's Where the Story Ends'.)

    Beautiful. Until the guitar comes in--then it begins to sound discordant with the piano. I'd probably drop it altogether or reimagine the steady piano accompaniment.

    • @TheClaudettesOfficial
      @TheClaudettesOfficial  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks for your detailed analysis, Commoner. To put a fine point on this, though, there's nothing harmonically "discordant" to what the guitar does. This was a very informal session, and there is, in fact, only one mic for all the instruments, and it's quite close to the guitar, as you can see (there's also one mic for vocals). It wasn't really a recording session, more of a video document (though we found the overall performances satisfying enough to put them out thusly: theclaudettes.bandcamp.com/album/pull-closer-to-me-live-in-the-piano-room). We play this interpretation in jazz clubs and other posh venues to great effect, using a different guitar, amp and tone. Here, though, it's an acoustic, and I gather that you are not a fan of that tone. I myself love how everything gels here, but everyone of course has his/her own opinion...for me, the thunder of the floor tom, the low-mid of the piano and the crisp highs of the guitar are a beautiful match. Again, harmonically, there's nothing close to dissonance going on, so I believe we're having an EQ/tone discussion.
      Cheerio...come see us live and we can further discuss, or we can try to just win you over!:

    Meh, the SUNDAYS used a 12 string guitar on this track, with a much more aggressive/animated strumming style. That really brightens it up. And your guitarist didn't seem to really know all the subtle chord/fingering changes (there are a lot of sus chords, major 7ths, etc). Also, the lyrics are sung much more evocatively, like Harriet Wheeler is smiling and crying at the same time. Not bad, but not great either.

    • @TheClaudettesOfficial
      @TheClaudettesOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This isn't a studio track, it's just us with two mics in my piano room, and yes, it's a different vocal approach. With no other version to compare it to, how do you like this?: th-cam.com/video/s7qZfX4NZ20/w-d-xo.html

      @@TheClaudettesOfficial . I agree with manamedia. The piano and vocal together sounded great. The guitar and drums distracted. On the original, you will note that the guitar was strumming a complicated rhythm which your piano player captured, IMHO. But the guitar did not capture this and the drums ... don't get me started. You can say "to each his own", but you need to be open to constructive criticism. Piano and guitar together often get in each other's way rhythmically and you need to work on playing the same pattern, at least on this song. And yes, please, start the video at the start of the song, most people don't want to hear the chitter chatter at the beginning.

    • @TheClaudettesOfficial
      @TheClaudettesOfficial  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesvwaal1701 Why don't you guys debate the sonics of our actual studio recordings? This is just us having fun in my piano room with one vocal mic and one room mic--and when we play this live, we use bass, not acoustic guitar, which was just used here because this was us playing acoustically. Here they are: yellowdogrecords.com/theclaudettes
      And here's our TH-cam playlist including actual music videos like "Don't Stay with Me": th-cam.com/play/PLuKbNgXi2gR_7f3f1vTu_pW6m8dE9OE0C.html
      What you guys are focusing on is just us playing some songs live in my house, and documenting it for fun. Not a produced session. The chit-chat at the beginning reflects the beyond-casual nature of these proceedings. It's not a music video, and we weren't here calculating what "most people want." The band formed as a piano-drums duo (theclaudettes.bandcamp.com/album/infernal-piano-plot-hatched), and the piano is at the center of most everything we do. In this case, it fills in for the whole Sundays band, in this "unplugged" arrrangement. So, what instrument would you have fill all the space of a full band? Did a piano fall on you once...why the piano hatred? Also: this series is called "Live in the Piano Room" (If you're a masochist, you can purchase the whole piano-heavy acoustic live performance right here: theclaudettes.bandcamp.com/album/pull-closer-to-me-live-in-the-piano-room ). Lastly, this is just us trying to have some unplugged fun in my piano room. Having an intense, negative reaction to it is surprising. It's not an album or concert film. Hope to see you on the road sometime, and good luck with your journey toward Piano Acceptance.

    • @TheClaudettesOfficial

      (also, complaints about the monotony of the piano part should be directed to the great band the Sundays; I was merely playing the exact chords of the song. If playing three chords across a whole song sounds boring and monotonous to you, you should bid farewell to blues, country and folk music, and a good deal of rock 'n' roll and music from across the world for that matter)

      @@gustavocortesmunizaga814 perhaps keeping words like "horrible, monotonous" and "unecessary" out of reviews is a good way to keep from offending sensitive musician-types. You should feel free to call 'em as you see 'em, but I happen to thing you're just so far off on this one, and the review reads as simply mean-spirited. This was our cover version using what we had (acoustic instruments allowed only) around the piano. I happen to think that our version is a definitive version, but this is not a professional recording. To judge the Claudettes' professional recordings, piano monotony and songs, here are our last two albums, which have brought us all around the world, despite the horribly loud piano:
